I was shocked when he put the LS50's in the lowest tier because it had no bass for the price. LOL! And he is right. They do have no bass. But what you do get for that price, is one of the most awesome sounding and Beautiful speakers out there. I have a 5.2 system in my room (all older LS50s with two 8 inch subs) and it is heaven! Everybody who have listened to my system give me the wow factor, and tell me that it's like listening to headphones. Bottom line is that all of these bookshelf speakers need a subwoofer to really get that 20 Hz range… Probably even the $3500 heresy. And if that's the case, you'll be blown away by the LS50s. But I get what he's doing. I guess he should have not included the heresy because I don't think it belongs there. I shall say no more. :-)

Randy - this had to be done! Thank you. If you were so moved, maybe a sound quality rating as a suffix? Maybe 1.0 to 11 ? These go to eleven ... Value is balancing so much - what you like, and what you can afford - and that is excellent to know how you judge these. By adding a audio quality only, might let folks get better sound, and they can decide whether the price is worthwhile for them.

I think the Evo 4.2 needs a higher position. Compared to the others it is a heavy 3-way speaker which cost less than the small ls50 metas. The evo 4.2 is often described as reasonably priced high end. The positioning requirements aren't all that of a problem. Just try to reduce reverb in a room which can be achieved by simple things like rugs, curtains and furniture. They have no ports at the back so sound isolation at the backwall isn't really necessary within normal living room listening volumes. So for what's been given it is bang for buck
@redrock425

The 4.2 are great speakers. The better the input the better they get. Heard mine fed by a 1200AS2 powered amp and they were fantastic.

I like speakers with not that much cabinet area behind the drivers, or below the drivers. Not only does cabinet diffraction smear the sound but your ear/brain system has to figure out the placement of the instruments more, instead of them being sharply focused and instantly obvious exactly where they are coming from. Cabinet area behind the drivers can cause brain confusing cabinet diffraction. There are some strangely shaped speakers like the vintage Spica Angelus and Snell Type A, which purposely had wide cabinet baffles, but the baffles were sloped or rounded, not a shape that standing waves like to hang out. Sound degrading standing waves like straight up and down flat surfaces with a wide width, parallel surfaces, and corners. They really love corners. Which is the reason most peoples rooms don't sound right. Small bookshelf speakers do not have much cabinet area for diffraction to develop. There is a reason to get bookshelf speakers. With a subwoofer the bookshelf speakers can be brought out further from the wall and the subwoofer can be kept back closer to the wall to reinforce the bass with full bass dynamics. Speakers like the vintage Dahlqiist dq10, 20 & 30, Vandersteen model 1 & 2 in all their incarnations etc. have no cabinet behind the midrange and tweeter. They all are famous for their decidedly un-boxy sound, with no sound smearing, from wood behind the drivers. Drivers with incredibly good dispersion can get away with cabinet surface area behind them better than most ordinary designs. There are also some advanced horn designs which have wide cabinets but they are shaped different and are calculated to launch the sound, instead of the common shaped cabinet which standing waves and early reflections like.

Damn you for only ranking my recently purchased (based greatly in part to your review) Elac DBR62 as B tier! You said they were great and could probably be "end game speakers for a lot of people", surely that deserves S tier! Haha I'm just shittin' you. As a value proposition you're probably right on the money with that grade. They are quite nice, but I reckon I could have been just as happy with a lesser speaker at a better price/value. Though maybe these will hopefully save me the cost and headache someday of feeling like I need to upgrade. So in closing, thanks for the awesome video. And I'll echo others in that I hope you'll consider doing a video comparing/tier listing a large swathe of speakers based solely on performance. Bought my LS50 (original) for $749. Placement is absolutely critical. I have them 3 feet from the walls and I sit about 8 feet from them. Bass is surprisingly good, but they do need a sub. In my case, the bass extends far deeper than 90 hz before rolling off. Not gut thumping, for sure, but there is some weight. The imaging and transparency is pretty amazing. That’s the magic of these speakers.

I bought a pair of the Sonys. Thank you Randman, the Randmeister, Randola, Randalamadingdong. They are SHOCKINGLY good at an unbelievably cheap price. I use them with the Dayton 12” sub on a Dayton HTA100BT tube amp rolled with NOS RCA and Telefunken tubes. AS CONFIGURED, they stomp the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2’s even with the better bass response from the ELACs. Speaking of the B6.2s, having to give Danny $380 to fix them is not a great value to me. I am trying to decide if I’m going to sell them, fix them, or just live with them. They are very neutral and nice for the price.

Recommend bookshelf speakers under $500 that deliver: - Balanced sound with crystal clarity and warm signature. - Unfatiguing sound signature for extended listening - Layered, lively, and nuanced vocals with depth and dimensionality - Taut and nuanced bass response with subtle textural details and low-frequency extension - Immersive sonic landscape - forgiving to not so well recorded songs. It’s pretty well documented that the RPM-600m has a sizable dip in the upper mid-range, around 2000 Hz. It’s not forward, cutting it with an equalizer in that region will make the speaker even less neutral.

Ls50s become better value the more expensive of an amp you run. My original ls50s on my Hegel h390 competed easily with speakers up to 10k in the highs and mids. I have owned many speakers near the 10k price range and still regard those as one of my favorite speakers of all time. They are misunderstood because they simply will not work with lower end amplifiers.
@zeke937
@zeke937 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Their low efficiency coupled along with the fact that many mistakenly pair them with lower end class D amplifiers (which can give a speaker a thin/harsher sound) makes them really easy to be misunderstood. I have them paired to my Rotel RA-1572 (Class AB with 120 watts of power) and I love the combo. Added a Chord Hugo 2 into the chain as a dac and have been loving it even more. I also take issue with the whole "no bass" part. Two ways that tend to do bass quite well tend to do that at a cost of detail in the midrange/treble (what a speaker should do well). I rather have the detail then have a sub (whose job is do handle the bass frequencies anyways) fill out the bass region. No offence to the reviewer, but the fact that the LS50's are in the "F tier" really has me seriously questioning what amplifier he was using with them to begin with. Ron from "New Record Day" has a more reliable analysis of this speaker, and in his setup he has gear that can really show what the LS50's are capable of.

However I am looking for the fun factor now, may buy Jamo C93ii or Klipsch Rp500m. I need the added treble, not so young anymore. But will keep my Elac B6.2's they are most accurate and do benefit from better electronics.

Thanks for the breakdown! I'm piecing together a small stereo setup after years of apartment living. I picked up an old NOS Yamaha RX-V793 receiver from the late 90's off c-list. I don't care about surround sound, but it was $60 and has preouts for all channels plus sub, and a 90hz high pass. I was also able to score a Sunfire HRS-12 powered sub for $175 which is a bit overkill for my 15x15 room, but couldn't pass it up. I was using a pair of old 80's Canton Plus S 4ohm bookies as my mains, but these went to work with me to be powered by a Nobsound mini bluetooth amp. I'm running some old Boston A60's as mains now, but I'm borrowing them from my garage stereo. I'm looking for something under $300 new or used that does well with metal/alt/punk/ska/80's synth etc. , but isn't overly bright. Low end extension isn't crucial as I have a 1000w rms sealed 12" sub to augment that. The receiver supposedly has 75 rms a channel, but I'm not overly worried about efficiency as it has preouts so that could just give me an excuse to buy a separate amp down the line. The dimensions I have to work with are 13"D x 15" W x 24" H, and that would give me 1" from the wall. The Cantons are sealed 4" 2 ways so they aren't picky about placement. Neither are the A60's as they are also sealed, but with an 8" woofer. I have a feeling I should try to find front ported bookies given my placement limitations? This is a near field setup with each speaker being about 4 feet from me, and separated by about 6 feet left to right. I've been leaning towards some Emotivas as I've always wanted to try some ribbon tweets. I've had aluminum(paradigms) titanium (MB Quart/JBL) cone (Cambridge model 6/KLH/Jensen/Toshiba/Pioneer/Fisher/Technics/etc.) and plenty of silk soft domes, which have always been my favorite(cambridge newtons,bostons,cantons,wharfedales,brauns,minimus 7s,polks,etc.)

They're like most Klipsch bookshelfs (excluding the RP500M, which is their best by far) with really sucked out midrange and super bright highs. Andrew Robinson is a B&W lover, and he just did a scathing review of the 606. He hated them with a passion, and he likes bright speakers too. B&W is going downhill fast. Their quality goes down as fast as their prices go up

Realistic really never got the respect they should I had one of their ghetto blasters with these red meters it would go left and right right above the tape deck and it was like the best sounding boombox you could get I mean I actually had soundstage bass and everything with everybody else’s big boom box when we go somewhere to show them off they was just loud with no sound quality . It's all about personal taste, and price. One man's idea of beauty is an oak or birch tree, another's is a Christmas tree. My idea of a Christmas tree-speaker is that it's amusing, mostly for kids -- for about five days. A birch or an oak tree-type speaker will remain in good taste for decades and endure generations of kitchen remodelings. As such, it's worth considerably more in price. YMMV

Yeah, sadly I agree about the LS50's value. They do need a subwoofer...but the thing that gets me is their sensitivity. For such a small speaker they need a surprising amount of power. I do think they're good speakers (especially the cabinet build). IIRC I got my older LS50s for $900 on sale, before the wireless/metas came out so I didn't think it was tooo expensive. They're just not anywhere near what some folks would consider a "value" level of pricing.
