How do you know if an English speaker is listening to you? Really listening?
Your ideas, stories, and opinions are important. In this lesson, you’ll know the signals English speakers use to show they are listening.
The lesson is longer than usual but necessary because you’ll learn:
- Why listening is a powerful, generous gift
- How active listening can benefit you
- How to know when English speakers are listening
- What signals you can use to show you’re listening to others
- What to say when someone isn’t listening to you (but they should be)
At Speak Confident English, we are ALL about helping you speak AND communicate with confidence.
Fun, easy, and clear communication means strong listening skills are a must.

In the Hmong culture, older people don't look at you in the face when they are talking to you. Instead, they would turn their face the other way. Also, women never shake hand with men or smile at any men. I love all your videos. Thanks for sharing.

Good afternoon Annemarie! What an honor to participate here on the channel. When I realize that I am not being heard, I do exactly as you said: I stop talking and the person then refocuses his attention. I have learned a lot here on the channel and as I said, it is a great honor to watch your videos. May God richly bless you !!!

Thank you so much Annemarie, one precious lesson more. Over the years I have built a mixed way to express myself into Spanish, Portuguese and lately Franch, so I don't know exactly how I hear people and which are the verbal clues I use. To listening others I make eye contact not fixed of course and I also use to look at the hands the person who talk to me. You, for exemple use your hands as an important tool to comunicate yourself, its work perfectly, I think if I'd wacht a video of you where you speak without your hands I wouldn't undestand anything. You also have very beautiful hands. Keep doind it please. And Thank you again for everything you're doing for me. You're a great coach!!!

This is very interesting! , Spanish is my tongue language, and we have “the good listener’s rules” , which is basically a list of steps that you must follow to have a conversation, we learn this rules at school and home , one of the rules is “listen in silence to the one speaking”

Thank you, Annemarie for your lesson, especially for the tips what to do when someone isn't listening to you during conversation. I'm rather good at active listening, so good that I have little opportunity to speak by myself! So when I have a chance to speak (very rare) I continue too long and eventually lose someone's attention. Here in Poland we use very similar verbal cues and sounds as English speakers do but we aren't so noisy, I think.

Very interesting video, thanks! I am working with an Italian student (C2 level) and this topic has come up in her lessons. I think the cultural differences are very important here; in Italian, apparently they do not use so many verbal supporting sounds as we do in English. In fact, my student told me that she finds it disconcerting when I say 'mmm' as I am listening to her! Will definitely be showing her this video!
