This run incorporates screen scrolling. To clip through a wall (screen scroll glitch), you must stand toward that wall and be a specific amount of pixels away from the wall (either 5 or 7, the amount escapes me at the moment) and then move one frame in a side direction. ~Darkwing Duck

Why is it that the majority of people who feel the need to shit on this run have clearly never played this game before? "I call bullshit, those white thingies didn't do any damage!" You're right, they DIDN'T. They DO disable your sword for a few seconds though. "Those bomb drops look awfully suspicious!" The game itself tells you that every tenth enemy you kill gives you bombs. "This video quality is ass". There was no HDMI in the 1980s...which is when this game was made. "He used GLITCHES! That's CHEATING!" It's a speed run. Part of the fun is watching gamers exploit programming oversights by the developers in order to complete the game as quickly as possible. It's not the same as using Game Genie to get infinite health--he came close to dying several times in this run, which would have been an automatic restart. Please STFU if you don't know what you're talking about.

Jelani Wilson Back in the day, before the internet, you had to play the game. There were also books and magazines you could buy that had maps and cheats. I think *Nintendo Power* magazine even had a hotline you could call for tips. Otherwise you had to examine the clues the game gives you, you had to do a lot of trial and error, and you could share tips with friends.

This was an awesome run. I can't even believe it, i remember when i was a kid about 10 years old i got this game and it took me months to finish. Then a few years older i went back at it with all the maps and it took me at least 8 hours. The way you killed those wizards without the Magic shield and killed those blue knights with a shitty armor WOW, those fuckers were for me the hardest in the game. Great great run

Great run! FYI for those who aren't familiar with speedrunning. Speed runs are competitions for completing a game the fastest. Glitches and bugs in the game are acceptable and almost always encouraged. (Any known exceptions?) If it is done with an emulator they call it a TAS (Tool Assisted Speed Run) which often lets you do things not normally possible on console games. (Not sure on the rules and stuff on TAS, anyone?) So even though he used glitches, he didn't cheat or do anything wrong. There are different categories of speed runs, usually depending on the game. Some of the most common between games is 100% or Any%. Some games have game-specific speed runs, and sometimes new categories are made and become popular by speed runners. (Look up Lunar-Dragon speed run for Super Mario World for instance which is relatively new vs. the normal 96-Exit speed runs that people normally do for the game.) Just out of curiosity is there a category of speed running where glitches aren't allowed? Also, just a fun question, what is the most interesting game and category of speed runs to you? And I guess since I wrote this much, I'll put a shameless plug here. (Hey, you read this far, right?) My boy Brandon and I recently did a let's play dual commentary video for Super Mario World. It's pretty funny (for the most part) and I'd appreciate anyone checking it out. I made a playlist of the videos or you can check out GeekModeGaming channel to find the videos. Also, tell me what game you think we should do next. I was thinking either: LoZ, LoZ:OOT, Super Mario B3, or Ninja Crusader which was one of my all-time favorite NES games as a kid. Or MAYBE MAYBE Dragon Warrior, but then I'd have to get a lot better at the game because I usually win by grinding, and that's not fun to watch.

yea. I've read some pretty in-depth articles about that glitch, and it talks about what pixels you have to be in and all that jazz, and I'm just kinda like... how do you even know? haha. I guess speedrunners have done enough pixel-specific glitches that they would. But I'm like... common, just once!

not sure i would think they have a catagory on fastest time to beat something without using glitches. but good post as many dont understand what is meant by speed run. in general the most common i believe is anything goes as long as it was part of the game. like glitches and such. and just as long as you beat the game. as you said there are percent speed runs as well. a more common example would be tony hawk skatebording games. they have 80 percent speed runs which is the basic to just beat the game. and then they have 100 percent speed runs were you much complete everything.

I love that mess up at 10:55. Those erratic bats piss everyone off, even the best of the best. Just like the blue guy at 15:30. He was scared for his balls on 20:20. I was too. Sweet Ganon finish. Bravo. Noah Hoffman would be proud (first kid to beat Zelda).

There's like a one frame time window where you can turn backwards when going off a screen and it will teleport you to the left side of the screen you're already on, rather than teleporting you to the next screen over on the left side. It is very precise.

My record for this game is around 50 minutes. With blue ring, all hearts, and lvl 7 before 6. No screen jumps. No bug jumps.

most of it is because link either takes 1 pixel step or two if you are a certain step in the walking animation. so line up to the correct position on the right step you pass the pixel for collision. and there you go, screen scroll and block clip.

Its called a ladder clip. Position link on a certain frame of the ladder. Then move one frame to the left or right. Link turns around. Then walk on up

Ok, after some extensive searching it seems no one has done a speedrun of this with 100% completion. I'm going to attempt this myself and see what I come up with but I'd be interested in knowing/seeing what you all come up with. No save states, just a straight playthrough.

The reason is 100% is hard to define in this game. All hearts and items, but does one have to finish with the bait and magic potions? Or if just getting the letter good enough since its required to buy the potions. So you would have to buy the bait again. Which takes some grinding unless one uses save states for the gambling game. Its not really a category. Most runs in this game fall under the any% category. Darkwing does an amazing 5 heart run. Look that up. Its quite insane.

Well I would say all hearts and items at least once, no reason to have bait when you only need it to get by the one Moblin. I would say one red potion and at least one big shield, doesn't matter if eaten. Otherwise you're talking max. number of bombs, rupees. etc. when you beat the game and that's too much farming. I have seen Darkwing's run, I would also include however, no cliches. I have done a "100%" run in about 65 mins.

this run helped alot with my level 9 but curious about 1 thing...after level8 you warp to level 1 this should put both counters down to zero. 0 on the consecutive kills and 0 on the global counter. from there he kills the red octo from outside level 1, then another blue one on the screen to the right. from there he climbs death mountain and reaches spectacle rock. he kills 2 blue landmolas which would put his global to 4 then he kills a blue lynel and gets a global bomb drop from him.?? but the global drop is on 1, 6, and 8 so how did the lynel drop a bomb? can someone explain what im missing as i cant work it out. his global would be 5 at that kill. not 6 im not judging darkwings knowledge or skill in anyway. im judging own

stiggy no, but the game numbers the sword, magical sword is 3, and white is two. The game will keeps the higest number item. So it will be there, but picking it up wont do anything

You have to use them to kill Ganon. You can't see it because he executed him at point blank range with the arrow after stabbing him--but if you listen closely you can hear the sound of the arrow being fired :)

im 14. This game I respect the graphics and everything. But this game looks hard as hell. I tried it online and gave up. First of all there is barely a map and no one gives you directions. The only ray of sunshine or good thing about this game is the man in the beginning who gives you a sword. but besides that how tha hell do you know what to do.

he was hit previously just before and was using ehat gsmes call invincibility frames where you are invulnerable fir a second or so depending on the game you can use the invincibility frames to pass through enemies

so the screen loads the next screen data 4 pixles away from the edge. so standing on the 5th you can take a 2 pixel step, so you pass the line that loads the next screen. the because link keeps moving the NES hardwear limitations auto wraps him to the zero position. and you keep moving which then loads the data for the new screen.

the first zelda is so much dark souls. i mean dark souls is now more like zelda like the zelda titles today ^^

How long does it take to beat without screen scroll?

I beat it in 45:24 w/o screen scroll...but i think the best is around 38 min

Glitching is not cheating. If the code exists in the game then you are free to use or manipulate it as you want. Only once you introduce code from outside the original does it become cheating. As a side note, i personally find glitching impressive. Some of these tricks are frame-perfect and not easy feats.
