Some more speed puzzling practice for you this week! I have an online speed puzzling competition this week, hosted by the UK Jigsaw Puzzle Association, and I want to get plenty of practice in for that - I know it will be a 500 piece Ravensburger puzzle, but I don’t know which one it is, so I’m trying a variety and experimenting with a method that is usually well out of my comfort zone - the full flip. As well as doing some different things with the edge pieces, such as building them first, building them last, and somewhere in the middle! I hope you enjoy my puzzles and my analysis of how I did. Stay tuned until the end for a very nice piece of news also!

Congrats on breaking the 1 hour mark! I’m only very new to speed puzzling but for me the method usually depends on the image. For example, the one with the lightening sky I probably wouldn’t have worried about separating the edge, since it blends in so seamlessly with the rest of the image. For busier images I prefer to separate and often construct the edge first, so that I’ve got a bit of a frame/reference to work within and figure out where things go. Usually I imagine the puzzle will be larger than it is so the edge helps me see the boundaries and connect puzzle islands more easily!

Oh gosh yes! I do the same thing, I imagine the puzzle is larger - the edge is good for getting my head around that definitely. I agree that the method should be pretty image dependent as well - problem I have now is making the right decision for the image quickly 😆

hi vicky. have you thought about just practicing flipping all the pieces of a 500 pc puzzle so the muscle memory in your fingers gets better and your technique could possibly speed you up. just a thought. good luck tomorrow.

Yes, I think that’s a good idea 👍 the more I full flip the better I’ll get I’m sure. I’ll need to start marking the times it takes me to flip the pieces so I can gauge improvement over time 😍

I’m getting better, but started out so slow and am progressing so slowly that after a year I hope to reach other people’s first go. Idk why I’m so bad at it! 😂
@Vickymakesandbuilds
@Vickymakesandbuilds Ай бұрын
That’s great you’re seeing progress. I don’t see it so much as being ‘bad’ at it - up until last year there has been no reason for me to focus on speed when I puzzle, so it’s just not something I ever practiced or thought about. I feel like speed puzzling is like relearning a whole new skill. Keep practicing and you’ll get better - hopefully I will too! 😍

For me, I prefer the full flip method, because it feels faster. As in, I don't need to think "oh, that goes into red pile, that's a blue, no, wait, it's a different kind of blue, now that one is blue, where was that pile" etc. I don't need to be making decisions, I can just flip. And then overall I feel it's effective for me to have everything in view as much as I can, so that then pieces can start jumping out me. Now, with puzzles like what I call rainbow objects or Blue Car, sorting feels doable, cause it's very distinctive of what colour/section is what, and everything is easily distinguished. But for example, with zebras, while you would have zebras as very easy visual distinction, the rest need more thinking, so for that I may just prefer full flip, so that I don't have to think at all.
@Vickymakesandbuilds
@Vickymakesandbuilds Ай бұрын
I know exactly what you mean. I have found that sorting can be too slow a process when speed puzzling too, I think that just takes practice to make the rapid-fire decisions required! I will try the zebra one again using full flip - maybe give it a wee while so I’m not too familiar with the puzzle from the first time around. 😍

@@Vickymakesandbuilds I should probably try to practice with some more sorting, but somehow with 500 piece size, just flipping feels to be faster. I somehow feel pressured to sort cause that's what most people are doing, but at the same time, Alejandro doesn't, so :D Another thing I've been also thinking about trying is not separating edges, like you said. Really curious about that one, so would love to see your conclusions regarding it too.

It just goes to show that using different methods can produce different times. It's a case of looking at the image and deciding which method is going to work best. Not always easy to judge that. Putting pieces in the box and then out again takes up time, use some small pieces of foam board or similar. It can be a bit of a toss up as to whether you sort or just get on with it. I'm currently crossing my eyes with a randomish cut Cloudberries called Lotus. For me, slow going, but I'll get there in the end. Look forward to hearing how you got on with your online competition. Good luck with that.

Thank you for the luck. Whatever happens I think it will be fun! 🤩 I agree with you about using foam board or trays, someone else suggested that too - it’s a better idea. Good luck with your lotus puzzle, I’ve not tried a puzzle by Cloudberries that is “random-ish” cut! 😃

I think your quicker results, are due to you using both hands. If you watch Alejandro, I am sure he is ambidextrous, and therefore his speed is quicker. Best of luck on Easter Sunday 🐣 👍 😀
@Vickymakesandbuilds
@Vickymakesandbuilds Ай бұрын
Good point! That’s actually something I hadn’t thought of - I mean, I know using both hands can be quicker, but learning to use both more often instead of having a dominant hand could be a good exercise, and I can see how being ambidextrous could be extremely advantageous!! I need to take a closer look at his puzzling, the only thing I don’t think I can do that he does is hunch over the puzzle the entire time, that would seriously hurt my back 😬

Re putting the pieces into the box then dumping them out - have you thought about using a sorting tray? When flipping (or sorting) you could put the pieces directly onto the tray, then either use them directly from the tray or slide them off onto the board. Solves the "get them out of the way" without having to handle them twice. I think you should try building the edge while you are building the different sections of the puzzle. I like building off of something, so the edge is just one more thing to build off of. I of course know nothing, so you should ignore all this and do whatever is comfortable for you. 😂 Another interesting video, always love your content.❤
@Vickymakesandbuilds
@Vickymakesandbuilds Ай бұрын
Actually a sorting tray is a great idea and way more practical than using the box, plus people are allowed to use trays or boards at competitions. I don’t really know why I don’t utilise those perks. I agree about the edges, that’s actually what I did in that very last time lapse where I did the blue car again, that’s my best time yet! Ha ha! I certainly won’t ignore it, I think you’ve made some good suggestions there definitely 😁 Thank you as always for your support x

How would you feel attempting the hard bit first? Would getting the zebras or grass out of the way at the beginning when you are at your least tired, make a difference?
@Vickymakesandbuilds
@Vickymakesandbuilds Ай бұрын
That is something I thought of afterwards too. I just wasn’t sure if doing the harder parts first would make them even harder because there is no framework to put them in, if you see what I mean, but then again, as you say, I’m less tired at the start so it could be that they will go together better at the beginning. I can only give it a try and see what happens! Thank you for the suggestion 😍

What's the large puzzle on your table in this video? It doesn't look like Magical Dragon Forest or Wildlife! Is there a third one going? About your problem with slowing down at difficult parts with speed puzzling - I wonder if Kristen Thuv from the WJPC had a right idea two years ago? The year she puzzled with one hand while leaning on the other but came in second. Maybe try to relax a little more?

The puzzle on the table is Bizarre Town - 5k. I have popped photos of it up on my community tab if you want to have a quick look 😊 I’m collaborating with Donnalouise on this puzzle - she received it as a gift around about the same time I did, so we’re doing it at the same time and releasing back to back premieres 😍 I agree I should relax more, and sometimes I do find myself lapsing into one handed puzzling - problem is then, when I catch myself doing it, I start to feel paranoid that it’s slowing me down. Maybe some calming mind exercises would help me to fix that tendency to internally panic 😆
Big puzzle haul!
