I really like how honest these documentaries tend to be about shortcomings of the serials, it makes them feel a lot more genuine and authentic than a lot of special feature documentaries I've seen. I've never really hated the Mandrels though, I always thought they did their job okay next to some of the truly terrible monsters in the show's run.

Ive never had a problem with the Mandrels. They were one of my first monsters when i became i fan, and they've stuck with me ever since i was 4!

When I was little, my dad showed me this episode and I was so afraid of the mandrels but watched This episode over and over again

These "mini-docs" about Doctor Who are always interesting. But the best part of this one is the AMAZING rendition of the Doctor Who theme at the end credits!

I've always wanted to see the Mandrels make a comeback. If they ever do decide to bring these monsters back, I really hope that they try to make them much more threatening and monstrous than what this episode did for them.

I love how after SO many episodes of Doctor Who the production team would say yeah, we should stick to filming monsters in the shadows... and then repeat the mistake next week xD

Someone got it into the head that the future should always look bright and colourful (possibly someone who saw Star Wars) and suddenly all the stories are set in buildings with bright white corridors or shiny metallic walls. And it's amazing how many writers point out their original script called for a look similar to the Nostromo from Alien; dark and dilapidated. Perfect for disguising a low budget. Look at Earth Shock with its opening cave sequences and dingy freighter. They're all quite correct that it was upper management decisions that drove the Classic Series into the ground.

I love this episode, the anti-drug episode, the mandrels were one of the best monsters in Doctor Who, I thought they looked great when I was a teenager, and I still do today, and they were a drug that made you go psychotic, brilliant.

To make matters worse the beeb hyped up these monsters as being utterly terrifying and one of the scariest Who monsters ever. You can imagine the viewers' disappointment when they actually showed up xD

The thing about Nightmare of Eden is it's the ideas that are great. And like a lot of Doctor Who stories the ideas are great but the effects...not so much. The thing is all the actors are still giving it their whole, despite what's around them.

Oh no, the full story. It's also better then the webcasts & audio drama etc because Gareth Roberts used the most recent scripts that Adams updated after they started filming - there was a whole extra scene! Roberts also added in a few things to make the story make more sense.

That era was a disaster sadly, whether it be lighting, photography, direction, casting, costumes (I cannot understand how the Mandrel can be actually defended- it klooks like something from a local amateur dramatics production) , music. Such a shame.

The lighting is desperately unsubtle, the shots are all wrong and the whole thing ends up making the costume look like something from a local pantomime. Classic era is ace..apart from the JNT era to a large degree, sad times for the show that ultimately lead to its extended hiatus.
