MONDAY LESSON SERIES: • Monday's Spanish Lesso...
Hi everyone, Paul here :)
Some people love grammar. They love the security of it when learning languages, it just works for them. It suits them to a tee.
Other people hate grammar. It does nothing but prevent them from learning. In fact, it often prevents them from even trying. It just gets in the way.
The title of this video is a good example... "verb antonyms" are just opposite meaning verbs! An example would be "to go up" versus "to go down". It's stupid simple really.
If you don't like grammar in language learning... I'm your guy :-) This weeks lesson will prove it to you.
Enjoy and see you next Monday,
Paul

Wow, a light just came on for me!!! I'm at an intermediate level of Spanish, but for some reason I have never quite grasped when to use apagar vs prender, and how to subir. They are words that for some reason just have refused to stick in my brain. Look what I just realized! Aprender - to learn Prender - to turn on Prender las luces - to turn on the lights I teach English to Spanish-speakers (in a bilingual format) and they always get confused when I say "A light just came on!" Now I know how to clarify it for them with "a prender/aprender"! So excited about that!

Your comments on "oscuro" vs "obscuro" are interesting - the Word Reference forums suggests both are fine and the Instituto Cervantes recommends "oscuro". From Las 500 dudas más frecuentes del español by the Instituto Cervantes: ¿Se puede decir oscuro o hay que decir obscuro? Aunque se puede escribir, y por tanto pronunciar, de ambas formas, se recomienda usar la forma simple, oscuro, tanto en la escritura como en la pronunciación.

It goes without saying that Paul's course is the absolute best. However, since interactive dialog is essential to really learn any language properly, I wonder if this course has something to offer where one can communicate with someone else to practice? That would be too fine!

It's not safe to interact with people these days! Lol...but when I was learning German online, I found other people in the comment section who were also learning and asked if they wanted to have conversations in German for practice. Most people didn't respond, but one lady from Poland did and we had conversations on messenger. It was cool because she spoke no English and I spoke no Polish but we could talk to each other in German. We became good friends. So I recommend taking that route

¡Hola Paul! Es la primera vez que oigo "prender" for "turn on". Sin embargo, a menudo escuché "encender la luz" o "encender la televisión". Pienso que: "Voy a prender la luz" se dice en latina América y "Voy a encender la luz" se dice en España, verdad? ¡Gracias con antelación de contestarme!

Paul, based on what you're teaching here, is it better to say "¿me puedes hacerlo?" or "¿puedes hacerlo para mi?"
@SpanishWithPaul
@SpanishWithPaul 6 жыл бұрын
O.K so "me puedes hacerlo" sounds very forced in Spanish, it's sounds wrong. You'd need to go with "¿puedes hacerlo para mi?". To use "me puedes" you need to be asking for something specific and state exactly what it is you want.
@legaleagle46
@legaleagle46 6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I think a better translation of "me puedes" in this context would be "Would you mind...?" "¿Me puedes prender la luz?" "Would you mind turning on the light for me?" Do you agree, Paul? :)
@max_pin
@max_pin 6 жыл бұрын
I could be wrong, but I think the problem with "me puedes hacerlo" is that you're splitting up the direct and indirect object pronouns. I think they have to be grouped together either before or after: ¿Me lo puedes hacer? (or) ¿Puedes hacérmelo? However, I think the meaning might shift to "can you do it TO me" rather than "FOR me," so "para mí" is probably the way to go. 👍
@legaleagle46

Hmm -- in 43 years, I've never seen or heard "prender" used for "to turn on." The verb I learned for turning on the lights is "encender." I just learned something new today. :) Incidentally, there are actually several different verbs for "to turn on" and "to turn off" depending on what it is you're turning on or off. You wouldn't use "encender" or "prender" to turn on the water or the gas, for example. The proper verb for that is "abrir" (literally, "to open"). "Voy a abrir la llave." "I'm going to turn on the water/the tap." And in that context, the way to say "to turn off" isn't "apagar" but "cerrar" (literally, "to close").

Hi, can anyone please clarify the difference with lo compro and comprarlo? this is just an example , but my question is for the placement of "lo". is it in the beginning or end of the verb? Also, can we always use "me" in the beginning instead of "para mi" later on in the sentence? Thanks
@Florita111
@Florita111 3 жыл бұрын
Lo compro means “I buy it”. Comprarlo means to buy it. In the second you are using the infinitive. So one could say, “Lo voy a comprar” or “Voy a comprarlo”. They are the same and mean “I’m going to buy it”. Just alternate placements of “lo”.

I used to wonder about this too. Its La radio. The whole word is radiofonica which ends in an A. So its feminine. Its like the word La Foto =the photo. However, the longer version is la fotografia = the photograph. In english, we usually say photo or radio. (The shorter version). There are some exceptions but sometimes, ive observed, that the article is still inherited when the word is shortened.
