Revisiting the Speed Triple that I liked so much 6 months ago when I owned a Trident 660. But now that I ride a Speed Twin, do I still yearn for this 1200 RS?

Having ridden a Street triple RS, then a Speed twin, I absolutely loved the Speed in the city, that addictive torque and ease of use, as well as that super compact feeling nature had me fall in love with the bike and question whether I ever liked the Street (it was my dream bike till I rode the speed twin). With that I completely forgot about both bikes and went about my merry way, till I recently had a Triumph salesman telling me I should try the Speed Triple and it would make up for that missing torque I felt in the street; Tossing me the key-fob and with my friend on the new Street RS we went for a ride in a city I had never been to, My god have my opinions changed, I absolutely fell in love with the Speed Triple, I remember finding some empty stretches and struggling and crying to keep the front end down as I opened the throttle, no one needs this much power, especially in a naked bike; but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want it. With both the Street and Speed triple RS at full throttle, I had to let off as I was afraid I'd scare my friend by passing him too fast, I never thought I'd see such a difference between a middleweight and superbike levels of performance; The handling and braking was to die for as well. I know the Speed Twin makes more sense, and in India it is drastically cheaper than the 1200 RS, But if I had the money, I think I'd still go for the Triple, But who knows, maybe in a few year of riding my cafe racer my back and wrists will persuade me to choose the Speed twin over the others. Loved your video on the two and I enjoy your content! Ride Safe!:)

Sweet video. Honest assessment of two great machines. Just brought my new Speed Twin in the house today from my minivan! Unloaded it myself. The balance and ergonomics of it are amazing considering the fairly hefty weight. When I first sat on it at the dealer I knew it was coming home with me. To each his own, but the Speed Twins the one for me!

You did a great job in comparing the uncompareable. I got a grin on my face as you mentioned that the sound of your Speed Twin reminds you of the boomy burble sound of a V 8. Well, technically it sounds with its 270 ° crank quite exactly like a 90 ° V twin, as it is mimicing its firing order. So, welcome in the club of the Ducati, Moto Guzzi and Suzuki V 2 sound experience.

Thank you so much for this!! I have had 4 Speed Triples, since 2005, now have a R from 2018. I can honestly say the current version is my least favourite. Triumph has moved away from the ethos of the Speed Triple and is chasing the Tuonos , which means the new RS is even less of the friendly British beef that the originals were, with lots of torque and mega fun in real life. I used mine well, touring and even took it to the Nurburgring, always laughing. The current one has been a challenge to get on with, specially leaving in Portugal like I do now and negotiation cobble streets and bad pavement. When I do find a good road and can ride over 150 kmsh, then it comes alive and is mega!! But that is not advisable nor practical. With great sadness Im thinking of changing and the Speed Twin looks good. I had the Scrambler 1200 XE for 2 days and loved it, so much I was ready to give up on my right leg due to the heat from the pipes!! Still not sure I can let go of the need for speed, but I need to crash to earth and accept the Speed Triple now has a very narrow operating band... thanks again, i ll book a test ride of the speed twin!!! Will let you know when im down in the Algarve, maybe a coffee at triumph? Cheers

I have just acquired a 22 Speed twin,so enjoyed your honest and balanced review. I have had many bikes over my 55 yrs of biking and feel sure the STwin will not disappoint. As you point out, it depends on so many factors, but unlike most other reviews you consider the rider`s needs as well as the bike itself and at 76 yrs of age and doing mainly rides of no more than 250 miles in the UK I agree the ST is better to own than the tripple. I love the speed and all the tech features, but I also love the retro look on the speed twin 😢. Thank you for an enjoyable comparison between these desirable bikes. I like your reference to diesel v petrol performance which makes so much sense. Torque is king in my view, especially on these camera strewn UK roads! I wish more reviewers would show comparison charts, I find them useful in tracking the relative virtues of different bikes. For example I'm no fan of the BMW 1200GS but they sell like hot cakes so it's good to see its relative scoring against the RS and others. I'm trying to fathom what it is that I'm not appreciating.

Another superb comparison RM! Enjoyed hearing your thoughts on both these babies or beasts 😊as per a person’s perspective. What you said about age being the predominant factor in a choice between the two is the most accurate assessment ever. A twenty/thirty something person is not going to possibly choose the Twin over the Triple. They might call the Twin an “uncle” bike and on the other hand the Triple in the hands of the those above 55 might be called “trying to relive his youth” 😂😂😂 Actually the person who spends the moolah is always right 💪 for himself/herself. What a great review ! I’m now 54 and have a 2018 Speed Triple RS and a Kawasaki 1000sx …. I love the Speedy BUT have this year been seriously considering WHY I own it rather than the new Speed Twin …. And your review hits the nail on the head …. I’m leaning very much towards swapping for the Speed Twin as a more “sensible” or should I say rounded bike for me … great example is my 10 mile ride to work … the Speedy will do it , but it always feels pi55ed off with me that we’re not doing it faster ! Whereas the Speed Twin seems happy to burble its way through the commuting traffic and you arrive a bit more relaxed I feel ! Thanks again for a great review 👍🏻

I find myself agreeing with your observations on age and what bike we should get. When I was in my late 20's I had a cafe RD 350 Yamaha that was built by me to be as close to a race bike as I could get it. It was the most fun bike I ever owned, period! I have owned faster bikes, 73 Kawasaki Z1, 84 Kawasaki Ninja - first year for it, but for pure adrenaline rush, the sounds and handling of that RD was IT! Now at 73 my style is like yours, low end torque to get the bike moving, just not at high speeds over 85. My 97 1100 virago handles that task very well, but over 80 it gets uncomfortable. That's OK as I spend no time at those speeds any more. Please keep your reviews coming as the are very informative.

I guess aesthetics are very much subjective and to each their own. I find the new speed triple to be absolutely gorgeous and I adore the twin headlight design triumph use on their sport naked. The headlight design was one of the major reasons I bought my 2017 Street Triple RS. On the other hand, as much as I appreciate the classic looks of the speed twin, I don't find it overly enticing compared to all the other Bonneville variants. I'm sure both are great bikes but even just for the looks I'm going with the triple.

Hello rocket man. I have some questions for you if you can assist. I have the trident identical to the one you had. After 9 months I love the bike but find that I need a bit more. In quality in power etc. so I’ve test ridden a striple r and loved it but. I found my self doing 70-80kms in town easily and I didn’t want to go that fast. It seems the bike wants to go fast. Was that me or is the bike build that way? Also after a 1 hour and a half of ridding my knees where somewhat hurting. Just a bit but enough to make have second thoughts. Anyway since you got the speed twin (which I love) is the twin a good balance of power sports riding and relaxed riding at the same time?
@RocketMan_Moto
@RocketMan_Moto 2 жыл бұрын
I had a Street Triple RS back in 2017. I loved it, but just as you describe, I found myself riding everywhere 'at 200kph'. It became irritating, so I tried the Trident, which was great, but I missed the power. The Speed Twin for me is the best compromise: it's got the power and torque, but it's a 'lazy' engine, that doesn't like to be revved. You can go fast if you want, but it's not pushing you constantly to break the speed limit. As for the Speed Triple, that is completely mental, and you find yourself going everywhere at 300kph, lol. Hope this helps :)

Always a pleasure to watch your thoughts on Triumphs RocketMan. I know that is no longer sold new but I think the Speed Triple 1050RS is a better match for the Speed Twin. The engine spins much slower than the 1200RS so the acceleration is less brutal. It's heavier so less agile to turn. The brakes aren't as sharp. The suspension is softer. Still very fast and sporty but everything happens slower when compared to the 1200RS. A gentleman roadster. A very underrated motorcycle. The 1200RS is better in every way but which one is the better road bike? I think it is the 1050RS. Like I said in another of your videos the experience of the Speed Triple and Speed Twin should be sufficiently different to justify owning both. I have to choose? Never experienced a twin engine that can hold a candle to a triple :)

Excellent explanations! Almost bought a Speed Twin (the first model) except for three negative reasons: Seat started to hurt after an hour of riding (normally three hours on my 2012 V-Strom 650), a bit too much engine heat on a hot summers day in Sydney (34°C) and the deal breaker of squeaking brakes. I always look forward to your reviews and comparisons. I have not ridden a Speed Twin, yet. Last summer I rode the new Speed 1200 RS and although undeniably a faster and lighter bike than the previous 1050 RS it seemed to have lost some of the character of the previous bike. So despite being down on power and a little heavier, I think the 1050 RS is the better bike for the road. Plus imho it looks better with the high level twin Arrow cans. I bought one yesterday. I had set my heart on a new Speedmaster 1200 in 2022, but the Speed Triple 1050 RS came up that was a good deal with only 1k on the clock and a full Triumph warranty. Sold. Just wish I lived some where warm and dry like the Algarve to be able to ride pretty much 12 months of the year ............. Shall have to wait until March at the earliest. Not getting salt and crud all over it riding in crappy UK weather and equally crappy roads.

Thanks, Alex. I have been told that the 'old' Speed Twins were better road bikes. The 1200RS is a fabulous bit of engineering, but a bit mad for the public roads. A bit like driving around in a F1 car. It sounds as if you've got yourself a great deal - hope the weather allows you to enjoy it soon. If it's any consolation, the weather is very poor here all this week. Rain, thunder, dark grey clouds... I might as well be in the UK, lol :)

The 1200 RS is a much better bike than the 1050 RS. I don't know anyone who regrets to have made the jump. The gearbox ratio is a bit lower with the 1050 RS so you might have the illusion it has a bit more character between 3 and 4000 rpm. But it is not really true, and stay a gear lower with the 1200 RS and you will see what bike as more character 😉

Me thinks it is a bit steep and just to fit Oxford ones as I have done previously on other bikes. I don't ride in winter but my hands tend to feel the cold. Agree with your observations 100% on the new Speed Triple 1200 RS, so much so that the SDR 3.0 that I subsequently rode felt more suited for the road as the suspension felt more compliant and plush which is saying something!! I think Triumph dropped the ball slightly with their new 1200RS. I would be mighty pissed off if I had bought one thinking this is the top bike only for Triumph to announce another potentially better version the RR with semi-active suspension within a year. I would still prefer to be in the Algarve than here in the UK even if the weather turned bad for a few days there. The summers are so much longer warmer drier ............... so much more sunshine but then I guess you know this as it is likely why you moved there. The last few days here in the UK have been miserable. Today in Cambs it is a day of heavy grey leaden skies, misty, foggy, very cold and a strengthening easterly wind giving a biting wind chill. Storms, heavy rain or blizzards for Christmas Day and Boxing day. Lovely, not. ATB

@@alaincaspar2148 Thanks for trying to piss on my enjoyment of my new to me bike purchase. Yes I have ridden the new 1200RS. Are you a track day fan boy as this is the only place you'd be able to full exploit it's potential? I suspect it's capabilities are probably far more than the owners that ride it. I think it is wasted on the roads quite apart from the suspension being too firm for crappy UK roads. Fine on a race track.

Your last comment nailed it - must be my age - the Speed Triple especially in 1200 cc form is a naked sports bike , an Adrenalin packed mean machine , that only really come's into to its own when you hit the power/speed fine for a an occasional blast on public roads great for track days , as an all-rounder everyday machine maybe not , a Yam T9 or 10 would be easier to live with as an everyday probably , under stated power like your twin is easier to live with , like a Yam FJ 1200 back in the day bit heavy , very rideable , plenty of grunt and power when you got the revs up , but very rideable either as a cruiser or a sports bike , still is with a few suspension up-grades , maybe you found another reason why the Enfield 650 is so popular apart from being affordable ......

I recently sat on the latest Speed Triple, the 1200RR version. Like the Ducati 916 many years ago I knew my time had gone for riding such bikes. I can look and appreciate the lines, beauty even, and the technology but as for riding...in youth definitely, now....I have been riding a Street Triple 675 for the last few years here in Spain. Its still manageable, however I believe the time will not be long before I must go to the Triumph classic range where both feet are flat on the ground and a more comfy riding stance is possible...not to mention an ever decreasing desire to be a 'Hooligan.!!

I completely understand that, Brian. I had a 2017 Street Triple a few years ago, but became tired of riding everywhere 'at 100mph'. Six months on, while I continue to drool over the Triple, I know I made the right decision :)

Interesting perspective. Appreciate the review in the sense of how it feels and ride, rather than throwing numbers around. My question is: how can riders find the metal-needle pegs comfortable? Triumph even uses them on the Tiger 660, which seems out of place. To me they'd be torture devices. Most other bikes that are meant for more than just racing use comfort pegs with rubber inserts.

However, you can't use the bike's performance on the road, and I'd be too worried about binning a 17k+ bike on the track. Leaning more closely to the speed twin. With the old 120 degree crank pins and that glorious firing order. Like the old Laverda Jota's . @@chrishart8548 totally right! It is the IV 1.9 TDI 110 bhp 25 years edition, blue. :) Love it. My first car, new from the stand, 100% paid by me after countless summers at work :) . Still with me, soon to be passed on to my 16 years old daughter.

Think the triples cost a arm and a leg in the uk for a major service . £ 750 + was the figure I heard gulp. No wonder so many in dealers when three years old .

20222 Speed triple no questions, no competition. 765 looks great snd sounds great but the 765 is to narrow ( total nut murderer), snd the 765 lacks too much midrange and low end grunt in all gears snd also the speed triple is perfect st any speed now.

@@RocketMan_Moto that’s my dyslexia kicking in. I was referring to the twin and wrote triple. I started writing one message, stopped came back in to finish and screwed everything. Up. Yeah. It would be interesting to see a 765 speed twin, lol. I’ve ridden both. I got a speed twin on loan for a while when they were working on my speed triple 1200, and, knowing full well what the speed twin was, it was just always asking for more gear but I just had nothing to rev to; it was a very short Revving bike. I just would always go for something, like the street triple or speed triple 1200 rs. That’s just me. I loved the street triple but the sizing of the street vs speed triple made me go with the extra power and slightly bigger bike in the speed triple. I will say, that speed twin was a fun little bike for all around and everything. That bike got horrible gas Mileage for what it was, surprisingly, but otherwise, it was fun, I trusted it to handle ( I would have to raise the pegs but that’s very easy), it was an easy bike to filter traffic, and it was cool going back to actually using a clutch again. It had upsides. I’m not going to totally dump on the bike. Just for me, I love me some speed triple. Even being the Owner a V4s panigale, mainly because of cost and fear, I am always a little too uptight and paranoid so it is less fun to own because I’m constantly thinking “it’s going to get stolen or molested.” I don’t want any bike stolen but it just hurts a little differently when it is $36k just gone and you know the cops will never find it. Hey, thanks for the call out, lol. Sadly, I catch myself doing this kind of goofy spaced out typing thing a lot, lol. Have good one.

Haha, no problem. I had a 765 Street Triple when they came out 5 years ago - fabulous bike, but I grew tired of riding everywhere 'at 100mph'

What you said about the torque is wrong : in fact there is as much torque at 4000 rpm with the triple than with the twin (around 110). The only difference is there is so much power at higher rpm with the triple that you feel that, at 4000 rpm, it is just a bit "mild"... but it is not actually. The twin has a very good engine but just nothing to compare. I know because I sold the Thruxton 1200 RS (same engine as the Twin, even a little bit more powerful) to get the Triple. That being said the engine of the Twin is enough on normal road (but will never give you the sensation of the one of the Triple). By the way I am 64 🤪

You’re probably right, but I like to focus on feel rather than statistics, and I stand by what I said: the Triple lacks grunt low down

An along came the RR. Still prefer the RS though. Beautiful Speed TWIN gave off far too much hideous heat to buy for me though
