Hi all, and welcome BACK to my channel!
Recently I went to California for a little birthday celebration and had a few hours to kill in San Francisco. I decided to take advantage of the opportunity and show you San Francisco's Chinatown! I hope you guys enjoy!

I LOVE when you interact with Chinese people, they're so stricken when you speak Chinese to them and that ability lights up their faces with appreciation. AND, I love how good you are to your mother, it makes me cry.....such a lovely daughter, your mom is blessed.

The spanish accent on that Chinese person is incredible, If I didn't know his background, Id assume he is mexican or something. -Native here.

Very common. People from all over the world live in California and they all seem to pick up Spanish very easily.

Most of the older gerneration Chinese in San Francisco Chinatown speak either ToiShan ( a city in Guandong)(台山话) or Cantonese.

True taishan was my first language. I did not speak English until I was 7 years old. As such I eventually became an English speech and debate coach

Love how you pointed out the architecture as there is so much history in the buildings. If you look upwards, you can see the carvings and statues on some of the roofs.

You are such a joy to watch and listen to. Your language skills are always showcased by your charm and personality. I have been watching you for quite awhile and am always inspired. I have heard negative comments about interactions with native speakers and disagree 100%. It is both entertaining and interesting for this listener who has always aspired to speak other languages. Amazing ! Thanks for sharing... Trip down memory lane as I used to live in the Bay Area and visit SF Chinatown back in the early 80's ! Your Mandarin is SUPERB ! I took 10 years of Mandarin Chinese classes (including history, geography and language itself) yet I am nowhere close to your capabilities ! Not even close... Your intonation is also spot on. Well done !

I'm surprised by the kindness of Chinatown people.The 月饼 seller even started to teach you how to say 月饼 in Cantonese.

Enjoyed that video quite a bit. Our dad used to take us out to San Francisco every two years back in the 1970s and 80s. He had a lot of relatives from Hoiping(Kaiping). SanFrancisco's Chinatown is one of the best. Pretty amazing how many Mando speakers there are now from what I'm told as I haven't been there in a while. I guess I could get by with my broken Mandarin, but definitely need to brush up on it again.:)

I knew you would run into that first situation pulling out mandarin there hahah. SF is mostly Cantonese and LA is more mandarin. I just moved away from there so it's nice to see videos of the streets!

This was fascinating to watch! I live in San Francisco, near Chinatown. I have done my shopping there for years and years. I know every place you went. I like how people in Chinatown are simultaneously no nonsense but friendly. A long time ago I took night classes for a year in conversational Cantonese. It’s of little help, but better than nothing. I really admire your tremendous skills.

I work in the financial district of SF and I went to CT during my lunch hour almost everyday before the pandemic. Now I have been working from home since March and have not been there since. I didn’t know how much I missed it until I watched your video. 😢

Not going to lie, I personally think walking down the street talking to someone in a different language is always funny. Like the reactions you get. I live in the us, and speaking spanish is common, but speaking japanese isnt common. so i speak japanese here, and i get the weirdest looks. its fun!

It depends on the area of the US. I live in a small northern university town known for its music, so I know no Spanish speakers and a bunch of Japanese (but more importantly Hindi and Mandarin) speakers. Spanish is more abnormal for me to hear haha.

Even further than that, the Chinese came over here because they serve as crew members for the sailing ships that were looking for a way to India. With the perils of disease the crews was diminish captains develop a conscription process by Shanghai the Chinese sailors. When they got here they jumped ship and hid in Chinatown.

Most of Chinese in San Francisco Chinatown speak Cantonese.

Actually Taishanese. But Taishanese speakers usually understand and speak Cantonese.

Ah that is a charming video, thank you JJ! You mentioned the Monkey King referring to the murals... I was given the book "Journey to the West" as a birthday present and loved the character of Sun Wukong; I remembered the "Tales of the golden monkey " (?) TV series in the past which , though entertaining, did not to the story justice IMHO ! :)

Literally every CT is majority if not all Cantonese populated. and the reason why most Chinese in the US are from Guangdong province or hong kong is because the very first Chinese settlers and immigrants were cantonese. it wasn't until like 1900's that people from mainland china started coming to the US

@@dbuc4671 That was true, but it does depend on which one today. The Flushing Chinatown popped up after people starting coming over from Taiwan and the mainland, is probably the biggest one in America now, and is not predominantly Cantonese - ethnically or linguistically. But the historical one in Manhattan still is.

嗨 jj。 What I really like about the SF chinatown that you just showed us is the influence of "west coast hispanic/mexican" culture, which you can see throughout the video in various ways through the architecture, and the murals (which you kept calling graffiti, which is but they are, but "mural" culture is something of its own thing)

I lived in SF for about 20 years & used to spend a lot of time in Chinatown, including the AA bakery (I recognize the ladies there), so this brings back a lot of bittersweet memories. It's so strange to see the streets and stores so empty from the lockdown. Even the bakery: usually the place is packed and there's a pandemonium of chatter as people shout out their orders.
