Sparring with the Bolognese Sidesword

Most of the marozzo.com videos show solo exercises. The main reason for this is that they are easier to make. But that does not mean we did not do pair practice and sparring, rather quite the opposite as all the solo work is directly designed to improve the fencer's performance in an antagonistic situation.
This video will give you an idea what Bolognese sidesword fencing looks like. Taken during a light sparring session after other regular practice, this video shows how much space is easily covered by the footwork of this style, how feints and provocations can be made with cuts, invitations and body positioning. Likewise you can see in action both gioco largo, the wide play, when the swords barely meet in search of the place to "wound" the opponent and gioco stretto, the narrow play, when we play with the points in line and with smaller actions and a closer measure.
In the end there's also a bit of sword and dagger, but who can spot what else we are practicing?

I love how they switched to daggers halfway through. Sideswords are so badass with their finesse and strength.

You have such powerful explosive actions. I love how well you vary your tempo when fighting. I'm a highly aggressive fighter and since I am young and in good shape, I tend to overwhelm my opponents with volume of attacks and feints mid exchange. Though I much prefer your more refined style of fighting. Man would I love to face you, and nice left and handed exchange!!!

ilkka, do you have suggestion on beginner's paired drill? my colleague and i do spar a lot, do paired forms too, and do basic solo cuts and passegiare. but since we four have previous basic in other martial arts, we pretty much could understand the tempo, misura, and footwork pretty naturally, and almost never bother on working those outside the forms and sparring. but then we got new members who have no prior martial arts training whatsoever, and we pretty much don't have clue on how to train those essential things, so i don't think it is safe for them to spar yet. do you have any suggestion? or i just let em spar?

Would it make more sense for this to be called "sparring IN THE Bolognese Side-sword"? Is the sword itself "Bolognese side-sword" or does it become Bolognese side-sword through the way it is used? Nice video either way.

I'd say the style would be "Bolognese tradition" or "Bolognese fencing" or something suchlike, the sword is simply a sword, even the term "sidesword" itself is an anachronism and likely based on hasty misreading of Marozzo. To be honest though, I just came up with the first title I could come up with 4am in the night, wanting to go to sleep. I didn't give it much thought. :)

No binding? Interesting since for most other swords binding is essential.
