Obrigada! I'm still in the US, however, I want to be able to understand Portuguese and to be understood by Portuguese speakers once I move to the country. This is so helpful.

Coming from someone who has been trying to learn Portuguese for 3 years, don't get your hopes up on the "understand spoken Portuguese" part. It's REALLY difficult. Try to get a teacher and plan to spend at least a half hour a day learning. Doulingo and some of the other apps are nice but most of them teach you Brazilian Portuguese and there is definitely a difference between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese..

Nada...

Very nice tips. I never realized that the first "o" in "obrigado" is open in Portugal and closed in Brazil. It would be interesting to know if there are other similar examples.

Ha! I just realized that knowing Japanese is what makes the tapped R in Portuguese super natural for me. Arigatō!

@@TalktheStreetsYeah, the Japanese R is kind of a blend of R/D/L.

Love this video. Very good advice and even though I like to think I'm pretty good but sometimes even after a couple of words of Portuguese I find someone replies back to me in English and this results in me going all "confused pikachu".| The various sounds of r, c,s,x and the nasal vowels are all worth focusing on and maybe even a piece on the letters not used in Portuguese from the English alphabet and why. K and Z for example

Is "r" at the beginning of the word supposed to also be the tapped r or more like an American h? My address begins with "Rua" and I know its not the American "r"...
@TalktheStreets
@TalktheStreets 6 ай бұрын
In "rua" it's the same sound as the double R, as we'd say in "carro" :)

Why this video? US Citizens in general won't spend real efforts to speak português! Eu vivo em Portugal desde Outobro 2021. What about EU-Citizens (incl. ENG 😀). Netherlands, Sweden, Bulgaria France, Spain ...
