Painting The E30's Engine Bay [COLOUR REVEAL] Kapci Basecoat & Clearcoat Paint | 038
In this video, I reveal my paint colour choice for the E30 Build and paint the engine bay in its final basecoat colour topped off with a glossy clear coat finish.
Red Scotchbrite Pads: ebay.us/txFdxe
Panel Wipe: ebay.us/Wd9iCP
ANI F160 Spray Gun 1.2mm Nozzle: www.spraygunsdirect.co.uk/pro...
150L Compressor: ebay.us/xxiVq8
Kapci Clearcoat: ebay.us/1WaL5V
Painting Mask: ebay.us/gsQzot
Poly Masking Sheets: ebay.us/e4Ms44
I finally decided on a paint colour for the BMW E30 build, I had a few BMW colours in mind, but I also received quite a lot of great paint colour suggestions in the comments.
I ended up with a nice short list of options to pick from which included greats such as BMW Salmon Silver, Piano Black, Original Titian Red, Imola Red, Oxford Green.
All of these had their strengths, especially the car's factory colour of Tizianrot AKA Titian Red. Going this direction would lead to a much easier life where I could avoid painting under the boot lid and even door jams.
My issue with respraying the car in its original factory colour, is that Titian Red just really doesn't light my fire. I have an Imola Red E43 M3 which you may have seen in other videos, and even when Titian Red is wet and shiny, it looks dull and flat compared to Imola, so having the opportunity to paint an E30 in any colour I like, I had to take it.
A fun suggestion was to paint it Imola Red, a matching pair would be cool!
I nearly selected BMW Oxford Green Metallic II which came a close second for me - would have been perfect for a British E30 Build too, but not enough to sway me.
I decided to go in on the Kapci products so I could be confident in their compatibility. This is the same brand as my Epoxy Primer, and I've had great results before with their paints.
I first used 3M red scotch pads to sand and scuff up the previous epoxy finish to around 800 grit smooth, ready to accept a basecoat. When you're spraying metallic paint, you want to ensure you don't have any sanding marks or you will find the metallic flake sits in the marks and it can give an uneven metallic finish which spoils the effect.
Once I'd done this and panel wiped everything down, it was time to mix the base coat and finally open the tin to reveal BMW Mora Metallic 359, also known as Morarot Met 359, or BMW Mora Purple. It looked great in the tin.
I cracked out my new ANI F160 paint gun. I decided to invest in a new spray gun knowing that I'm planning to spray an entire car with it. It made sense to pick up a gun that was good enough to do that at this stage so I can get familiar using it on something less important.
I mixed up my basecoat and thinners to spec and set about getting two good coats on plus a drop coat which is another good trick to get an even metallic flake in your paint. Simply spray a broad coat from twice the distance on the most important parts to stand all your metallic up nicely.
With basecoat, you're looking for it to appear as a velvet finish once it's flashed off.
I gave 30-40 minutes to allow the basecoat to dry, more than recommended but it was 10 degrees Celsius on this day rather than 20 degrees for 2K Kapci paint, so I allowed for extra drying time. This helps you avoid getting solvent pop in the next clearcoat stage.
I mixed up my clearcoat and proceeded to get a first mist coat on. This initial clear lacquer mist coat works like glue for subsequent coats. Once you have this on you can straight away start putting a wet coat on. Then give some time and follow up with a second wet coat to give the final glossy finish. At this stage it's very important that you don't build up a paint run, which is easy to do if you arent careful.
It's also easy to miss parts, so its a dance between putting enough on for it to be glass-like but not so much that it runs or sags. Very difficult when you're painting a complex shape such as an engine bay.
Once done I walked away from my DIY garage spray job and allowed it a week to gas off and harden. At this point I was very unsure about the BMW Mora Metallic paint colour as it didn't look quite like I was expecting, it looked much darker, less purple and more red. More like I'd expect Calypso Red to appear.
I took the front core support out into direct sunlight and was greeted by a flash of pinky-purple highlight which was a relief. I suspect the Mora Met paint choice will be polarising, but I love it!

Yeah, I was very relieved when I took that core support outside and it came to life! I thought I was going to have to start over for a minute. 🤣 Nice idea with the puller fans, I've seen others manage to make a positive pressure spraying tent with filtered stacked fans. I think I'd use the side door and make a fan rig for that to pull clean air in. I'm planning to spray some of the panels off the car, so if I'm having a hard time getting clean results that will be my next project...

You're seriously quick Lupul, I'm impressed! 😆 Yeah that's awesome advice about the floor, I should have wet it a lot more than I did. Luckily it's only an engine bay, it's a valuable lesson to learn for when I do the exterior though.

@@SPANNERRASH it’s a common thing to do on show cars, it’s called “flow coating” you shoot the first two coats of clear, then when dry you flat it with 800 grit and put another two coats of clear on. The finish is like glass when done properly. A flow coat has saved me a few times when getting a run or lots of dust, sometimes it’s easier to flow coat than spend all day flatting and polishing it
@SPANNERRASH

@@peakperformance8960 Aha I have heard that term before, I think I might actually intend to do that for the exterior paint job, it sounds like it could really be worth getting that extra clear on so I can polish is right up and remove any trash in the finish, some of which is likely unavoidable being a garage spray job. Lovely color choice. I can't wait to see the entire car in its final color. I'm just about to tear into my '87 e30 as well (shaved bay, turbo motor, and a full respray) and your build has been a great motivator and inspiration. I'm planning a Black Sapphire Metallic to match my M2C. You mentioned a steering rack swap towards the end. I did a Z3 1.9L rack in my car (2.7 turns full lock-to-full lock) and it's absolutely perfect. Ironically, my M2C has roughly the same ratio. Maybe that's one of the reasons I fell in love with the drive of it. If it's one of your choices, I HIGHLY recommend the Z3 rack. Doesn't wander on the freeway, but it'll get the front end to really turn-in when you need it on the backroads. You won't regret it.

Hi Eleanor, really glad the vid is useful for you. For the base coat (colour), leave around 10 mins between coats. Then leave at least 45 mins before moving onto the clearcoat to avoid solvent pop. With the clearcoat, do a light mist coat first, then give it just a few minutes to go tacky before moving onto a good wet coat. Leave around 10 mins and then apply a second wet coat. Then let it sit for the 14-16 hours to harden up. But do look at the data sheet from the paint manufacturer and take ambient temperature into account. They can vary a bit. 😁

@@SPANNERRASH well like you I don’t have an oven to bake the paint in but unlike you I don’t have a garage so all my is done in the garden and in the summer. And 50% overlap minimum sometimes 80% overlap, usually you don’t even need to thin the paint out. I went with ANI F160 spray gun, with a 1.2 tip. I linked it in the description if you want to check it out. It should be a game changer for when I paint the exterior of the car, a nice wide fan, and the paint comes out so fine compared to the super cheap Sealey guns I was using before. Obviously in paint gun terms, it's still a "cheap gun", but it seems to come very well reviewed by people who know a lot more than I do about painting. Namely @TheGunmanChannel 😃

@@SPANNERRASH I have the R150 it's a good gun. The Flg5 is a great gun also. Especially for a full panel/car spray

I'm a painter. If you want someone to paint it for exchange of some welding on my e30, I'm your man 😅

Haha if I never weld again it may be too soon! 😂 Although I'll definitely remember about this deal when I'm inevitably having a mare painting the exterior, so sit tight on that. 😆

@SPANNER RASH Ohh mate , I was totally serious 😂😂 if you want to lay down a few welds can lay down a paint job. We can then both pretend we really did the work ourselves 😂 sharing is caring in the e30 brotherhood. 🫡

@@sirstretchyboy69 I'm supposed to be doing it all myself and learning as I go, but this is very tempting... 😂 Have you considered getting stuck in with the welding yourself? Its much easier than painting imo! Well, it is if you're happy with "good enough" like I am...

@SPANNER RASH I can do it, no problem. The problem is I actually hate panel work with a passion 😂 il stick to body work and paint. I don't mind gun slinging and taking the glory at the end 🤩 I mean, who doesn't like transforming what looks like a grey primed car and transforming it to look like a sheet of glass. If you need any help or pointers, drop me a message. I'd be happy to help.

Here's a free painting tip for somone painting in a garage or without a paint booth. Wet the floor and walls I don't mean like a swimming pool but wet it down and any dust in the air will drop and stick, it won't then be blown back up onto the car 👍 been a while since I painted in a garage😂.
Who has won ?? 😀 #shortvideo #lizzyisaeva
