Funny you wondered about "L+R" inputs. That's a common thing to investigate in TASs, programmers usually don't account for it and in some games it can do interesting things that lead to faster times.

That's actually insane beating the game with those controls, I got done beating the game yesterday with 1-2 and 4-2 warps, played on the keyboard and still raged quite a bit. I would definitely lose my mind with those controls you used.

Great recommendation, Kosmic. And good work for the mat you were using. Sadly those soft cheap mats easily miss inputs or do unintentional two-button inputs. Some people who take it too seriously have cut open the mats to tape up parts of the sensor to avoid the double inputs and stuff... Unrelatedly I played DDR so much in College I got really bad shin splints on both legs :/ Too bad about your sub-6 for now, but at least you finished 8-4 *and* did BB glitch with a mat!

Reminds me of when I played Soul Calibur 2 with a DDR pad. I held the Mario 1 world record in 2004 (before web lists, 5:23) so I'm surprised I never thought of trying this.

Did you ever try L+R fast accel? Clearly the pad can send L+R inputs, since it needs to for DDR, but I don't know if the Wii VC version of SMB1 accepts it. I would assume it probably does.
