Spasmodic dysphonia, also known as laryngeal dystonia, is a disorder in which the muscles that generate a person's voice go into periods of spasm.[1][2] This results in breaks or interruptions in the voice, often every few sentences, which can make a person difficult to understand.[1] The person's voice may also sound strained or they may be nearly unable to speak.[2] Onset is often gradual and the condition is lifelong.[1]
The cause is unknown.[1] Risk factors may include family history.[1] Triggers may include an upper respiratory infection, injury to the larynx, overuse of the voice, and psychological stress.[1] The underlying mechanism is believed to typically involve the central nervous system, specifically the basal ganglia.[1] Diagnosis is typically made following examination by a team of healthcare providers.[1] It is a type of focal dystonia.[3]
While there is no cure, treatment may improve symptoms.[1] Most commonly this involves injecting botulinum toxin into the affected muscles of the larynx.[1] This generally results in improvement for a few months.[1] Other measures include voice therapy, counselling, and amplification devices.[1] If this is not effective, surgery may be considered; however, evidence to support surgery is limited.[1]
The disorder affects an estimated 2 per 100,000 people.[1] Women are more commonly affected.[1] Onset is typically between the ages of 30 and 50.[1] Severity is variable between people.[2] In some, work and social life are affected.[2] Life expectancy is, however, normal.[4]

Thanks everyone for their input. I wish more people understood what we experience I have mixed SD complicated by surgery. I appreciate that in times of stress my voice is affected as my job which involves hours of speaking a day. What I would like to see is a move away from saying "relax and you will be better", "it's all in your head". Each person has their own story.

I can relate to this... people hardly understand our situation... the first suggestion they give is seek a doctor for help... where I have almost tried every single specialist... that's all they could advise....not bothered about people now....just worried about the future and stressed about the challenges we face in day to day life...hope somehow our life gets on track again.❤️❤️

I totally identify with this. Sometimes people think I’m nervous or crying. I have had it for 10 years and I am so tired of it. I cannot work with the public anymore. Some people were kind and suggested remedies, others were not so kind. It’s tough.

That’s me! People think I’m either sick or feeling emotional because they think I’m about to cry, especially over the phone. I’m so grateful I can text people now instead of talk over the phone, but certain bank services still need me to verify details and I feel so stressed having to say my card details and numbers since they can’t get what I say.

@Pallavi after I learn from my doctor that my condition was neurological connected, I stay focus more on my mental health, I should say, I focused more on the possitive sides of my life, instead of worrying too much about my condition. I noticed that everytime I am happy and more relax, my voice sounds good, but when I think too much and worry about everything especially when it comes to my problem, my voice sounds so bad.. It maybe sounds weird, but it is true, I noticed that I have voice when I am happy, I can even sing, but can't talk properly. Voice rest can be a big help also, so minimize talking. This is just based on my personal experience..

Wow, I've been trying to figure this out for a few years now! finally onto something. It's really bothering sometimes... when you have to put major effort just for the voice to come out. people can misunderstand you a lot. it also takes the joy out of some activities. after all, communication is so important. right now my voice is ok but i don't want it to degrade further. On the bright side, while looking for answers I learned a lot about correcting & improving the talking/breathing technique

im 19 and i suffer from this, i got it when i was 15, and ive struggled with talking so much that ive become extremely silent, i used to talk a lot to people, but now i almost never speak out loud. My voice suddenly breaks and is fades when i say words that include the letters "a,e,i,o,u,m,h" so its hard for me to say "hello" because the h,e and o will dissapear and people just hear wierd creaky noises while the two "ll" are perfectly sounding... i am so embarressed, i cant read out loud in school, cant speak normally in everyday conversations with my friends or family sometimes, cant talk normally on the phone, and this has given me SO much anxiety, i feel like im mute sometimes. i dont know what to do with my voice, i used to love singing but i cannot sing anymore or talk, i hate it so much

@carl0telli -I know it's hard. I struggle too with "h", "m" and sometimes just saying my name which starts with "m". I learned to practice with a close family member who understands my struggles with everyday conversations. When I'm alone, I think of questions folks might ask me, i.e. "What's your name?" or "How can I help you?" I also call stores just to ask their store hours or if they carry a certain product for phone practice. This helps me a lot! I exhale for like 2 seconds before I speak and exhale softly after speaking 4 or 5 words for good breath support during conversation. Don't give up! You're so young. The worst thing you can do is to stop talking. That's when you will feel hopeless! Keep talking and feel happy when you speak! Whenever you feel nervous or anxious, take a deep breath, raise your pitch a little whereby your voice feels comfortable and you can hear your words as you speak. Lastly, Pray and ask Jesus Christ to help you. He certainly helps me everyday. I hope these tips help you. Your speech will get better just don't quit! God bless you!

I've had two surgeries on my vocal chords to remove a cyst like bump on them that was causing my voice to be rough. That solved that problem..Now fast forward 20 years later and I've noticed that when I'm working on a home project for more than a half hour by myself my voice is strained like and less strong once I start to to talk to someone after being silent for a while...This doesn't happen to me in the morning after sleeping all night.

My voice went a year after spinal cord surgery at c3 to relieve pressure on my spinal cord. It started by sounding like I had laryngitis. And got progressively worse over time. It's been close to 10 years now with this voice condition which is frustrating at best. People don't realize how much air it takes to talk. I can't just jump into conversations anymore because I don't know what kind of sounds are going to come out. I can't sing anymore not even just for fun. It's a strange disability that almost caused me my job as a call center rep. I got moved into a position that I'm not constantly talking. Bottom line it sucks...

@@adityakardile9029 I'm now 63 I've been dealing with this for 10 years now. I've gone thru various therapies and to be honest nothing helped with the spasms until I tried cannibis. It has relaxed my neck muscles and my vocals cords to the point of being able to eat without worry of a spasm choking me out. But to be able to spontaneously speak I can't. I have to breath and "find" my voice. But then again I never know what sounds will come out! I surprise my self with my goose honk I call it.

Unlock Method This only applies to EZ-IN difficulties. AT difficulty is unlocked by getting S grade or above on IN difficulty. 1. Clear 尊師 ~The Guru~ on the difficulty you are trying to unlock. 2. On the same difficulty, either •Full Combo NYA!!!, JunXion Between Life And Death(VIP Mix) or cryout •Clear Reimei or 尊師 ~The Guru~, getting 6 or fewer Bad/Miss judgements When doing either of the above methods, you can retry and switch songs as many times as you like. Doing this will trigger a cutscene that starts Spasmodic at the end. Getting a C grade or higher will unlock it on that difficulty (Phigros game)
