Having watched Live Aid many many times, what many people won't pick up on is that Thomas Dolby has edited out the bit where Bowie introduces him as "the very brilliant" Thomas Dolby. seems Mr Dolby is a class act.

I watched Live Aid many times as well and noticed that too. Both were modest, classy & made great music.

I worked in Thomas Dolby's pokey little flat in Fulham in the 1980s, when I first arrived at the flat he wasn't there but there was a wall full of gold and silver albums, I had no idea who he was and to be honest never heard his music. I got know him quite well by the end of the job, he told me he was thinking of having a grand piano in the bedroom with a mattress on top of it but realised that certain activities on the bed would knock the piano out tune, we had a good giggle at that. I asked how the music business was, he just smiled and said, same as the building trade, do the job and get paid! He wanted us to be in a video for a song he was doing as clones of him, we politely declined. I met his parents, who were really nice folk, he had a stable door for a back door and steps down into a back yard, a nice touch. I'd forgotten all about that job until now. Thomas, if you read this, I hope the electric grid you have on the living room wall didn't electrocute anyone, also I ,met Dean Garcia and his girlfrend in Crete, they booked a last minute holiday and had the balcony room next to mine and he told me they had visited the your flat. he saw the electrical thing and said you had deck chairs in the living room, no sofas for you then! Dean had been working with the Eurythmics and played me some great studio jams with them, small world ain't it. Shit, that was 1983!

Bowie also lent some class to the 70s, 90s, and after the millennium. Darkstar was a fitting send off. An appropriate way to say goodbye. The most enjoyable Last Words I've ever heard.
@rainwater8135
@rainwater8135 3 жыл бұрын
After Low Bowie went downhill greatly, coinciding with his cure from drug addiction. He lost something, became derivative, copied others. Rehashed old songs that he’d given away to Iggy Pop. He himself called the 80s his Phil Collins years. After Low he came out with one decent song, Heroes. They that was it. The man who made Diamond Dogs almost single handed ( the best album ever) made that dancing in the street video with Mavis Jagger. It just doesn’t fit. Wasn’t the same person
@dionmcgee5610
@dionmcgee5610 3 жыл бұрын
@@rainwater8135 A considerably more depressing POV than the one I prefer. Not that I necessarily disagree with your assessment. While I intellectually can see where you're coming from and how you could feel that way- I've chosen a more expansive appreciation of music. I might agree that Bowie's greatest work came to it's apex on Low,(or Aladdin Sane or Station to Station) and Heroes was him on the downward slope- still, what an incredible downward slope. Sons of the Silent Age, Dj, Look Back in Anger,Ashes to Ashes, This is not America, it's no Game, Under the God, Amlapura, Shopping for Girls, Hallo Spaceboy, Thru these architects eyes, Looking for Water, Love is Lost. His plummet to earth sounded better than most musicians entire careers, in my not particularly humble opinion. It IS all opinion, of course. It's difficult to tell someone how they feel about music is wrong (unless they say the best band ever is Milli Vanilli). Perhaps I should rephrase that. It's EASY to tell someone how they feel about music is wrong- but it's impossible to say that without at least a fragment of your consciousness realizing there is no ultimate arbiter of taste. It is fundamentally about individuality and the peculiarities that lead us to like the things we like, no matter how repellent that taste may be to other people.
