Since I am an almost 60 year continuous Cadilliac owner, I prefer the Brougham. However, I also a huge fan of Lincolns. The only thing I would have changed about the Lincoln is the taillights. On these types of large luxury cars I think the taillights look better if they extend beyond the trunk. The days of beautiful cars are long long gone!

Same here. I was in high school during the '80s and I always loved this body style of Lincoln and I always wanted one. I didn't like the change they did in 1990 at first, mostly because I LOVED this style above. I eventually came to love the redesign, but this one here is my favorite. I'd still love to have one. On this particular one I would prefer it to have had navy like the Cadillac, but the red is nice. If we could only have beautiful, large cars like this again. I'd give up my truck and my SUV for it!

My uncle drove his 83 Lincoln town car as a limo for 12 hours a day, then his associate would drive it 12 hours on the night shift. No rest for 6 days straight, with regular maintenance it went over a million miles and he sold it for $3500 in excellent condition

The Lincolns back then actually had better engines than the Cadillac. I believe it that it went a Million Miles! I worked for a Limo Company too and one of the cars was a not too sure of the year but probably a early 2000's Lincoln Town Car Limo! It had over 500k that's 500 thousand miles with nothing done to the engine except changing the oil the transmission though I believe was on its 3rd transmission rebuilt I believe.

On the town car, the stainless rocker trim was not an option, but was an indicator of trim levels. The signature and Cartier came with the lower stainless rocker trim while the base has only a simple chrome bottom rocker trim. So you know at the very least it is a signature or Cartier if the wide stainless rocker trim is present

Growing up in the 70s/80s in the Detroit suburbs, being the ‘company town’ it was for the Big 3- the streets were lousy with Cadillacs and Lincolns. Drive by the country clubs there and the valets would park the car brands together- looooong line of broughams loooong line of town cars- a few sevilles and Eldos, a couple of contintentals and tiny sections for jags and SL convertible Mercedes (rich wives under 60 drove those). Can’t remember seeing a BMW or an Audi!

I was always a GM car boy/teen/man but have had a Ford or two in my (cough cough) sixtyi-ish years of my life...but I have to give my vote to the Town Car here. Something about the size of it I think. Or maybe I've turned an old leaf because I currently own a TC? But both choices here are great examples of their time (and that's due to who owns them).

I love both. I’ve always wanted an 80’s Lincoln Towncar. I do believe 89 was probably the best year for the 80’s Lincoln Towncar, however several things annoy me; I never liked the rear end tail light appearance when they made the change in 85 I think and also why did they not have a digital climate control, still using the sliders. I had friends who had 91 Cadillac Brougham’s, I loved those too, they felt bigger and the classic style was still amazing. Tough choice to make now, both amazing in their own rights.
@jay241971
@jay241971 14 күн бұрын
I hear you on the climate control being digital, but to me, the more analog or pre-digital version made it feel more classic in some way. I also like the thermometer on the driver-side mirror. I think I would choose it over the digital for its appeal and nod to nostalgia and yesteryear. I also love the vent windows on these. . . I agree with you on the tail light appearance. I think they could have made a change when they did, but made them a little more classy than simply rounded and slapped-on like they tend to appear. I always wanted an '80s Town Car too. I'd've chosen about an '87-'89 most probably. I wish this one above was blue instead of red, but I don't hate the red at all. Both cars are beauties.

I was always amazed by the front vent windows on the Town Car and loved them. Wasn't Lincoln the last car to feature them? I was so intrigued that when you rolled down the window the vent window came down first then the actual window. Just too cool. I'm sure it was born out of an era when many people smoked, but, that Lincoln held onto it for so long was nostalgic and unique. Same with the thermometer on the mirror; sort of classic elegance even though there was another option by then (digital). Somehow the digital would seem to make these cars less classy. Beautiful cars both. The Lincoln is my favorite as it was during the '80s, but this Cadillac is a beauty too.

Along with those old school bodies, is the Chrysler Fifth Ave. Does not have the options as these two but for that soft ride, carburated 318, it's a classic look. Midsize compared to the two it was an option for those who did not want a super large car but opulence.

One thing that the 1989 and late 1988 Chrysler Fifth Avenue had that was unavailable in both the Cadillac and the Lincoln was a driver's side airbag. I also preferred the analog gauge cluster of the Chrysler to the digital readout on the other vehicles. The Fifth Avenue was just as comfortable as the Cadillac and the Lincoln; it's too bad that Chrysler saw fit to end production of their rear drive models after the 1989 model year. The front drive New Yorkers and Imperials were nice-looking and well-appointed, but they really weren't comparable to the Cadillac Brougham or the Lincoln Town Car.

One of the last few years that Cadillac made these out of Texas and Detroit. When they were updated, they transferred production from the Clark street plant in Detroit to Arlington Texas, where they build the Tahoes to this day. The Lincoln was assembled in Wixom Michigan until 2007...both were American made, for American customers with dying American styles.

My grandparents drove Lincolns in the 70s, 80s and 90s. My parents, on the other hand, drove Cadillacs from the 80s, 90s and 00s. I think I prefer the way the Lincolns of this era ran and sounded. Interestingly, my father, a transmission rebuilder and master mechanic always complained about not liking the way 'Ford brakes' felt. 😂 On a long haul highway drive, I think the Cadillac is nearly impossible to beat, from a comfort perspective. Also, I think the Lincoln is perhaps more technologically more advanced, but I remember the Cadillacs having automatic level ride. All-in-all, its a close one, but I think I have to roll with the Caddy. If we're talking early 60s cars, I would vote Lincoln all day.

Being a GM guy until 1986, I never owned a Cadillac. But have owned a few Lincolns. Either one of these would look good in my garage.

Love 'em both. I'm a Ford guy overall, but it's hard to beat the styling of that Cadillac. That multiport 5.0L in the Lincoln was definitely ahead of its time though. I'd be delighted to have either sittin' in my garage though.

Caddy for the win! In my old 85 Conti I loved the antenna switch, no antenna needed for CDs that were big in the later 80s.

When I see these cars, I see how beautiful the days of the eighties were, and I prefer the Cadillac because it was with my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law, and it was the height of luxury and beauty, and the Lincoln was also wonderful.

Both are stunning examples! Love both Cadillac and Lincoln. In my younger days, I had a Silver 89 Lincoln Mark VII LSC w/ factory sunroof. Born in the early 80’s I’ve grew up with these cars and always loved the big bodied Caddy’s and Lincoln’s. One day there’ll be a Gold 79 Trans Am 400 WS6 4 speed w/ T-Tops, a Black 92 Mark VII LSC Special Edition, a White w/ Blue Cloth Top 89 Lincoln Town Car, and a White w/ Blue Cloth Top 92 Cadillac Brougham DeElegance (all w/ factory sunroof) sitting in a garage, that I would still have to build, for them. One day. 😂

So beautiful! My choice would be the 1989 Town Car but I LOVE both just because I'm a Town Car guy ! These cars are so comfortable and make you feel like a million bucks driving them! LOVE LOVE LOVE those hoods with the hood ornaments! I always said that I feel like the President driving my Town cars down the road! That hood!!!!!! AND you can steer it with one finger! Just an amazing automobile! By the way, your right side cornering light doesn't work on the Town Car!

I went to the general motors training center in Burbank where I learned that the Brougham has the same running gear as a chevy pick up. They are very sturdy cars.

My first car was a handmidown 82 LeSabre estate wagon with that Olds 307. I remember that engine being a real dog, but that was also pulling the huge wagon. Still, no rocket!

Just a tip: you can read the water temperature in rhmmthe Caddy on the climate control display. Depress simultaneously two pushes (i do not remember which ones, off and max warm i think), then you enter the diag mode and you can choose to display engine temp in Celsius.
