In this interview, Glen Scrivener talks to Jonathan Pageau. Jonathan is an icon carver, editor of the Orthodox Arts Journal and a public speaker. Through his KZfaq channel, he regularly explores symbolism and the meaning crisis. Here, Glen and Jonathan discuss symbolism in the book of Genesis, and why we often miss it.
Jonathan Pageau's (‪@JonathanPageau‬) KZfaq channel: / jonathanpageau
RESET is a series of conversations exploring the meaning crisis. With the help of cultural analysts and biblical scholars we're going back to the beginning - to Genesis, the West's great origins story - to hear the ancient texts speaking today.
Glen Scrivener is an ordained church minister and filmmaker. In this series he asks questions about conflict, suffering, death, sex, equality, science, and what it means to be human. This is the 17th interview in the RESET series: • RESET Interviews

I am a American from the south. I grew up in church then fell away into popular ideology for a while. Then realized it doesn’t produce anything good. I realized that everything good and fruitful in my life all had to do with my Christian heritage. And that I was failing to pass that on to my kids. I’ve woken up and now have re-found my faith. And this time it’s so much stronger. God bless you both

@M M May be one day you will get your wish to be a fly on the wall of my mind. But it is the mind of Christ that is what you are really craving for. You yearn for eternal salvation but you hate that it can only come from our Creator Jesus Christ. But you know it is true because He created you. He is calling all to salvation. Will you accept or reject Him? Accept Him and you will see His Glory. Reject Him and you will remain condemned. Why reject The Truth?
@paulwilliamson2882

@M M Your beef needs to be directed to Christ Himself. On the cross. His Bride is full of sinners. Christ came to heal the sick , not those who don't want healing. The evil men perpetrate comes from themselves not from Christ Jesus. It was men that put Him on the Cross. So look to Jesus Christ for the Truth of the Gospel, not only the sins of His children. My faith is not derived from the sins of mankind but from the knowledge that God Himself , Emmanuel, was with us and came to save us from our sins. You want to be saved from your sins. Only following Christ does that. Pointing fingers at religious evil acts does not save you. Christ is the light of all men. But men reject that light in favour of darkness. Do not reject the light. Accept it and be the City on the Hill.

@@mitchellc4 You are going to be waiting a long time if you think ON THE EARTH, means that it can't also be symbolic. But maybe you don't think they are separate! A few people, those for whom Christ has already returned, have been living within the Kingdom, and this has been the case for many people for millenia. Luke 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you. The Kingdom is no different than theosis.

Amazing how Glen brought Jonathan to life. It looks like Jonathan might have found the “moment” during the interview. I think Jonathan has this rare ability to access the collective unconscious where meanings are revealed in symbols, icons, etc. Even him, only sees the glimpses of it at the right moment when multiplicity converges... how many people experienced God’s glory in this conversation?

"The Christian Story is Inevitable" a perfect title and a conclusion that I came to as part of my religious and philosophical journey some time ago. In that regard, Christianity can reward the true believer and the agnostic in similar measure. The so called leap of faith which the agnostic refuses to take is the difference and I would argue that even this is inevitable. When I took my leap and reflected on it it felt like a small step and the first rather than the last. There was a feeling of immense relief for me, letting go of the reluctance and the resistance and embracing my faith in full.

I did not understand much of what Jonathan said, but I do know that the figurative language of Sacred Scripture is poetic in the same way that all poetry is poetic. The words used to created the signal images of prophetic passages are like all other words, and being like them they each have a definition which simply identifies what that thing is different from other things. But this definition also tells us in what ways this thing is like other things. These universal qualities which all things share in different proportions and combinations, like hot, hard, fluid, coarse, smooth, big, light, empty, inside, curved, tense, etc. are in analogy to spiritual things which have no material being. These qualities link heaven and earth, the material and spiritual by meaning. These universal qualities are the spiritual forms that compose our intellectual experiences. God uses material things like mountains, rivers, wells, birds, lions, right hands, etc. to create for us poetic analogies of invisible, intellectual things in the context of the metaphysical story He is embedding in a temporal story. Every man uses analogy in his everyday conversation without even thinking about I: "She ran like the wind!" Who cannot understand this? It is not difficult to understand what a mountain may mean spiritually. A mountain is a great heap of matter that is immovable. It must be climbed; it is that part of earth which most nearly reaches heaven, it is robed in clouds which reflect the sun, and shines white in its icy summits. From its heights one can see great distances below. What is this like in the intellectual universe if the matter that composes this spiritual mountain is idealogical? You may describe this one way and I another. You may bring out certain aspects and I others. But all of these things will complement each other if they are true to mountain and true to the context and true to the analogy of the Faith. (That is, if they do not present contradictions to the Faith.) This is not too hard. God does not intend to communicate just to brilliant people or to the most holy among us. Understanding is not the reward of sanctification but the means of it. The key thing for us to do is that in reading a passage, when one runs upon an image not immediately comprehended, we must stop and address ourselves to the Author of this passage Himself, who is omniscient and listening. We simply ask Him what it means. He will show us the meaning interiorly, or He how to think about it, or He will build in us the ground work that will make it possible for us to comprehend it. Let us add to that a little patience and a whole hearted expectation. And then, just stop and think about the meaning of the word. Take it apart. Define it and identify those qualities which may be analogous to invisible things. Begin to build for that passage a spiritual edifice of meaning. This is sooooooo interesting and rewarding. Go for it!

I love this idea of patterns in reality. John Vervaeke has his four types of knowing, we have modified this to include the Parabolic way of knowing (which was first put forth by Mary Kochan) where we use the parabolic to represent the patterns that we know of or see or sense in the world. Invariant patterns are those which are exemplified by the church because they most represrent reality through time and space. I talked to Karen Wong about this on her Meaning Code channel and did a 2 hour talk with Paul Vanderklay about these concepts, I think that what is being done when talking about symbols is just speaking of the parabolic way of knowing the world - those connections which we need to properly participate (which allows co-creation) with each other, nature and the ineffable.

The gospel is the GOSPEL OF THE KINGDOM! Jesus is going to return and set up the kingdom of God ON THE EARTH! God’s government ON THE EARTH! God resurrected the Messiah! The Messiah will resurrect his people! The destiny of the Messiah and his people is to be ON THE EARTH! The renewed restored earth! God also dwelling with them! Rev 21 Jesus said the Father is the only true God! John 17 3 And this is eternal life, that they know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom thou hast sent.

Jonathan Pageau's symbolic account of the Christian story has brought me closer than anything else to the point of conversion. It really does seem like a maximally meaningful story which can contain all of reality inside itself. I'm having trouble reconciling this with the rational part of me that notices that the doctrines of Christianity and the interpretations of the story have developed over centuries and seem to have forced historical claims to be made which go against the historical evidence.

it's still a bit enigmatic that all that history led up to this , how can this bit found the maximally great story ?

Democracy, as we know it, functions as a way for autocrats to enforce their will against the public while loudly proclaiming that the people asked for it.

Precisely. We do not really select the leaders but the illusion that we voted for them gives them the right to say we voted for them therefore we MUST support them.

As a Lutheran the way Johnathan explains theosis...I would say most Christians describe this aspect of knowing Christ. It seems that Orthodoxy just has more language for it.

Re: Hierarchy. In a discussion on C S Lewis, Doug Wilson and co noted how the author valued Dante's insight into such structure when 'viewed' from above, taking on an altogether different role. Very useful, and affirming of Tom's arguements.

That's really interesting...the lack of hierarchy in society today, that is. I've actually thought about the fact that when I read my Bible and see "king" or "lord," I know for certain that I don't have a good concept of those words.

I started listening to Jonathan Pageau following his very recent interview with Dr Jordan Peterson and found him fascinating. Glen Scrivener shows his tremendous in depth knowledge but refrains from overpowering the interview. My first introduction to the symbolism of scripture was a lecture through Prof F F Bruce on the meaning of the material used to build the Temple described in Leviticus and Jonathan grasps this excitement. I am still examining what the Risen Christ means and I note Jonathan had a different side to that meaning, whereas in his interview with Dr Jordan hit at the meaning when he considered Christ is the touching together of the Narrative and the Objective.

Jonathan, have you seen the recent show the Chosen? It does such a great job of portraying how Jesus changed the lives of people around him. The best adaptation of the gospel I've seen, and done in an intentional and creative way. Season 2 is coming out this year! I would be curious to hear your thoughts on the show in a video sometime.

This is how I summarize this point to my Sunday School class.. Jesus said...dont desire to be called Father or rabbi Because there is only 1 father in heaven.. So we all submit to one another under Christ. However like Ephesians 5 on marriage roles..we all have different roles such as teacher and generals for order

This is interesting. I’m a christian voluntaryist (some might refer to my position as free market anarchism). One of the big differences between my view and an anarcho-communist is that I affirm hierarchy as a fact, but I think this hierarchy requires the amen, that is to say I believe these hierarchies need to be entered into voluntarily. States don’t allow for the amen; they are coercive and violent by nature.

If someone comes to Christ because of a miracle it will be a miracle if they stay. Faith and belief first then the miracles will be seen everyday
@EmilynWood
@EmilynWood 3 жыл бұрын
I slightly disagree--I've heard many stories of people who came to know Jesus only because of miracles, answered prayers, either of them or their family members, and that one miracle changed their life and they chose to devote their life to God because of it. But I do agree that staying consistent in faith and belief is necessary in order to keep a relationship with God.

That didn't consume the marriage point was interesting I was thinking about that parable of the wedding party, the person who showed up with out thier party clothes got thrown out, and for me it was like i had seen the truth, but i was focused on the evil, and when you looking for evil you won't find good, but I hadn't recognised why I should be happy about it, that was a big roadblock for me

@drag0nfly_girl Other way around. We are a Constitutional Republic and the constitution provides the fundamental framework for how democracy plays out in our system. It's what [ideally] keeps democracy from merely being majority rule.
@ransombaggins9301
@ransombaggins9301 2 жыл бұрын
@drag0nfly_girl I'm NOT trying to be "that guy," so please don't read any attitude or arrogance in this. It's just that I have maybe two wheelhouses and history is one of them. 🤣 I'm saying that in the hierarchy it goes Republic, Constitution, then Democracy, the latter being the method by which people in the Republic are given a voice (and that voice is limited by the Constitution). Part of the confusion today is that most dictionaries give only very basic definitions of these terms, which sound very similar. Don't get me stared on schools. However, there is nothing inherent to a Republic that requires "democracy" as we experience it in the U.S. The reason this is important is because a constitutional republic, by its very nature, will always allow a voice for the people in one way or another. On the other hand, a Democracy without a Constitutional Republic will lead to mob rule, might-is-right, and historically, the downfall of nations susceptible to charismatic leaders. 😉 Anyways, that's more than anyone wants to read and I'm sure we are practically on the same page so I'll just shut up now. Have a wonderful day!
