When making hand cut dovetails there are a few chisel geometries that will make the process much easier and provide cleaner, more consistent results.

I end up making a lot of my own specialty chisels. Started because I was broke, kept doing it because I like them better. When regrinding chisels, keep an eye on the heat when you are removing a lot of material. You don't want to kill the temper. For making your own, you can pick up O-1 tool steel for pretty cheap and use a grinder to shape as needed. Harden and temper, sharpen and enjoy. Once you get a handle on things, it only takes an hour or two to make a chisel from the blank...which means you might find your chisel collection growing very fast as you decide to make task specific chisels more and more.

Good stuff, as always. For the extreme inside corner of half blinds, I find a small carving knife really useful for severing the fibres and cleaning out that last little bit. An Xacto knife would do it too.

Left hand and right hand carvers skew chisels . They are thin bodied and quick to re sharpen . Mine are old addis chisels. A good cabinetmaker saws right on the line when he has marked his pins so that saves time trimming and fitting .

Glad to see I'm not the only one who "gets by" with small chisels instead of fishtail/skew chisels for half blinds. Are the "round back" chisels actually supposed to be paring chisels, or what was their "intended" role? I'm a big fan of my Ashley Iles chisels, I have and use the bevel edge chisels.

I now understand how handy the smaller chisels can be. Thanks for the up close demo on the the half blind dovetails. Why the thin or small pins other then asthetics? Is there an advantage to smaller pins on dovetails?
@mcremona
@mcremona 9 жыл бұрын
Josh Mann Glad it was helpful, Josh! The smaller pins thing is on of those odd woodworking things. It's sort of a way to scream hand cut since routers and dovetail machines can't cut a pin that small. Funny thing about it is that it is technically structurally weaker than a joint with evenly sized pins and tails.

good stuff matt! grinding a chisel is a good idea and money saver i bet. are there different sized specialty chisels for the different angled dovetails (1:6 1:8)? idk if that made sense..lol

Joe basementwoodworking I haven't seen any one offering differing angles. Typically they are angled enough to cover the steepest dovetail angle you'll encounter. Thanks Joe!

Hey Matt, any thoughts on the Iyoroi Blue Steel Umeki-Oire Nomi chisels? Those are from the same site that the Ashley's are in. I've been waiting on the Ashley Round backs but they have been out of stock on the ones I need and they say they don't know when they'll get them. They have all the ones I want on the Iyoroi Blue Steel. Anyway, just wondering what your thoughts on those are. Can't really find a good review on them. Thanks man.
@mcremona
@mcremona 8 жыл бұрын
I've only heard good things about them. I'm not sure how thick these are but they may be thicker than the roundbacks so many they won't be able to get into as tight of areas but that might not be that big of an issue.

would cutting a bit of the corner of the dowetail to make it fit in the half blind socket with out super sharp inside corners be considered cheating? ;) it would inside the joint it'll be hidden once assembled
@mcremona
@mcremona 9 жыл бұрын
Lasse Langwadt Christensen cheating is good :) I usually chamfer the inside edges of the tail board so having perfect corners isn't really an issue.
