Although I've known of Justus for years via his outstanding Instagram account, we only met in person for the first time a year ago in London. We became fast friends over a shared passion for men's style, watches, and many other things. As a guy in his early 20s who just discovered He Spoke Style yesterday, Brian comes across as that cool distant uncle who's always the best dressed at the family functions (and also slips you a 20 and gives you fashion and general life advice.) Subbed and seriously cannot wait for more!

I'm about a year out of college so I might not be in your target demographic, but I was just browsing for men's lifestyle/style content that's not hyper-masculine or click bait-y. I've followed Justus' Instagram for perhaps about 3 years now and he's one of the few people that I've followed the whole time I've been using Instagram for style inspiration. Both your style's are timeless and I think it shows in the longevity of your accounts

I'm not particularly a reader but committed in New Year to read more. A well-timed global pandemic means I've been reading Sapiens through lockdown too and I can vouch for it being deeply fascinating. But not so "short"!

I say that A good topic is the value of crafting yourself. As in learning and actually leather working, sewing and fitting. Then delineating to which ones are the most worth it given a set of restrictions based on where someone is at in life. As in age money mobility and time etc

Looking at the positive I can relate to spending more time with my wife, cooking and eating well. I have really been researching online gourmet food suppliers and filling our pantry with yummy and different things to cook. Not being with friends and not being able to travel are the things that get me down the most. I like the podcast idea, I'm always interested in content that includes style, music, art, food and travel. Would love to hear more about how your and your guests life's priorities change as you continue on your journey.

Brian, at 30:50 you said that a couple years ago, you and your team made the decision to focus more on luxury products. I'm glad you brought this up because I've been thinking about it for a while. You know, I feel like your initial approach with your channel was-as it's still written in your channel description-to offer approachable men's style advice. And in a lot of ways, you succed in doing so with well-versed videos and frankly, your undogmatic persona. But I, as a long-time viewer, also noticed that your channel now increasingly focuses on luxury items-or, better put, expensive items that are worth their money. They're still expensive though and I sometimes feel like there are better deals to be had elsewhere. I have wondered if you may at times feel like this kind of undermines the approachableness you want to offer. To me, you seemed concerned about the exclusivity aspect of luxury goods in the talk. It's my intent not to offend but instead offer constructive criticism. And by the way, this episode was great! Made me wish to tune in myself. ;)

Great question and no offense taken. Few things I'll mention. First, you seem to be equating approachable with affordable only. I'm talking about it in terms of being able to relate to the person (me, in this case). I think sometimes those who are steeped in luxury come off as elitist and exclusive. That's not what I'm about. Second, I've always considered what I do to be "attainable aspiration". If you go WAY back on the website, you'll see a very different picture of brands and so on--lots of J.Crew, et. al. And if I started this channel and made videos way back when, it would look the exact same way. This whole HSS thing has been a chronicle of my journey and evolution. As my business has grown, I've been exceptionally fortunate to experience many wonderful things and refine my tastes along the way--which I always try to share with those who follow me. The main point here in terms of the decision to focus more on luxury is really a way that I/we have been able to differentiate ourselves in a marketplace that has grown increasingly crowded and oversaturated. And then the main difference is that I've taken as much time as I have to learn as much as possible about the brands that I love and work with. Some people doing what I do couldn't tell you the difference between a fused and canvassed suit or even take the time to do a quick wikipedia search before making a video about a chronograph. That not only makes them look uninformed, but that is terribly damaging to a brand's credibility if they don't truly vet their "ambassadors" and choose to work with them. Luxury brands--REAL luxury brands--appreciate those who truly understand their story and passion. You see, it's not just a matter of price tag.

@@hespokestyle That is completely true. With other big channels, I sometimes get the impression that they *want* their audience to be uneducated so that cheap sponsors can cash in more easily. With that in mind, I do find your channel approachable and even more so, extremely relatable. Especially so for people who, as yourself, have refined their knowledge and taste along the years. Reading your comment section, I get a feeling that pretty much everyone around here is well-educated on style and has already found what generally works for them. This great relationship you keep to your audience is based on a rich knowledge and interest from both sides. In my eyes, this contributes to your niche, but strong standing, as Justus also implied. And I wouldn't want to change a thing about that. In other words: You're a style veteran's safe haven here on KZfaq-I'm just wondering about new sailors. Thank you for your thoughtful, elaborate answer.

Please ask more style questions in the future episodes. Would love to know how he developed his style, what sparked his interests in style, who he looks up to, how long it takes him to get dressed, does he plan his outfits, does he travel with a lot of stuff, what are his basics and must haves. What are some non clothing items that are essential etc.

We're hoping to do it twice a month depending on our schedules. It will eventually be up on pod platforms. Audio mix needs to be a little different. And thanks for going back to the old That's Its! It was fun but at the time I had to focus elsewhere, like KZfaq!

I did not expect the podcast to show up so early, I thought it was still in the planning stages! That was 30+min gone just like that. It was interesting to hear the thoughts and opinions of similar yet different minded people. Also digging the very natural flow to this, it almost feels like two friends catching up. Just to add my two cents: 9:00 Yes this was me totally a few weeks ago lol. I don't miss them at all too. 18:45 The image either of you on TikTok doing the dances was quite something. 29:00 I agree with Justus, even before COVID the channels/blogs/etc I've ended up following the most had their own niche. *edit* Also on meeting celebrities, it's really weird. Like you expect them to be of certain height but they might be much shorter, or they might not be quite so similar to their on screen personality, etc. I think the nature of where I met some of them also factored in but it's definitely a weird feeling when you come to expect one thing but receive something different. Alas. Great job Brian and Justus, hope to see this regularly! - Han

Really love your podcast idea. Gracious hosts and guests. I would really like if you could touch upon the concept of personal style by pushing style conventions, for example, like Shuhei Nishiguchi. What percentage of personal style consists of signature physical pairing of items (thick shawl cardigan over a suit), cut/drape (Ryo Takashima is a good example), physical attributes, lifestyle, and personality?

Great video as always, Brian. I like the podcast style, nice and conversational. In terms of the cocktails/drinks, I love scotch. Not for everyone but man can you get so many different flavours of scotch. Also, one thing with the video as a constructive criticism, I feel you didn't talk very much about style as much as you did about the influencer world and one another. That's fine, still enjoyed, but the title does say you and Justus are speaking about style.

Brian, I was infatuated with Gillian Anderson too... it was the whole X FILES imagery for me. Lol I got to tell her about a bazillion years ago at a showcase house that my designer friend and I did and I was a bit let down because I had built her up as this serious government authority and she was nothing like her character. She was laughing and bubbly and just a great person... Idk.... although, her last film UFO was intense and sparked my infatuation up again. Lol

could you do a 'ways' video on how to wear a waistcoat? I have had 2 or 3 three piece suits in my life and when the trousers go i can always continue wearing the jacket. but the waistcoat ends up looking at me forlornly as i rarely wear ith with a matching jacket and odd trouser. any suggestions would be appreciated as they usually end up being donated or worse yet ... binned.

Very interesting content! By the way, you should put the microphone straight, not vertical because this kind of microphone has the capsule perpendicular to the body of the microphone. I know that you get a good sound with the position you've used but if you try to put it the other way the sound would be much nicer.
