Speckled Trout Locate- Tips & Advice

In this episode we are in Eastern NC. It's January and we are hunting speckled trout. I've got a good angler with me today and pretty soon we are able to locate fish and catch a fair amount. Thanks for watching.

I have really enjoyed watching a bunch of your trout videos since I found them a week or so ago. Grew up in Greensboro and hunted Bodie Island and Mattamuskeet but never knew about the coastal fishing in NC. I now live in the Charleston SC area and for the last 15 or so years, have been fishing almost exclusively for trout using artificials (Z-man) and custom rods that I built. The fall fishing has always been good, lot of 70-80 days, but the winter fishing has not been good for me. Always learning, I have some new ideas now thanks to you and these very well made videos. Coastal North Carolina is a beautiful place seen thru these videos.........well done and Thanks!

Thanks Robbie. We do have a special place here in Eastern NC, but you do also down there. I also have spent time hunting Bodie Island and mattamuskeet. These days I just feel more rewarded when chasing fish. Glad your enjoying the channel, great to hear from you!

Good show guys! Personally I have been using that same snap hook, it's not a swivel, but a simple quick snap so you can quickly change lures. Anyway, been using that with huge success for about 10 years now. I used to tie every Mirrolure with a loop knot or any hard bait until I discovered these Quick Lock Snaps. Game changer in my opinion. Sneads Ferry Fisherman here. My trout fever is starting to set in here in early October. Tight Lines gents!

Definitely swiping this time of year. I have them do the same thing when go after popping cork rigs and hard baits. Awesome channel!

Even when I catch fish I’m still not sure I understand “why” they were at that spot vs any other spot. Great videos. Feels like I’m out there with y’all.

Thanks for the comment. Winter trout are looking for two things, warmth and food. If you find the fish you more than likely found one of those two elements. And I agree, sometimes it can look just like the last spot but it has fish.

thats my house in the background. I saw you that day at the end of the video putting them back in the water and I was wondering what yall were doing. Nice to see the fish biting. I have had the same problem with the soft plastics lately. Gonna have to go throw some mirrowlures.

The species I can't pattern down there is black drum. Knowing how much they like bridges, I wonder if that bridge in Bath holds any. Anyhow, another great video from my favorite saltwater fishery.

I bet the black drum get in there sometimes. They are definitely around the high rise bridge in hobucken and the breakwater at Belhaven, so why not bath?

Yes. There's black drum there, but its hit and miss til it gets cooler.

Snap swivels are the way to go! Make it super easy and quick to change out!

The snaps are the way to go. I use em on all my trout rods now. It's really not making much difference in the bites.

There's a reason why most people who put up videos don't tell the exact location where they are fishing. Especially in small bodies of water.

I trout fish the bridge in bath a couple times a week when the trout are thick and I can tell you, there's no respect down there. Several times last fall/winter, we had boats well withing my casting distance and had to go to short casting just to keep a bait in the water. It's an awesome creek to fish. Caught a 6.5 last weekend and looking for bigger ones to start showing up.

I experienced the same thing in New Bern last week. Guy sees me catch one fish and immediately motors over and starts casting on top of me! Rude. Glad my dad raised me better than that. Sometimes the worst part about fishing is other fishermen. Oh well.

Went for a few hours today and lost a couple big ol trout. One hit a free lined pinfish and the other hit a zman trout trick. They've been the hot bait for me the last couple weeks

Any tips on how you actually found the trout? I've fished a lot of the of the Pamlico, never in Bath Creek though. Great video!

Good question. I'm going to elaborate more on this topic in future videos. On this trip we were basically hitting spots where we've found them before. In most large creeks like Bath creek, all the smaller creek mouths are a good place to try, especially those that have deeper water. Take ten cast with one bait and ten with another then move on, the fish are somewhere, you just have to locate them

What is your favorite ramp to put over in between Washington and Swan quarter

Tough question, alot of the ramps I/we (anglers in general) use aren't too fancy but they get the job done based on where the fishing is good. Belhaven and swanquarter both have very nice State Built ramps with adequate parking. Dinah's landing at Goose Creek is nice also.

Would you share what rod you're using with the Mirrodines? Length, action, etc.?

Randy, the rod I'm loving right now for mirro lures is a Fenwick /HMX medium light-fast 6-12lb. And this is a good question because I can't stress how important it is to have a quality rod with a super sensitive tip when fishing mirro lures. If you want to really feel the thump that makes your heart jump, go with a quality set up for mirros.

How deep are you fishing for them?

Anywhere from 3-8 ft. When it's cold they'll hang deeper but move towards shallow as daytime temps rise

More important than depth is to look for bait.
