Simply beautiful. I'm a Brit and had a very similar experience with a chap who thought his Army title of Garrison Sergeant Major gave him some authority over a bunch of Royal Marines Commandos who'd just arrived in Camp Bastion after a month at a patrol base. We were unshaved, filthy, no rank or insignia on display and far too tired for his peacetime bullshit. We answered each of his questions/orders with "Fuck Off Pongo!" The memory of it still makes me grin.

@@jarraandyftm- before you try and throw that out why not do even a tiny bit of research. Bastion officially had a GSM post from '08 but had a WO1 unofficially using that title when I first 'visited' in '06. For example, try searching for WO1 Cox (the former RMAS GSM) and you'll see it listed in his past jobs (it wasn't him btw) and there are plenty of others out there, it should take you about 7secs on Google to confirm your lack of knowledge on this topic. Then feel free to come back here and admit you were wrong and apologize. No hurry, I'm on a train to Glasgow so I've got a few hours.

I remember in Tall Afar Iraq I had words with the CSM of our entire Squadron. This dude was a freaking legend from the Gulf War. I was grabbing my food and came up to me and said something. I don't remember exactly, but I think it was about my facial hair, or how I was wearing my pants. Not tied up at the bottom, and just draped over my boots. Whatever he said to me, I didn't wanna hear it. I said something back to him and he got mad because I wasn't at Parade Rest. We started to have words. I was respectful but I stood my ground. All of a sudden some other Sergeant walked up and pulled the CSM to the side to say something in his ear. The CSM came back to me and asked me, "Were you on that overnight mission that just got back on base?" I responded with a " Yes Sergeant Major." He immediately told me to grab some food and get some rest. Then he walked off. Shout out to him for understanding the situation.

I was in Afghanistan on FOB Delaram 2 in 2010, and there was a MSgt and an officer (I don't remember his rank) who would sit at the exit of the chow tent that you had to go through to get to the tables to sit down and eat. If he saw a haircut he didn't like, frog gear, or any other "unauthorized" uniform appearance he would personally stop the Marine/Sailor, have them dump their tray in the garbage, hand them an MRE out of the box he had next to him, and kindly tell them to get out. That same deployment my buddy saw an Army SOF operator bust up in the tent and almost throw hands with him after cursing him out so badly they went outside. We had a SOF element out of that base who got into a huge firefight and they called for a HIMARS fire mission but it got overridden or something in favor of that same MSgt's QRF going out there and stealing all the glory. In short, the QRF never made it there in time, resulting in one of the operators getting severely injured and scores of their Afghan counterparts being injured or killed.

I had a staff Sargent who jammed everyone for walking around with their hands in their pockets on freezing cold German days. Then one day, we had formation on a very cold day. I was in the front row, and we were released after our row was inspected. I walked around the back of the formation and all the Sargents were in the last row and he had his hands in his pockets and I yelled out his name then, "Get your hands out of your pockets" and the General and other officers looked in time to see him fumble to get his hands out. I kept walking but heard something about being an example to the men. All the soldiers he had jammed were laughing at him and he was bright red. Sure the cold wind had something to do with it but I believe he was extremely embarrassed.

We had a MSgt who referred to our battery as 'the bastard step children' of the battalion. Let's just say we were a bit unruly and not quite by the book and had some disciplinary problems. During Desert Storm and the push through Kuwait in '91, we out fired and out moved all the other batteries and even performed some infantry work (small fire fights, taking prisoners, ect) and made a night move/attack through two mine fields to outflank an Iraqi position that was still functioning. We received the Navy Unit Commendation ribbon and even praise from the CO (Lt Col Stuart) and were even occasionally approached and congratulated by Marines from the other batteries.

At the Camp Wilson (29 Palms) barber shop I saw a gunny tell a Marine to get back in the chair and get a real haircut after the barber gave this guy the lowest fade possible. Said Marine laughed, grabbed his blouse from the hook, and put it on while saying "This should do just fine, Gunny". He was a Marsoc MSgt. Gunny turned the reddest I have ever seen a human.

Winter of 2001, Great Lakes. Id just graduated boot camp, and was pulling supplemental base security duty (9/11 had happened a bit prior, remember) while waiting for transfer orders to my A school, which had been delayed. Had a 2400-0600 gate watch, which I did with some Seabee E-5s. They sat in the shack with the guns while I checked IDs. Around 0400 an RDC chief pulls up for entrance into the base, having forgot his ID, but was due for duty at like 0430 and lived 45 mins away. Orders were orders though, no ID no entry. He starts yelling at me, calling me recruit and asking for my training division number, which ofc I no longer had. Anyways, as this goes on, the Seabees come out, one with the shotgun and the other with a sidearm. The one with the sidearm moseys over, rests his hand on the butt of the pistol and asks real casual like, "Is there a problem, chief?" Chief responds, much more politely, with his eyes on the Seabee's hand, that this RECRUIT is denying him entry. Seabee goes "He's not a recruit, and if you don't have an ID, you can't get in per standing orders from the CO. If you want the number for his office, I can get it for you". Chief gives up, asks me for my name and rank, which I give, tells me he'll remember me, turns around and leaves. The Seabee PO looks at me with a grin after he was out of sight and said "I bet that felt good" It did, I cant lie. Still warms my heart to this day.

My last duty station was 29 Palms. On my very last day in the Corps, I was walking to S2, S3, whatever it was called, to get my last sign off before EAS. I had a SgtMaj stop me on the side walk to point out that I was unshaven. I held up my paperwork, and told him that this was my no shave chit, and walked on. He was pissed, but I had a huge grin.

Two Nine was a glorious place. I went into IPAC a few beers deep like give me my shit you fucking assholes. Long story short this was after my EAS. Some corporal female probably only a year in was trying to give me shit about smelling like beer. Like this was the Hill she was going to die on, trying to correct a fellow E-4. I was having none of it, started getting louder like I need my shit. I am tired of getting fucked around. A SNCO rolls over gets the gist of what is occurring looks this bitch in the face and says, “what are you doing, just go get his shit and get him on his way.” It was great. It was a different beast in some of them barracks. Skirting by on so many close calls. God we were insane.

One of the tricks was to hold a box and say "hey hold the door for me." They finally got so mad they posted his picture at all facilities saying to work with our security officer when the real purpose was to let everyone know he was the security officer which ruined his effectiveness.

Was deployed to an outpost in Khost Province in 2012. This was a small outpost with only 90 active servicemembers running missions and operating the guard towers. A helicopter landed one day and I was filling the generators with fuel. One of the soldiers from the heli was my friend from high school! I ran up to him and said,"Hey, Eric! How's it going!?" We hadn't seen each other since high school. He was a lieutenant at the time and I was a specialist. The NCO assigned to him ran up to me and started losing his SHIT about how informally I addressed an officer, but Eric quickly assured him that it was fine. We both had rough deployments that year, and it was a blessing to run into an old friend from high school.

@@thejohnbeckDid my service as a conscript in Swedish Army early 80’s, I get what you mean about the constant threat of being nuked or invaded. I remember on one of our training maneuvers standing in a fox hole in the middle of the night, guarding a small road. It pitch black and eerie silent, it was so quiet that you could hear a mouse fart. Then it dawned on 18 yr old me, the weight of reality of what we where training for could become reality. It was the same year a Soviet sub had stranded far into military restricted waters and tension was high. As I still remember that revelation, I think that marks the time when I stopped being a boy and became a man. It may sounds silly as we wasn’t in war and couldn’t be deployed in a war zone, nobody was threatening me or firing live ammo at me and after 10 months of training I would be a civilian again - still standing in a foxhole alone in pitch dark in the middle of a forest in dead silence made my mind to catch up of what we where being taught, one day could become reality. But to be honest, today’s issue with Russia is way more scary then the Cold War as most of Europe has been taken with their pants down, including my own country.

When I first got to theater we did a "stand to" drill, my boys were on the wall on our flank within a minute, boots, pants, webbing rifles, CSM went off his rocker because they had singlets on instead of DPM. He did another one the next night (we new it was coming), so i told the boys to take their time, lasses, buttons, hat the whole 9 yards, took 3 mins this time, the feed back was "much better, this is the standard i expect". This cunt would rather us take time to look good than get on the hesco ready to fight in the minimal time. Worked out of patrol bases after that with no HQ, so much better. We asked our Guns if there was anything he wanted. He said yeah, some body wash and a loofah if they have it. We weren't going to see showers again for a long awhile. Fucking Air Force base had toilet cleaner and a toilet brush. We bought that instead as a joke, and put it in his tent with all the other Staff NCO's. When they all got back to their tent, they were busting him hard. Then we showed up with his real request. He took it in stride like a Champ. Greatest Enlisted man I ever served under. I was a Army MSG(E8) in Bosnia in the 90s, serving with a Special Ops Unit. We had our on compound on a larger base ran by regular division (maybe 1st CAV? IDR)...I went to their HQ to talk to their logistics NCO that I had met only once the day before, and he was in civilian clothes at the time. He didn't give me his name, only his call sign: "Big O". Inside the building I introduced myself to some young captain (O-3) with a scowl and a stick up his ass and asked where I could find the log NCO. He said, "What's his name?" I said I didn't know, but that he was about 5'10", lean build, gold tooth in the front, nice guy, and he was black. The captain came unglued and jumped up and screamed at me with a red face, "I don't know who you think you are, Master Sergeant! We don't see black and white, we only see green!!!" Without batting an eye, I said, "Ok, then he's the dark green one." His face got so red I thought he was going to have a stroke. Then I hear loud laughter coming from an office behind him and a colonel comes out and tells the captain to go take a coffee break and that he would deal with me. The colonel waited until the door closed and said, "That is the funniest shit I have ever heard in my career!" I told him I didn't mean anything bad by saying that the guy was black, as I couldn't have cared less. It was just part of the description of wht the guy looked like. The colonel said he knew what I meant and that the junior officers these days (1998) were so beta and politically correct that they'd lost all common sense.

Our 1st sergeant enlisted as motor t. Our company commander officially ordered everyone to never give him a radio, because he couldn't talk without sounding like an idiot and would break radio etiquette, for example using real names. He would come up to us (0311s) and try asking us infantry knowledge, which we would answer, and he would try to incorrectly correct us, which we would then correct and his response was always "I'm pretty sure you're wrong, but I'll look into that and get back to you." He would never get back to us. He also told us multiple times to check under the sand bags on post, because he suspected there may be IEDs planted under them. 24/7 manned posts. Covered in c-wire. Potential IEDs. And he wanted us to check by lifting the sandbags up. When we first arrived in Iraq, he also forgot his NVGs on the plane. Then there was our fat gunny (back in the states) who would nonrec Marines for being slightly overweight, even though he never wore his blouse since it barely fit him. He'd drive his POV to the field when everyone else had to hike 10+ miles, then after a few hours he'd drive home to sleep in his bed. Constantly berating us for being "pieces of shit" sounding borderline schizo. Then he got relieved of command because he got arrested for beating his wife, drunk and disorderly conduct, and a bunch of other shit. I could continue but you get the idea.

Haha! I was walking with another Lance Cooley on a sandy base when an Army Captain walks by. Without breaking stride we both say “good morning sir.” He immediately loses his mind and starts his self indulgent tirade all to tell us that he needs a salute to feel like he didn’t make the wrong decision by not opting for the Corps. Eventually we tell him that our standing orders are never to render a salute when we’re in theater, regardless of who we might offend. Who the hell gave you those bullsh*t orders?” Well, he was so focused on his feelings, that he didn’t notice our company CO (Major) and our battalion CO (full bird) in our wake, who stood back and watched the whole thing. Well up walks the brass, Army Cap tries to salute, then the fireworks began. Ever so briefly we put our hands in our pockets and say “have a good morning sir” and exit stage right. Our officers caught up with us a few mikes later… Pretty epic.

Had one of those spit and polish Marines in my company in Vietnam. One night as we were about to go out on patrol, my squad leader was going over where we were headed and our place in the patrol unit, and where we would bivouac for the night. I look up on this small mount, there is this staff sergeant, fresh from Parris Island as a head DI. With hands on his hips, he tells the corporal, "Belay all of that I will talk to you in the Morning." Even the Vietnamese kids around our compound couldn't stand this guy. His very first firefight, and the DI came unglued.

@@aztumtheknightofwumbo7060 both of these are true, that coupled with the 20-30 years of service, the indoctrination of “this is how we have always done things” is very prevalent. Its the reason the Army loved SGMA Dailey so much. He was young, he gave us back dress Pinks and relaxed the tattoo policy as well as made numerous other changes that were good for younger troopers, E-1/E-5, and made them want to stay in.

We all had similar incidents at that px. If it was the same one (I was there in 04). It was right next to the wash down area where we'd clean humvees after being out doing grunt shit. Never failed, you'd be dirty, smelly, and disgusting from very obviously being outside of the wire and just want to grab something cold for you and your boys to drink when some polished pog would be in there jumping your sht like you were on base at Lejeune.

As a civilian who works on Lejeune often and interacts with military guys regularly, you can tell who the real BMFs are and who are the pencil pushing dorks getting off on a little authority. The killers are the nicest guys you've ever met 99% of the time. And the coming from college "officers" are usualy cunts. They promote "yes men" and flog the guys who should be the real leaders and officers.

Was doing a ruck march for PT one morning and saw two 5th Group guys, one an E-7, the other is an E-6. I was 101st at the time, and our division CSM seen them and high-tailed it over to them. They'd been ruck-marching for PT as well and had their patrol caps kicked back, longish hair, and hands in their pockets. Division CSM started yelling at them and the -6 looked to the other guy and said, "hey Bob, who the fuck is this guy? Bob was like, not a clue, but if he has an issue, he can go see the Group CSM. They kept walking and the 101st CSM finally gave up after looking around and seeing he was drawing a crowd with his whining... I turned around and best feet in the opposite direction so i didn't get caught in his line of sight as I'm laughing at his dumb ass...

Always hated those guys that had nothing better to do than to break balls in a combat zone..... All I care about is for guys to be combat ready: clean rifle, full canteens, gear set up and taped ( minimize sound ) and ready for whatever mission we had.... As for the guys with beards, I made it a point to make friends with them.....

Had a similar experience as an Army PFC at the gate. An ODA dude from 1st group went for a run on BAF and got stopped by some CSM from the 101st right in front of the camp gate. There was some back and forth between them which I was too far to hear and then the ODA guy just takes off quick flashes us his badge to come on so we let him through as he passes shouts “FUCK YOU FAT ASS” to the CSM who then comes waddling up demanding we let him on but of course didn’t have the special badge needed so we turned him away. To which he tried to get in MY ass and began yelling at me until a member of the 3 letter agency we were working for calmly stepped out of the gate, walked the the man away while talking to him and patted him on the shoulder before the now sad CSM dropped his head and walked away.

My dad was in the Army in WW2. He was a surgical nurse/medic in the Philippines. Well they got a new officer..a 90 day wonder (OCS school for 3 months) and tried to pull rank and rules on them. This was a hospital unit. It was much more like a hospital state side. Well, they got this guy drunk one night, and after he passed out, lifted his mosquito netting for about 15 mins, enough to get the entire bed area filled with bugs, and then put it back down, so the bugs were trapped. Sure enough...BOOM ...Malaria. Bad enough to get him evaced to Hawaii. LOL!!

Do you even know what POG means? Where did it originate from? I highly doubt it, so I'll educate you on the subject matter. POG means Personnel On Ground. And it has origins in the Air Force. An Air Force Lt. Colonel, who was a pilot, coined the unflattering term to mock, intimidate, and belittle Ground support Airman. Even Navy pilots picked up this term. Air Force Times magazine did a piece on this a few years back. Both military branches were trying to rid this toxic behavior by telling pilots to "knock it off" as it hinders the mission set of ALL service members.
