Dealing with Canyon is however not very problematic, and certainly not problematic enough to justify 4k… The bike industry is not adapting and persists on using old business models in a globalized world. Not very unlike what’s going on in the automotive industry… Love the channel, keep it up!

As an owner of a Crux Expert, it’s light weight enough to hold candles with some of my roadies friends in the road rides as well as lend its own in the cross and gravel rides. I got the Crux 25 days ago and was well aware of the new Grail. After having a Canyon Aeroad, I will really take the customisation route anyday. The fully integrated cockpits are a joke. I can’t even get an aftermarket one unless I really haggle the customer service.

I’m glad you’re doing this comparison video as they’re both bikes I’m considering at the moment. My two biggest questions I have for you are how you feel about the increased reach on the Grail and having to use a smaller stem as a result, and if you think it would be a good choice as a CX bike for a few days out of the year. I’ve tried using an 80mm stem on my Grizl and couldn’t stick with it due to always feeling like I would dump the bike if I tried to turn the handlebars even the slightest. That setup would be the same reach as going a size down on the Grail, which I’ve considered doing because of just how massive the bike is. The Crux seems to be a fantastic do-it-all bike, and with the mentioned concerns I have with the Grail, am leaning more towards now.

I'm very keen on the Grail, but I'd be interested to see how the CFR compares to the CF SLX8. Looking at the specs of both, the extra £2k for the CFR doesn't seem worth it.

I went for the Crux because of its versatility. Simple, no integration, no proprietary parts and the ease of maintanance. Its light, agile and super fast on the road as well as gravel. It probably the best bike I haveever had and I also ride the tarmac sl7. If I had to keep only one It would keep the Crux.

Thank you David! So appreciate your video on the subject. Can't thank you enough. Myself, I was firmly "stuck in the mud" as it were deciding btw these two rides. My only question is if you lived in Los Angeles instead of Cotswold how that might influence your thoughts btw the two bikes. While having the ability to go wider than a 42 is certainly desirable. I'm not sure how critical it is in my part of the world. Love to hear your thoughts on that as I know how much you enjoyed sampling our fine champagne gravel out here. Again super grateful for what you do. Such an enjoyable channel to watch. My verdict and hard earned $ is going to... the Grail. While the Crux is more proven and no brainer of a choice. I am throwing caution to the wind and ordering the Grail. I'm a size small with them but will still order the pro version of their handlebar when available to better dial things in and plan on 100% buying a new set of wheels. Got my eyes on a few choices that will drop btw 300g to 400g. Hope you get a chance to get back out west again. Temps have finally cooled off and hitting today's ride with nothing but blue sky and 73 degrees. Cheers!

While I'm extremely happy with my Crux Pro it is crazy stiff. Out of the box it was 16 Pounds. I live in the mountains so I appreciate the low weight. My rides are usually 60% gravel\40 road. There's absolutely nothing proprietary which I love. Just way too expensive...

I was deciding between those two bikes aswell. In the end I was put off by the lack of tire clearance and the wide handlebar. Sure the UDH standart and the downtube storage are nice but not a must for me. Eventually I went for the Crux Comp that I found on sale online. I upgraded the wheelset to DT Swiss GRC 1400 and a Garbaruk 10-50 cassette and am super happy with my setup. As soon as the drivetrain wears out and GRX di2 is out (hopefully) I‘ll upgrade the groupset too. The price will maybe land 10% higher than the canyon with all the upgrades but it will be my dream build.

The two bikes need to have a baby. Lightweight bike with 45mm clearance, in and on frame storage, non proprietary flexible seat post, option for external handlebar mounting, slightly slacker steering, ability for 1x and 2x gearing. I like the looks of the crux but I don’t like the lack of frame mounting options and the steering is a bit too twitchy for the rough gravel and docents for me.

@barrowsworm1226

Thanks David! I would choose the new Grail as I am looking for and appreciate the higher stability, as well as the aero touches, in frame storage, and improved frame compliance. The Grail has a shorter seat tube for a given size, allowing for more exposed seat post and, subsequently, more seat post flex. It appears the Crux has too much cyclocross in its blood to suit my riding (long seat tube to allow easier shouldering perhaps). I also would prefer the longer/slacker Grail for my riding. Here in Colorado most gravel riding is fast, and long distances, so aero and stability are plusses, and it is dry, so fitting a 45 mm tire is probably OK if one needs it, although I always end up on 40 it seems. I do dislike that I cannot purchase a Grail frameset, but Canyon prices are such that I can work around that, even to the point of stripping a frame and selling the parts to end up with a custom build.
@louisvuittondom
@louisvuittondom 7 ай бұрын
Better tape that Grail up if you are squeezing 45mm tires on that Grail… idk where you’re riding in Colorado but our bikes are always muddy in Colorado. Also, the seatpost he has on the model in the video is the only one that doesn’t come with the post that is designed to flex while riding
@barrowsworm1226

CO, Boulder area: our soils are mostly sandy, and the weather is mostly dry. Even when wet, mud build up is rarely a problem, if ever. Most of the time I ride with 40 mm G One RS tires, as they suit my needs perfectly for the fast gravel riding and racing I prefer. Pretty sure, for the few times I ride a bit more chunkier routes, that 45 mm RS would work fine in this frame. Of course if I was going on a truly muddy ride, I'd be riding narrower tires anyway-so no worries there. As for the seatpost, I can fit on a M Grail, and have a a bike which is 23 mm longer than my present one, with .5 degree slacker HA and 6 mm more BB drop-this is going to be more stable at speed-and the seat tube is way shorter, exposing more seat post and allowing more seat post flex vs my current bike. Note that the carbon layup on the new Grail D shape seat post is higher flex than what they use for the road bikes-noted by Canyon. Sure this is not the same amount of flex as the former leaf spring design, but it is also not overly heavy-I like fast gravel rides, covering long distances, climbing mountains, and racing, and this bike suits my needs better than any other bike I can find.@@louisvuittondom

@barrowsworm1226
@barrowsworm1226 6 ай бұрын
Not really an option, but I am not concerned about a test ride-this bike is the only one I am aware of which has the geometry and features I am looking vs. my current bike (Stigmata 3). With the new Grail, I can ride a medium frame, and get a longer reach and wheelbase, a lower BB, and a slightly slacker HA, all leading to more stability, which I want in a big way. The Stig 3 is a little to Cyclocrossy for me, which is the same with the Crux. Additionally, frame storage is a big plus for everyday riding, allowing one to ditch the seat bag. Plus, the Grail has a much shorter seat tube vs my Stig 3, or the Crux, allowing for more exposed seat post for more compliance-long seat tubes are stupid (leading to a heavier frame and less compliance) for a gravel bike, if you are not looking for something to ride 'cross on. The aero factor of the Grail is a bit of a plus, but not a big deal, but the longer/lower geo is the main thing for me-this makes sense for a real gravel bike, which is not compromised by having 'cross design features. In fact, there are huge differences between what works right for cross and gravel, and any bike designed to suit both is going to be a severe compromise. Gravel events are long, and fast, and most turns are often sweepers. Here in CO, most rides and courses are pretty wide open and fast. Cyclocross is the opposite: super short events, at mostly slow speeds, with lots of very tight slow speed turns, and steep short climbs and descents. To me the new Grail is a purpose designed gravel bike for fast rides and racing-just what I am looking for.@@louisvuittondom

Now I need a chainsuck plate (fell off somewhere), and it is not available. Canyon said, "Sign up for newsletter to be notified of all new gear arrival," so I could possibly get one in "Spring 2024." I absolutely love the classic and lively colorsappearance of the crux and the standard parts used but its limited to 1by only and has no mounts at all. I love the value of a grail in cf slx version, 2by option but dont like the proprietary parts that make it difficult to adjust and to service. I love the giant which is in between the two and heard it has really great riding comfort and easy servicable. Can you point me to a bike for commuting, gravel rides and fast road rides?? I believe the answer would be the giant, but the crux is just so lovely and triggers me the most. But 1by for road rides and no mounting options doesnt make it a good commuter bike doesnt it? Couple of things… 1. I don’t understand why you need an aero frame for gravel. 2. I don’t understand why bike companies are following mtb geometry principles (longer/slacker) that were designed for straight line high speed stability when the limiting factor tp speed on a gravel bike is rubber on the trail, probably more a marketing thing. 3. Why a new gravel bike wouldn’t take a 47 tire, especially seeing that it is promoting longer slacker marketing principles… 4. Why you’d want to lose the adjustability of a separate stem and handlebar especially on something like a gravel bike where the rider occupies so many different positions on the bike and fit needs to be dialled in. I have a crux comp and its excellent but more expensive than a canyon. I have no idea why someone would pay so much for for the sworks frame over the normal version to save 100 grams 😂

Trouble with the Grail is complete lack of personality, it’s just a bland collection of parts. Original Grail had charisma. Crux is a beautiful bike. All modern gravel bikes are capable. And David has never reviewed a gravel bike he didn’t like. Which also says a few other things apart from capability. So it comes down to character and value. Some folks want value. Some want those who know, know they dropped £12k on a bike. (Although buying this £9.5k Grail in LTD colorway is just as poor a value + lower resell. It’s all relative isn’t it) All in all Crux is one of the best gravel bikes out there atm.

Not this cfr… very pricey. And the sl cheap ones don’t have the same bar nor storage spaces. That you get from 5000 euro upwards. So i am not sure about the ‘no brainer’. The canyon grizl is a great competitor with bigger tyre possibilities.

For me the Crux looks waaaay better than the Canyon IMHO. To me he bigger tyre clearance are more useful than the additional features on the Canyon. Mudguard mounts and in the frame storage are nice to have, but there's no substitute for tyre tyre clearance. The Canyon definitely wins out in value for money though.

I’d also add that one can’t have it all in one bike and if I were to simplify the spectrum of gravel bikes and your recent reviews it would be: 1. Aero to go for a couple of hours on flats TT style on mostly flat gravel - that’s Grail 2. Light weight to do more off road climbing - that’s Crux 3. Suspension for more downhill off road - that’s the bikes with front forks like Revolt X you compared to Crux not too long ago. All depends on where you live and what you want to do. Same as in MTB world. Can’t have one MTB only. Neverending N+1 never ends.

Isn't the Crux their 'cyclocross bike'? So manufacturers tried to convince us a gravel bike was 'different' from a CX bike, and now they are selling their CX bikes as gravel bikes as well? 😅 You cannot have it both ways.

Did you watch the video? The answer is in the video. But in short, yes gravel bikes are different to CX bikes so what's why Specialized made changes to move the Crux more into the gravel space whilst retaining the ability to be a CX racer

@@daryl4841Pros ride sponsored bikes. They are pros because they will win on any of these bikes. Canyon, Giant, Spesh, Walmart with top components. They are all capable of winning. All these bikes have similar top line components and carbon frames. The difference is literally half a degree in geo here and there. Which for a pro who can handle the bike matters little. You basically need the legs + handlin skills. Go invest in Zwift and ride your bike lol.
