Mark's Backyard Birds

Күн бұрын

Red-shouldered Hawks have become increasingly common over much of their range. Traditionally a hawk of the southern swamps, these predators are adapting to urban areas throughout their range thus becoming more familiar to people who feed birds.
Mark McKellar is a wildlife biologist with over 35 years of bird study experience. He has a degree in Fish and Wildlife Sciences from North Carolina State University and has worked for the Department of the Army, the Wildlife Departments of North Carolina and Missouri. He ran nature centers for many years in Missouri and Pennsylvania before buying the Backyard Bird Center in the Northland area of Kansas City. Mark has led hundreds of bird hikes both locally and abroad. He has taught classes about birds and other wildlife to groups of all ages and brings that knowledge to the customers of his retail business every day. I have the Merlin Bird ID app … that’s how I found out what type of hawk it is.. I can go outside with my coffee in the morning and push record and it will show me all of the birds that are close by so I can start looking for them .. I’ve had a blue grosbeak ‘s and a few others that say rare for this time of year … I know they come to my area because I have a water fountain birdbath … adding water a few years ago was the game changer to get birds to my yard … thanks for all the wonderful videos ❤

Good evening Mark, Hear them everyday. We have a creek next door. About a quarter mile down, the beavers have turned the area into a swamp. These guys keep the local snakes and field mice in check. Amazing to watch them in action.

I will be watching more of your videos❤. I love my red shouldered hawks. A pair nest in my Chinese Elm tree right in our neighborhood every year. We love them because they clear out rodents from the neighborhood. We have a desert climate, so they have adapted to living in areas with lots of big trees here in Bakersfield CA. Their call is very distinctive and much different from the larger red tailed hawks which love to feast on pesky pigeons. The big Golden eagle has tried to take out one the the red tailed hawks, but she had a lucky escape!❤

Thank you for the info! We live on a big grain farm in east central Illinois. Lots of trees around our farmstead but otherwise mostly wide open fields. Red-tails, Coopers and kestrels are common but this morning was the first time I've heard that distinctive Red Shoulder call! So cool.

I always have to do a double take to check if the call is coming from a Blue Jay. They are excellent mimics of several birds including the RS :)

Great video… The red shouldered hawk has been in my backyard multiple times a day for the past few weeks landing in the oak trees above the birdfeeder and birdbath … the chickadees and a couple of crows alert me very loudly so I know to come out and start looking… i’m in Louisiana, so very swampy around our neighborhoods …

red-shouldered hawks are very vocal which makes them relatively easy to identify. Much more than the coopers and sharpies. Most of the coopers I hear are just blue jays mimicking them to scare off the gray squirrels from the feeders. especially when I put out peanuts in shells. 🥜

Thank you for this video! Today I received my tray feeder with dove guard looking forward to putting it out. Do you sell a cover to go on top, so dove can't poop on the seeds? If not maybe I can get a piece of plexiglass. Enjoy your videos. Maybe a thumbnail for tray feeders.

Will the red shouldered chase off and prey on the ruby throated hummingbirds? I believe I had one of the hawks on top of a 6' fence and was not afraid of me walking towards it within 20ft!
@MarksBackyardBirds
@MarksBackyardBirds Жыл бұрын
Hummingbirds are far too small of a target for a hawk to pursue. Plus they can easily out maneuver them.

Mark, I’m happy to be here but I’ve got a hawk issue. There are easily 2 pretty large ones and 2 smaller ones which I think are their fledglings? They are probably too tolerant of people, this hawk looked like it wanted to fight me when I was trying to figure out if he had grabbed one of the tiny ducklings. Which I’m trying to prevent but the people I’m the area are feeding them on land and they don’t have a healthy fear of humans and it’s giving me a lot of anxiety 😞 mark please help they’re chasing my corvids and I’ve been feeding the corvids but I don’t want to put them in danger of the hawks are hunting them or following them because of it? Do you have an email or another social platform I can submit questions and videos? 😞

They WILL take chickens. Just lettin y’all know. I’ve seen them kill a couple of mine last year. Haggard pairs WILL work together as well, one would distract my rooster while the other attacked and killed a hen.

I always try to make sure when I say certain raptors don’t go after birds, I remind folks that chickens don’t behave like most other birds. Unfortunately, they are pretty easy targets for birds of prey.

@@MarksBackyardBirds oh i 100% knew what you meant. This was for folks like me that learned the hard way (though it was really cool to see not gunna lie) that they’ll take chickens in spite of the the size difference.

I live in Temecula CA (southern CA) and I recently saw a hawk and I thought it was a juvenile red tail hawk. It was so beautiful. I started doing research and found the red shouldered hawk. The call that I started hearing gave it away. It is still around and I love hearing it and looking for it. The other day there were 3 of them. They were so loud and such an amazing sight. I thought the one had found a mate. One flew off and the other 2 ended up on the same branch in a tree above me. However, I think there may have been a mated pair passing through because I am back to seeing only one of them. I am not quite sure where the wetlands are as we are pretty dry here. There are a few small lakes, but not super close to here. We do have some tall trees in my area. We always see red tail hawks, but this hawk is so beautiful and so loud. I love it. I hope it sticks around and finds a mate.
