In this episode I jump around a lot between the left and right side door panels in an effort to make them sound awesome! 6.5 inch speakers fit well in our Volvo 240 wagons, as the holes are already there. The cold air intake helped daily driving as well!

I tuned in because I just bought an '82 245 GL with a similar air intake replacement. I went out this morning to scrape the ice and snow off my car and noticed a section of the ribbed air hose on the ground under my front bumper. Opened the hood and saw the filter laying on the ground under where it had previously sat. The 240 enthusiast group on Facebook informed me that it didn't look like the filter had been mounted properly (or at all), so now I'm looking for a way to jury rig it until I can get a suitable replacement (OEM or actually fix/replace the one I have with a similar system). So even that brief little bit that you showed about your solution is helpful to me, especially since I'm still learning about these cars. So thanks for all of this!

In cold climates that heated air is to prevent icing of the throttle body. Driving in winter, the vacuum temperature sensor opens to the heated air if the air in the filter box gets too cold. The concern is that if it sticks in the heated air position, it can cause the fine wire in the MAP to break.

The preheater also comes in handy when you live where it gets to -20F regularly in the winter. After I fixed the preheat (someone propped the flapper shut) on my 245, my car warmed up enough to produce heat from stone cold in ~2 minutes of driving.

I need some good suggestions for removing the rivets. I’ve got a 1990 240 and have had trouble getting any of them off.

Great to know that 6.5's will fit. I read somewhere that the speakers are 4", but that must have just been the rears. This may not be the place to ask, but I'm wondering if there is a subharness for the rear speakers (and/or front speakers) somewhere before the wires go up into the dash? I have no signal (or connectivity measured with a meter) in both wires coming from my rear left speaker.

yeah! they fit 6.5 to 5.5 openings, taking the extra inch up with the lip. the older 240 series cars (pre 1990?) had smaller speakers all around. 1993 was also the only year with a mini tweeter in the rear doors, higher up from the speakers, wired in parallel iirc.

David Bello I also upgraded the speakers of my 1978 Volvo 244DL (sedan) and yes, its OEM speakers were smaller than your '93 240. These ones are also about 6" and fit perfectly well. The door armrests are also slightly different 'cause they were the early style ones ('75 - '79 model years). I also installed aftermarket 2-way speakers in the rear parcel shelf and tweeters on the black triangular mirror cover above the door panel. And of course, an aftermarket radio!

volvo 240 are remarquable as they are if you plan to use them as daily drivers especially if you use in a cold climate I owned 3 of them in Québec and after more than 35 years of continuous use, I make the constatation that no cars are more adapted to northern roads conditions not even the newer volvos

I always preferred my 940, a lot of it has to do with the factory limited slip diff and the more sophisticated suspension, (lighter feeling) especially in curves. I also live in Québec, I had to put a locker in my 240 because I was unsatisfied about it's winter performances after owning a 940, I also had to put a thicker front sway bar.

the 240, 740 and 940 shares the same ADN the later 240 had a LSD that is equipped with a centrifugial device that cancels the LSD above 20 MPH if I remember well probably to avoid control loss on slippery roads. The phylosophy of Swedish designed Volvos was to improve the breed with every new concept all staying simple and sound design. Since the acquisition by Ford, this is spoiled and newer volvos are nothing more than a computer on wheels, the quality all components have drastically dropped, they are nothing more than gadget filled anything you can find elsewhere.

My '92 240 had an open diff, I think the locker came with a towing package, I'm not sure of the ratio but I'm thinking of putting my '93 940 rear end on my 240, automatic 940s had a gear ratio of 4.10:1 and my 240 is either a 3.73 or 3.91. There is also 2 kind of lockers, the truetrac or the powr-lock, I'm not sure wich is wich but I'm sure my 940s rear end didn't unlock above 20mhp and that it's a clutch type LSD.I agree with the computer thing, they have lots of problems with them, including what I've seen as a mechanics, weird no start problem (everything seemed to be fine, the engine was turning but the starter drank too much juice and disabled the relay for the ecu (but not the starter relay?)) throttle body failures, fuel pump cpu failure, rear diff cpu failure (awd models). I'm still talking about cpus here there are plenty of other expansive stuff going wrong with these cars. The seats are amazing though.

By the way it would have been an excellent opportunity to clean the armrest, since that collects dirt ,grime and if the door panel looked disgusting the armrest looks worse once they are clean, they look awesome, also I was wondering why you never put speakers in the back doors, especially in a station wagon, some people have had Volvo speakers in the back doors, since you have extra space that could benefit from speakers for extra clarity, a crisper sound.
