While the Dynaudio Special 40 speakers maybe Dynaudio's bread and butter, they certainly aren't holding back with their new Evoke series. Beautifully designed and built, the Dynaudio Evoke 20 have that unique Dynaudio sound. Sounding consistent across amplifiers, this may be an easier speaker to match with your existing components. As usual Andrew and Kristi, great review! I own the Evoke 10s, and everything that you said about the 20s is also true of the 10s, with the exception that the 10s bass is faster and more dynamically nimble. Granted, you do not get the same weight, extension, and SPLs as the 20s, but I use a REL subwoofer to fill in the bottom couple of octaves. I think those that are looking for the type of sound signature that you described, but within a smaller room environment, would probably be better served with the 10s over the 20s, as they have a slightly tighter and faster bass response. I think they sound incredibly natural with acoustic instruments, and therefore are great with jazz music as well.

I like how you reviewed this speaker, I have an Evoke 20 and love it very much..this sounds great with 3 meters distance even my son can tell the difference when I put it in that position. The NAD C388 is also great with these speakers, I have the CXA81 for now and am missing the smoothness sounds of the C388 for the Evoke 20. It sounds wide and detailed and I don't think I would need a sub for these speakers. Keep it up, thanks for the great review.

G'day Andrew and Kristi. Wanted to share my personal experience. I am also running the Dynaudio Evoke series (Evoke 50), and have both the Cambridge CXA80 and Yamaha AS1200 amplifiers. I was unhappy with the sound of the Dynaudios on the Cambridge as it seemed under-powered and the upper registers sounded harsh when playing at close to reference levels. So much so, I went out to buy a new amplifier. After auditioning 10 different amplifiers, I selected the Yamaha AS1200. The sound is sweet with crystal clear highs without being fatiguing, analogue sounding mids, and ample beefy bass. I realise that you were referencing the Yamaha 801 as lacking in bass, whereas I am talking about the Yamaha AS1200. Andrew, I fully agree with your suggestion that the Yamaha AS1200/2200/3200 would sound better. My experience with this Dynaudio pairing with the Yamaha AS1200 was that it was sublime pairing. I found that there is a significant sound quality difference in amplifiers in the entry level end of the Yamaha range (models with 3 digit names like 501 and 801) as compared to their mid to upper range (models with 4 digit names like 1200, 2200, 3200). So even though the Cambridge CXA80/81 amps are rated at 80W/channel vs the Yamaha AS1200 rated at 90W/channel, the extra 10W of power is not what makes the major difference in the sound quality. There is more to it than pure power output. Anyway, enjoying the Dynaudio Evokes - I agree whole heartedly with your review, these are fantastically good speakers for their price.

Dynaudio tweeters are the gold standard, the sound is a function of the crossover. Most other drivers from other companies pale in comparison. However, I get the "dark and moody" and "lacking fast attack" your partner nailed it. I had Dynaudio's in my system at one point and their power response seemingly required them to be pushed hard to get the spectral balance correct. Typical mass market home theater receivers probably will not drive them effeciently. IMHO. I like the back and forth between you two, she provides valuable interesting insight.

You pretty much nailed this one. I spent a lot of time with the Special 40s and the Evoke 20s and ultimately kept the 20s. My wife enjoyed the 40s more because of the crisper sound but I listen to music all day in my office, so the 20s were perfect and didn’t wear my ears out. Paired with a neutral and/or brighter sounding DAC and amp they are just so smooth, detailed and expansive sounding.

I'm glad the KLH Model 5 came up because that was my first thought when I heard Chris's initial comments and saw the price. If I'm able to add a pair of speakers in the near future for two channel listening I am definitely seeking out those KLHs. As for what is my favorite bookshelf speaker right now, I can't comment because I have old Definitive Technology towers as my main speakers for two channel and surround and have been in love with them since the day I bought them. I listen to the Evoke 20 every day, and I get quite a different experience when using different amplifiers. Through the Hegel H120, the sound is mellow and dark, while through the Burson Timekeeper 3i the Evokes open up quite a lot, with the music getting more airy and the treble getting considerably more sparkly. That's different than your experience with the amplifiers you've tried, getting pretty much the same type of sound across the board. The Evoke 20 have a very nice tone, very similar to Sonus Faber Sonetto 2, but much more balanced across the frequencies then the mid forward Sonetto.

I've had a pair of Evoke 20's for about six weeks now and I love them! They're so smooth that I can just keep pushing the volume without ANY hardness or fatigue showing up. Right now I have them running with a Parasound Newclassic 200 pre, NAD C275 amp, and dual SVS SB3000's(still toying a bit with other electronics though) . I've brought quite a few speakers home in the last few years and the Evoke's have been a real eye opener in identifying the "sound signature" that I prefer most. Even with demoing speakers at a couple of dealers I've been able to drive to, the Evoke's really hit the spot most for me! I have heard a few demos that really impressed me, but not at the price point of the Evoke's. As far as other 2 way monitors (priced in my budget) that I'd really like to hear, the Buchardt S400 MKII are of interest to me. But that'll have to be a bit later on. Thanks for the review Andrew! When I was wanting info on the 20's there wasn't too much out there, but they seem to be having a spike in popularity recently!

I'm in the process of building my first system and these are at the top of my audition list! I listen to a lot of obscure metal/rock music that is poorly recorded and have a hunch this would be a good speaker for them. Problem is finding the right amp pairing. The Naim Uniti Atom would be perfect for me if it had more power. These speakers are too hungry for 40 watts.
@JosephTongret
@JosephTongret 2 жыл бұрын
@@unklecorky2181 my guess would be that the Naim wouldn't be enough power, but I haven't heard it. The Evoke's are VERY good for music that has some rough edges, and just a great all-rounder for someone who listens to many genres with varying quality. My advice is go for something that sounds "neutral". For example, I found that the warmish smooth sounding Peachtree Nova 150 was an awful pairing despite reading a review that highly recommended it. That amp can sound wonderful with speakers that are a little bright in nature (ex: klipsch, focal). The E20's have a warmth in the midrange and slightly rolled off in the very high frequencies and they also take some current to really get dynamics out of them. For the price of the Naim, there's plenty of options that'll bring them to life. Just look for higher powered models that aren't described as "warm or smooth". You're going to want to bring out their dynamics in order to be impressed with them.
@JosephTongret
@JosephTongret 2 жыл бұрын
@@unklecorky2181 I'm NOT an "expert" audiophile, so take my advice with a grain of salt. But, I'd probably look at Musical Fidelity. Maybe the M5si? It's cheaper than the Naim and you may want a streamer, but it should have the power to bring the most out of the Evoke's.
@unklecorky2181
@unklecorky2181 2 жыл бұрын
@@JosephTongret Yeah, unfortuantly, you are probably right. Even if the Naim is undervalued at 40watts it’s probably still not capable of handling the Evokes. I’ve already been avoiding amps that are described as warm, laidback, smooth, etc., so I guess I’m on the right track lol. I already eliminated Cambridge audio stuff, but thanks for pointing out Peachtree as being in that camp too. I’ve been avoiding descriptives like transparent and analytical too. The Hegel amps usually get thrown in this camp. Amps described as lively, dynamic, and slightly colored like the Naim would be a good pairing with the Evoke’s imo. Musical Fidelity M6si is on my research list, along with the Parasound Halo Hint 6. I do stream a lot, so having a good quality dac/streamer is essential, but I can always add my own. I thought maybe Rotel, but I’ve read they aren’t very forgiving or colored; however, they can be neutral. I’m considering now I should save for a few more months and spring for the Uniti Nova, but the price of that puts me in Macintosh 352 hybrid territory!

Placement is without a doubt Dynaudio’s achilles heel. Not many have the space (nor the patient enough partner) to dedicate half the livingroom to speaker placement. I adore Dynaudio, but I don’t want to shoehorn them into a livingroom placement that greatly reduces the sound. They are a good example of speakers that demand a lot, but also give a lot in return to those who are willing to work with them.

Best bookies under $2,000 USD and under? It's hard to beat the Revel Concerto2 M16 stand mount speakers. At $900/pair new ($800/pair outlet pricing on Crutchfield), I chose them over the KEF R3 ($2,000/pair), Sonus Faber Sonetto 1 ($1,800/pair) and Vandersteen VLR-Wood ($1,600/pair). I wanted to listen to the Dynaudio Evoke 20, and Evoke 10 - which, if you wanted tighter/faster bass, I believe the Evoke 10 will bring that home beautifully with it's smaller 5-1/2" driver, then round it out with a sub. I also wanted to listen listen to the Revel M105 and M106 in home, but once I got the Revel M16 in home, I just couldn't let them go. They're just so good, and punch way above their price point.

Curious, how do 10-15 year old speakers hold up? For instance, I own B&W 703s which retailed for $3,500 back in the day. Adjusted for inflation they would retail for $4,500. Is the difference between, say the 702S2 and the old 703s significant enough to upgrade? The comparison doesn't have to be between B&W. It could be between speakers that offer similar models and which receive upgrades.

Hey Andrew, I was wondering if you wouldn't mind putting out a video on how to properly integrate a couple of subs for us two channel folks? I find plenty of information on the web about home theatre integration using the av receiver or an external dsp such as the mini dsp hd. But I'm primarily a stereo person in my day to day listening and the information on proper integration there is scant. Per one of your older reviews some 10 years ago, I recently purchased some Tekton M- lores with a matching pair of RSL speedwoofers. For a mere $1,500 outlay, I'm hoping I will have a good portion of clean and dynamic, full range sound. As I've watched many of your other excellent reviews, especially with speakers, I've always thought that many will require the use of a single or pair of subwoofers to really satisfy in the long run. So that leads me to ask about how to achieve amazing full range sound on the cheap. We are living in unprecedented times of having many high quality speakers and subwoofers for not a lot of money to choose from. Frankly, I no longer see the need to spend many thousands on speakers unless it has a distinct sound signature that truly tugs at your heart. Incidentally, my respect for you as a reviewer has increased even more since I read one of your negative/ honest reviews as of late. Thank you for keeping perspective and bringing some degree of integrity to this industry we all love.

I love your reviews (even when I sometimes disagree) I have a suggestion. When you discuss placement tell us EXACTLY how far you pulled the speakers out from the wall. I would like more "numbers" in this part of the review. When you say "you may have to pull them out a bit more from the front wall" that leaves me asking how many inches did you pull them out into your room? Yes, all rooms are different, but most of us are buying products unheard over the internet so your experience becomes our "virtual experience". Make sense? Thank you for your good work.

Same feeling here. KEFs are crisper and bring out acoustic music better; while sounding thinner and screechy for hard rock, pop rock. Dynaudios are warmer, and present hard rock, and pop rock fuller. As a Dynaudio Emit 10 owner, I wished I could switch to KEF LS50s while listening to certain type of music. I wished I could have them both. Maybe B&W could sit in the middle.

Christie preference for LS Metas are completely supported by sales figures and comments on forums. In the smaller size stand mount speaker category the KEF LS 50 meta, with a pair of micro svs 3000, are THE audiophile choice in the $2-5k range. You have to go to quality Floorstanding speaker over $5k to match or improve. Yes for those who prefer a smoother laid back presentation Dynaudio is a better choice. However, the Metas outsell any Dynaudio speaker at least 3 to 1. Thanks guys.

@@seano218 It's all good. Nobody got hurt! @David Rivera - you're fine. As for SVS, we love their subwoofers and use the Micro 3000 all the time. I would never call it sloppy. Never heard the KEF so I can't say if one is better but it is twice the price of the Micro so I'd hope it is appreciably better if it is. As for REL, we sent one of their subwoofers back without a review b/c their contact was rude AF to me for no reason and we don't promote bad behavior.

Beautiful, understated, unobtrusive as is the Dynaudio way. Combining them with a subwoofer and using a high pass filter would perhaps make them sound a bit snappier and allow you to place them closer to the front wall. I know you review products based on their own merits, but I'm suprised you didn't try them with the SVS just to see if it couldn't be remedied.

Nice review Andrew and kristi ! I own the Evoke 20's, I am using them for monitors in my studio ! I have them paired with an ELAC Alchemy DPA2. How many hours were on your review samples? Because they take a good 200 hours to break in properly. Initially, I almost sent mine back as I thought they sounded a bit dark and clouded. After 200 hours, they opened up beautifully . I like them for their organic neutrality, balance and non fatiguing demeanor, and my mixes translate very well. As for other speakers in this price range...B&W 706s2, KEF R3, Amphion Argon 3s.

Have you heard the Dynaudio Emit M20 bookshelf’s? I have had mine for over a year now, and I love them. Just like the the Evoke’s, they are very bass heavy, though the low end response on paper only goes down to 50hz. I think that’s an understatement, because they do sound like they go down deep, for a bookshelf speaker, warm mids, very laid back high’s and non fatiguing and they image extremely well. Dynaudio have a new Emit line out now, would be cool if you could check them out.
@RennieAsh
@RennieAsh 2 жыл бұрын
A speaker can sound bass heavy above 50Hz too. If you have peaks happening it can add up to 10dB. I have to EQ out a huge resonance at 46Hz . There's also a dip just above that, so I get "too much bass" and also "not enough bass".

I just bought the Evoke 20's, and yeah - they're phenomenal, albeit not cheap. Yes, you get what you paid for. I'd describe these speakers as effortless, dynamic and extremely well balanced. Treble's a bit lively - not overdone, or bright - but it may not pair well with some system components. This is not a rolled-off softdome tweeter. Word to the wise - when I went to audition these at my local Dynaudio dealer, I also auditioned the new Emit 20's. Try as I might, I couldn't really hear much of a difference between the Emit and the Evoke 20's, and had I not preordered the Evoke's I might have just bought the Emit 20's instead, which sell for half the price of the Evoke 20. Dynaudio really scored with the new Emit/Evoke lines, highest praise.
