something i notice about the better guys is that they seem to both agree silently to stand within kicking range, where the boxing is more viable. at my level, we all kinda stand just outside of kicking range then try to snipe in and out a bit more like karate guys or boxers. i don't know how to close that distance with someone who wants to maintain it, while not eating kicks. i have the strong sense that if i try to open up with boxing rather than a kick, i will eat a kick on the way in, or i'll have to kind of blitz and eat counter punches. it's a bit more like jousting

In my novice opinion, I don’t see how it’d be possible to maintain a range that one fighter is actively avoiding It just seems more effective to use feints to disguise and get within your desired range rather than possibly telegraphing your entry/closing the distance I say this as a shorter guy who has ate plenty of kicks by deliberately attempting to close the distance lmao

Timing and having some bread and butter moves in your back pocket is a big part of it. Most guys that stand that close know that they can either slip, block, or absorb strikes from that range and also have enough defensive awareness to deal with anything that comes their way.

I am thinking to start Muay Thai. And I am wondering if in Muay Thai gyms there is some sparring etiquette or non verbal agreement to avoid sparring sessions become a brawl or get innecesary damage

Don"t worry, your normal muay thai gym is nothing llke this. When someone goes too hard in sparring and its not comfortable for you, just tell them to slow down! And if they dont you always have the choice to not spar with them.

If it’s a good gym with good people, you’ll be fine. A lot of the time (in my personal experience) the ones going hard are competitors.

What happens to these individuals that spar hard later in life? I love kickboxing but I've always been hesitant to go hard. I'd love to go hard, but the potential long term consequences worry me. I'd love to hear others perspectives that have actual experience with this. Again, what happens to people that train hard later in life?

U can't get better just flow sparring either. You don't have to spar hard all the time, if your just training to train. Sparring hard once a month or every 2 months is plenty. Sparring hard does help alot, especially on the defensive, faints and iq end. Even when sparring hard guys know who fights and who dosent, so they not gonna go over board, some will, but that's because their dicks. Do it just wear big gloves 16oz-18oz and head gear with nose guard in front, and don't be afraid to take a knee if u getting worked. Don't just take a knee cause u bitching up though.
