The British Army is set to enhance its military capabilities with the addition of 589 Ajax armoured vehicles by the end of the decade.
At the core of this upgrade is the innovative 40-millimetre case-telescoped (CT) cannon.
Forces News reporter Simon Newton was given an exclusive look inside the French factory where this advanced weaponry is being produced.

You see "game-changing" and you think "clickbait". I was skeptical. But I left impressed with the design. Compact, dial-a-munition, high ROF, and ÷85% elevation. Wow. Every design has its tradeoffs. I have to think muzzle velocity suffers in the telescoping round design. Enough to matter practically? Doesn't seem so. The idea of riddling an enemy AFV at say 2,700m leaving 50 tungsten darts stuck into its armor is kinda funny. I also wonder if that clever rotating chamber part of autoloader will prove reliable. Or if the design limits propellant / muzzle velocity. But these seem issues which can be engineered if they are even issues.

It's the rate of wear of the barrel that has taken effort to deal with as I understand it. We are unlikely to be told what the end of that story turned out to be though.

Yes, have seen & read "game changing" weapons technologies many times over the decades. But this particular shell/cannon projectile design ---- embedding a projectile shell, MANY DIFFERENT KINDS of projectile shells, in fact... inside the tube holding the "gun powder"/explosive compounds ---- is quite unique. If you truly get 4 times the power by switching from a 30-mm cannon to an Ajax 40mm cannon with little change to existing light armored vehicles except loading contraptions (so governments don't have to invest $5B to $20B to come up with an entirely new light armored vehicle)... THAT really is the trick... The US Bradley, most widely used light armored vehicle in Ukraine, for example, could be fitted with this Ajax cannon ---- the US is in the process of upgrade the Bradley's main cannon from a 25mm to a 50mm ---- and it'd literally be several times more deadly, all from the unique projectile design as well as the re-loading contraption.... without giant over-haul's to the proven vehicle design....

@@kiabtoomlauj6249 " is quite unique" - not really, cased telescopic ammo is not a new concept , look at the G11 rifle. "Bradley, most widely used light armored vehicle in Ukraine," - nope, that would be the BMP1, BMP2 and tons of BTRs. "he US is in the process of upgrade the Bradley's main cannon from a 25mm to a 50mm" - nope, they are developing the Bradley successor, the XM30 with a 50mm Supershot round, basically a necked-up 35x228mm round. The 40mm CTA ammo is great, but they still have reliability problems with it, it is slightly more powerful than the NATO 35mm, it takes up less space , but it's significantly more expensive.

All new large military projects have initial problems and all have media and politicians screaming for them to be cancelled but in most cases the problems can be worked out to produce a reliable product in the end. The best approach is to make steady orders so improvements can be made along the way, not like the SA80 ordering gazillions in a big hurry and finding out afterwards they all need reworking.

This cannon and AA ammunition variant (assuming a decent cost/round), should be put into anti-drone trials ASAP. If these trials are successful, we need to procure a dedicated AA platform with a similar turret, destined to be placed at FODs for the army and air force, as well as to be available at every UK RAF base, as the state of air defences for the home country right now is shocking. A combination of cheaper systems such as AA guns and DEW systems, combined with higher end GBAD missile systems like sky sabre, providing cover for UK and overseas bases should absolutely be a top priority for HMG right now.

Drone warfare both pro and anti is obviously a top priority for every defense ministry not comatose. That being said, strategic countermeasures based on gun systems almost certainly lose the economic exchange contest. This gun is attractive because it can give an AFV at least some anti-drone potential. These days if you are going to mount a gun on a vehicle it may as well be able to shoot skyward.

@@Masterafro999 360 degree high end thermal imaging with AI detection, target classification and tracking along with automated turret movement and firing is pretty standard these days. All of the active protection system rely on similar methods. For IFV's & APC's it was only when the squaddies got their hands on development models did someone ask for a button to disable the defences so they didn't get automatically killed while dismounting. NAMMO has a 40mm grenade launcher turret with programmable airburst munitions that swat drones for a lot cheaper than this, but a grenade launcher isn't a cannon.

Nothing will convince me that the Ajax was the right choice. When CV90 was right there already owned by BAE a British operated company. A well tested ralatively cheap and liked package on the cusp of an upgrade package itself at the time of descision making for the project andlikely could have ammounted to significantly more being built for the same price and in service at a faster rate. Someone at the MoD must have close ties to General Dynamics UK for them to be awarded the contract.

Surely GDUK is British operated if its in Wales? and LMUK making the turrets are in England? Whilst CV90 was an existing (Swedish) design - the vehicle Ajax was based on was also existing. The MoD made so many changes to it, it became a new thing. I don't think it would have been any different if they picked CV90, they would have still gone down the route of making it bespoke to the point of it having loads of issues. UK defence procurement needs to learn to buy off the shelf more.

We did a lot of this development back in the 70s, on the US LAVs. Although this is not direct "caseless ammunition" it still has lot of the same problems. Fouling of the mechanisms was a major problem. The big advantage of a 40mm is that it can have an active warhead. Lower sized rounds (as yet) only contain dumb fuses. The 40s can also contain directed explosions, for specific purposes. These are already available on larger rounds, such as the 120s. Mortars, in particular are very useful in these modes, since the blast and brizance can cut through concrete and metal. Also, since the gun is balanced, it can go up/down much faster, and if the turret can keep up, it can outmaneuver a heavy tank, allowing it to chip that enemy to death, with tiny cuts. When we did HiMag, with a hypervelocity-75, that vehicle could outgun any modern tank, except for direct front-to-front contact. Unfortunately in modern warfare, all of these vehicles are sitting-ducks to drone warfare, and are probably not useful as they now stand. Will require additional short-range protections from overhead 2-kilo rounds. The Ukraine war is showing all of these weaknesses.
@joelau2383

It still have same cost problem. It is difficult to make a sabot round accurate so they are expensive. This gun design can only fire sabort round, even the cheap high explosive round must be fitted with sabot for firing.

@brunonikodemski2420
@brunonikodemski2420 3 күн бұрын
@@mikedittsche The old VTFs were only available in the larger rounds, but there is NO reason why a modern VTF could not be emplaced into a 30. With the best electronics and staged detonators, that would allow about one-cubic-inch of explosive, and if you did the outer shell correctly, you could probably get a man-killing/injuring blast pattern of about 10-meters. However, against drones, that pattern could probably work out to over 30-meters, with at least 80% probability of disabling. Drones have zero armor, so would be susceptible to almost anything over the size of a half-BB, if it had a velocity of over 700-meters/sec. This should be easily done, and probably the only reason that its not, is due to the cost of the round. Dumb rounds are made for pennies on the dollar, so cannot afford anything expensive inside of them.

This seems like a great replacement for Bradley type vehicles. The dart seems like the round used on Abrams tanks, scaled down. That super shotgun shell form-factor seems really really handy. Shipboard, it could give aircraft, drones, and fast pirate style boats, a real headache. A worthy follow on to the old Bofors 40mm.

Its about time someone looked at ammunition design, both size and weight, with todays materials it should be easy, but not only have they achieved that its 4× more powerful than the traditional round, like he said everyone is going to want lighter, small more powerful rounds for every gun possible, however it ALL depends on the cost, if its 4x more expensive (thats just a guess from me) then getting the cost down will be critical, i remember the US designing a special round for the cannon on the zumwalt destroyer, the cannon was designed to only fire this special round, unfortunately the cost of the rounds was astronomical ( thats being generous too, it was totally ridiculous, somewhere along the lines of tens of thousands of dollars per round) even the US government with 700+ billion dollars yearly defense budgets wouldn't pay those prices, so the cannons became useless, they are going to be removed, so that means getting the cost down wast doable, so lets hope these special rounds for this new gun have taken costs seriously, otherwise its a great idea but totally unpractical, only fit tor the movie's, lets hope not, id love to see this cannon destroying Russian tras.

Had the pleasure of getting hands on with this system at Shrivenham, The issues they had with the weapon are the laser etched barcodes on each round that the system use for identifying the rounds it has stored are very very very easy to become unreadable. Any dirt, grease, oil, even fingerprints on them stuffs the system and has to be stopped and fixed. It seems like an innovative idea, but an immature one. We should have used a more proven system rather than throw in with this new design.
@Twirlyhead
@Twirlyhead 4 күн бұрын
Very few if any weapons systems don't have teething issues. The future is here already, get this cutting edge system in there now and deal with any issues along the way. Even if the barcode system does fail surely there will be an override, either by design or a workaround, enabling less automated selection.

Surprised they went for an optical system - forced on them by warehouse inventory requirements? Would have thought NFC more likely, or even a physical key, like notches. I wonder if one could measure the forces (different mass / CoM) required by the mechanism to move rounds internally and infer from that what they are. Would you be able to distinguish them in the dark? I wondered at 1:48 if they were using 'resistor' colour codes!

For what the main gun on a IFV has to do, a 30mm gun is still better because you can carry more ammo and give more suppression fire that way. There is not much point to having more firepower from a medium caliber gun, because "more" will still not be enough to penetrate a Main Battle Tank from the front and for every other thing you might possibly do with that gun (like shooting unarmored or thinly armored targets, giving suppression fire, trying to take out the optical systems on a tank), the fire power of a 30mm gun is more than enough.

@@louisgordon4388 it is a French company that BAE bought. As part of the agreement in their purchase they do not revenue share or share IP with the parent BAE company. It is the same with BAE Systems in the US. They are essentially a completely different company than BAE in the UK. IF BAE UK wanted to produce or obtain some sort of IP from the US BAE Systems they would have to purchase it from them.

Looks good. Unique ammunitions though, which means another thing that must be supplied to where it's needed in plentiful supplies. Without ammunition its a lump of metal. We shouldn't have too many types of cannon that all need different types of ammunition. It we're happy with CT40 then it should be fitted across the IFV fleet to keep supplies and logistics as simple as possible.
