1.2 millions watch sold every year, it is hard to put all the Rolex owner in the same basket, but I can understand and I hate see people speaking about prices when they talk about their watches. A real watch enthusiast will not mention it and will barely reply if you ask. A friend had a MB&F and showed it to me, before I was into watch, I said, it looks fun, it is too big for me and I would be afraid the break the dome. He could have told me so many thing about the watch and especially the price to shut my mouth, he just said, I like it, it is cool for me.

RE: colorway, the term is out of the design industry in general, and (to me) is an appropriate use in watch design as well. And, it's easier to say than "color palette", so it seems appropriate to use when a line comes in different "color combinations"

On the water resistance thing, I wore an Oris F1 nearly everyday for abut 5 years. I swam in it , sauna, hot tub, showered , tennis, some golf, gym, I never took it off. Than someone told me that im destroying the watch. I eventually sent to Oris for a service fearing I damaged it. It ended up being a basic service. The watch was only 50M water resistance, and $6-700 back ion 2004.

Silicone and rubber o-rings can easily handle temperatures that your body can handle without noticeable degradation... You'd have to boil the watch to start having an appreciable effect, and if it's on your wrist at that point, you have far bigger things to worry about. Why people don't recommend having a watch in a hot and humid environment is because of tolerances that manufacturers use when making the watch and it can happen that the o-ring does not expand nearly as much as the metal, hence sporting a leak. You really don't need to worry about it on a well-made watch, but take a Pagani or the likes to a sauna/hot-bath and you'll probably witness what happens when one exceeds WR rating on a watch.
@patrickjean-philippe7679
@patrickjean-philippe7679 10 ай бұрын
Not at all ! Before to write such a thing did you care checking the watches seals materials and research their properties on the internet ? My guess is no. Watches seals are either made of Buna-N or Viton. Both resist the temperatures experienced in a sauna, hot tub, etc… Now, with time these seals get plastically deformed from compression. At that point a leak path may develop and allow water / humidity ingress irrespective of wether it’s hot, warm or cold. The smear of silicon grease applied to these seals may deteriorate too… The consensus is to get your watch waterproofness checked regularly with once a year as a minimum.

From ChatGPT: Colorway is a term used to describe the color scheme of a watch. It refers to the combination of colors used on the watch face, hands, and other parts of the watch. The colorway can be used to create a unique look for a watch and can be used to differentiate one watch from another. For example, some watches have a black and white colorway while others have a blue and silver colorway. If you don’t use “colorway”, then you have to say “color scheme”. Is that better? I don’t understand people’s problem with “colorway”, it’s a real term and applies to how you use it. Just ignore those comments.

I think you will only become more and more pleased over time. I wanted a 3871 when they first came out but couldn't find one so I bought one of the last 1861 but flipped it after about 6 months. I bimbled on with watches buying some and selling some, then decided I had had enough of the watch churn and wanted to sell everything and buy my exit watch, which would be a 3861. Although very similar it is a completely different watch to the 1861, it feels more durable, the case certainly marks a lot less. This will sound like bullshit but I swear is true. I set the watch when I bought it on 6th Feb '23, six months later it is still within 1 second and has not been adjusted. Speaking to people at my local AD this is not unheard of for watches worn every day. It is a truly incredible watch.

The standard for the US Navy in terms of water resistance is that your equipment should be rated to twice the working pressure of your dive. As you point out, Teddy, 100 meters is pretty deep. My deepest dive was 142 feet exploring a wreck. Most of my recreational dives were 40 to 80 feet. Today, a watch rated to 30 or 50 meters is more than enough for me.

Water Resistance: For me, if it's rated for 50m or more, it's all good: I scarcely swim, let alone dive. "Colorway": I've only heard the term used in the last five years or so; industry shorthand, no big deal. Brand Ambassadors: I understand why they exist. No harm, no foul, couldn't care less. Ti vs stainless: If a watch I *really* like is in Ti, so be it. Otherwise, steel does it for me. Speedy vs Daytona: Had a Speedy in my distant past. Would choose it over a Daytona in a heartbeat. Keep up the great work here, Teddy.

I think part of the reason i value water resistance is because I view it as an indicator of overall durability. That a watch with a 100m water resistance is more likely not to break when you trip and slam your wrist against the concrete sidwalk than a splash resistant watch. There is also the ambiguity of water resistance, where ok, you're not supposed to wear a watch in the shower, but like if I enjoy cooking every day and a lot of the time, i'm running things over water, my watch is getting steamed a little on my wrist, it's getting splashed on a lot. How much water resistance is really ok for that? Or if you professionally work in a kitchen that would be even more of a concern. Or professionally a plumber, mechanic, or a roofer; the durability of the watches you buy seems important and it seems like water resistance is the only easily available indicator available for most of us.

For pure design, I prefer the Speedmaster to the Daytona, although I love a lot about many modern Daytona models (I like the new steel-ringed bezel, but miss the old thinner asymmetrical case.) One design element that Daytonas have over Speedmasters is that they look better in sunlight. Those white gold hour markers and 12 o'clock crown just pop off the dial. Teddy says it best, though: even if you (understandably) prefer the Daytona design and performance over the Speedmaster, it's hard to argue that it's twice as good from a price standpoint.

I agree that depth/water resistance isn’t practical for most, but I love watches for the heritage and more importantly the engineering that goes into it. So when a watch is over built, like the SAR rescue timer, for instance, and can withstand 100 atm, I’m impressed and attracted to that. The same comment can be taken to watch collecting at a meta level. Does one need to spend hundreds or thousands on a watch? I think the answer is no. I can’t remember who said this but if you’re buying a watch to tell time, you’re doing it wrong 😂 all that is to say, yes, I’m never going to need a diving watch at depths humans can’t even survive but I’m also not on the list to go to the moon any time soon, but they’re still awesome watches and cool to own 😊

Hot takes for next time: I've flooded several 50m watches getting pummeled by waves because I live a mile from the ocean and jump in all the time. 100m for me in rough water is all I need. Part of a luxery experience is how I am treated as a consumer. Being laughed at or forced to buy things I don't want to buy in order to be "offered" something I do is not luxury. I refuse to call brands or their surrogates that treat me this way by default "luxury brands".

Colourway is a reasonable way to describe different colour variants, I think some people just like to complain for the sake of complaining. I'm 100% with on WR, though I leave my watches on in the pool/at the beach. I figure they're made for the task, so I might as well enjoy them.

Yes please - more! And I had never heard of colorway until this video, probably heard it without realising (sorry I hate the s being replaced with the z). My take is that one man's pretentious is another man's norm, if we are using a word without intent then it is not a problem. If you are trying to make yourself more than you are by using a fancy word then don't. Keep using what works for you Teddy!

Like a lot of terms in a lot of industries, "colorway" is a term that has a specific use for professionals in that industry. Primarily it helps pros to differentiate between an otherwise identical product that has MULTIPLE color or pattern differences - i.e. not just a single color but a colorway. In running shoes, for instance, it helps manufacturers to instruct technical specialists and fitters/sales people on differentiating between shoes of the same model that have several color pallets. The ASICS Kayano does not come in multiple single colors, but multiple color pallets and patterns, or colorways. And again as in many other industries, it is a term that layman consumers often adopt to make themselves sound and/or feel more "in the know." Like people who refer to certain cars by their chassis codes in common conversation, they feel it makes them seem more knowledgeable, whether it reflects their actual knowledge of anything but the term or not. Some find this grating. Others don't. As with most language, how it is perceived says as much (or more) about the listener with an opinion as the speaker. You are a pro and you generally use the term properly. There is no reason for you to stop.

6:16 I would call those "everyday Black Bay" or "dress Black Bay" but I would definitely not drop the Black Bay name. It obviously goes with the same design DNA as Black Bay divers and it is a good marketing/branding strategy to anchor the derivative line firmly into the signature watch.

Based on how relatively few titanium watches that are available, it's clear that consumers generally don't want this material. I love Ti watches for their light weight and high scratch resistance. I really wish more watches come in Ti, such as the Tissot PRX. Tissot already makes a Ti Gentleman, why not a Ti PRX? When it comes to looks, the color of a Ti watch varies depending on the alloy, polishing, finishing, and coatings. Some Ti watches are practically undistinguishable from stainless. I understand why many people associate weight and heft with quality. I find that strange because in many other products in our daily lives, it's the opposite. Who wants to carry around a heavier laptop? Who wants a heavier phone or tablet? I personally don't want to feel like there is a brick tied to my wrist. I have a 43mm case size Citizen with Super Titanium that I could barely feel when I wear it. And that's a good thing!

I am bit late to the conversation 🙂, but the water resistance refers to pressure, not depth alone. So jumping off the pool edge vs diving to the bottom of the pool, for example. Hope that makes some sense 😁

well agreed most of points you made! only for water resistant though, the meter you go in is very different from the resistant meter. we stay on land w 1 atm but whenever you feel any air breeze on your face, it’s over 1 atm. I have dived up until 60m but the water movement wise it was so much over 100m pressure. when you swim, when you crawl, the presure your hand movement give to your watch can be well over the pressure of 30m depth equivalant of a force. I personally emailed to oris to ask about sixtyfive that if it’s iso6425 level 100m. if not, it’s risky to dive over 4-50m in heavy current points. in iso6425, to certify certain level of depth, it should cover at least 150% of pressure of the depth. please dont wear 50m watch thinking you can go 50m w it. you can go that deep in uniform 4 degree, perfectly still, no other substance other than H2O pool, and it has to be not you going down because it will increase the force too, but be you wearing that controled lab pool, standing still in the water while only the water pressure going up to 5 atm.

I have to correct you about water resistance: 50 meters of water resistance means that you can only splash it when you're washing your hands, 100 meters means that you can take a light dip in the pool and 200+ meters means that you can swim, dive and do plunges from every cliff you can find

i'm a big fan of the Tissot Gentleman. it has a fine fit and finish and is in many ways a more "substantial" watch than the PRX, which I compared side by side, including test wearing both. I already own a two toned Chemin Des Tourelles, on the bracelet, so I didn't pull the trigger on either, as it would have been a bit of a redundancy in my small collection. i actually like the Gentleman better than the fancier CDT for some reason. it seems somehow a more "honest and functional" unit. I seem to be wearing my 'lower end' watches more these days, and appreciating them! I own some mid-range Longines,' and pricier Cartier's but my two Orient Bambino's with different dials and bands are getting the wrist time lately. Of course, this from a guy who bought a Skoda instead of a similar spec Audi, and felt great about it! I LOVE 'maximum "bang for buck!" I see a Gentleman in my future!! On a different subject, I personally NEVER find you anything but polite, insightful, inclusive and professional! just "do you!" We love you!!

About titanium, I only have one, the formex field. I love it because it’s so light, but it’s also by far the loudest watch I own. I can hear it ticking from above 0.5m or almost 2 feet in a silent environment. I love every other aspect of the watch, but I cannot wear it to sleep. I even hear it during the day when I rest my head on my palm when sitting. All my other watches are only audible when very close to my ear. Never heard this in any review. Don’t know if it’s just the formex or if it’s titanium watches in general.

I think one being manual, and the other automatic, is a massive difference if people are actually choosing one over the other for purchase. If its just mouthing off in the comments to bash Rolex, then that is obviously something that can be ignored ;) The new Moonstrap with deployant looks like it could be a fantastic improvement for the Moonwatch.

I fundamentally disagree with the water resistance one. When I buy a watch, I divide it into two categories: 1. Dress watch 2. Other If it’s a dress watch, water resistance doesn’t matter, any extra resistance is just a nice bonus. If it’s other, so everyday, sports, outdoor I’ll buy only minimum 100m water resistant watches. I also always swim wearing my watch. I wear my watch everywhere, even on a beach. I don’t want to have my watch stolen. First mechanical watch I bought was Longines Hydroconquest. I picked it specifically because I love dive watches, I always wanted a watch I can safely wear while swimming in the pool or sea. Also it looks great, it is a dress diver and the bezel helps me measure time lapse at work.
