This clip shows a Sparrowhawk predating a blackbird nest I was monitoring on my live cams. Interesting to see that the Sparrowhawk is ringed.

Nesting failure and juvenile mortality are high among most birds. In addition to predation of eggs and nestlings, as we see here, individual eggs are often nonviable, and a lot of nests themselves don’t survive, as they’re blown out of trees in storms, or the birds didn’t manage to make the nests structurally secure enough. Then, after fledging, probably a majority of juvenile birds fail to make it through their first year, to get the chance to breed even once. Predation continues to be a threat to juveniles, and many of them don’t learn to feed themselves adequately. Of course, we could infer all this from the numerous eggs and young we see in nests, especially of small birds (although also of some large ones, like ducks). If birds that have lifespans of several years have four, five, or six or more young in each brood (and, with some species, they nest two or three times each breeding season), that tells us that a very large number of young are needed to produce, in the end, the one individual that, ultimately, successfully breeds, and therefore constitutes the replacement offspring of one bird for each parent that’s required for a stable population. That, obviously, implies a tremendously high mortality rate among young birds.

Your blackbirds look just like our robins without the red breast. Gotta love the sparrow hawk though. I love watching our bird feeders. Can't help but like the sparrow hawk swooping through and keeping the rest of the birds on their toes. I like how the song birds just freeze and fall to the ground. Pretty decent getaway maneuver. The hawk seems to like them on the wing and 99% of the time ignores the birds that have fallen to the ground.

He's referring to the metal band around the hawk's leg, which indicates that wildlife researchers have previously caught the hawk and placed the band around its leg for research purposes. This video was shot in the U.K. Here in the U.S. we refer to that that piece of metal as a "band" rather than a "ring."

Even then, they have families to feed as well. It's not personal, they're just doing what they have to in order to survive like everything else. If this camera only showed the nest of the hawk and you just saw a mother hawk returning with these chicks to feed her babies, you wouldnt feel so bad.
