Today at Speedy's Garage we start the project of pinning the crank on our Dodge Hellcat Challenger Go Man Go. Not too bad with the right tools, and we show the difference in the original crank bolt and the new design that comes on all new Hellcats including the Hellcat Redeye and Dodge Demon. This will apply to the Dodge Hellcat Demon as well as the Dodge Hellcat Redeye and Hellcat Chargers.

So what does pinning the crank do exactly? I'm curious on the 6.2 pros and cons and stuff and I hope to get my own one day. Reliability is my top priority and I'm trying to do as much research as possible.

Wouldn't adding a hellraiser pulley with the clutch prevent the same reverse tension on the belt after WOT? I am putting on my Barth Tuning package soon which includes a hellraiser clutched pulley so wondering if pinning the crank is still needed/suggested.

Some say it's not needed but if the crank pulley spins new engine time. I run a Hellraiser and mine is pinned.

I have a 2018 Hellcat, do they have the new bolt? Also if you pin the crank on the stock pulley will this create any issues if you later wanted to switch to a smaller pulley?

Yes, 2018s all have the new bolt, you can crawl under there and look, it'll be black instead of silver. If you pin the stock crank pulley then decide to put an overdrive damper on later you'd just pin it 180 degrees.

So if I'm doing this on a 2016 hellcat motor, should I torque it to the 2 hundred and some change spec?? Or the 145 ft-lbs plus 150 degrees?

You'll be using a new bolt, so I'd use the new spec.

Blows my mind they didn’t come factory with a pin. My Shelby crank has a moon key to keep it from spinning

The sock fan/radiator in these is very good and PWM so it runs at any speed rather than just hi/lo.

If they know it's an issue now why are they not pinning the crank right from srt? All older naturally asperated engines had a key for timing gears...but I understand they use a crank driven oil pump .....but you would think they would pin them right at srt...who knows?!?!

Thats y hhp came out with the hellraiser pulleys 2.72 and 2.85 so u don't have to pin the crank

This is not true. Litens makes the decoupler pullies, not HHP, and yes you should still pin the crank even with a stock pulley. I buddy of mine had his stock car spin the crank pulley and ruin his engine bone stock. Heard of LOTS of this happening from shops that work on these cars as well.

I spoke to Josh at HHP about our upcoming appointment to take the Trackhawk up to about 900 HP and he said pinning the crank isn’t necessary. I’m putting a 2.85 Littens clutched pulley on and for me and my 6.2L, the answer is no. It’s not always necessary.

Speedy's Garage I did when he said I wouldn’t need it. His response was (paraphrasing) “Using the clutched pulley which is just like your oem design removes that instant shock after wot”. Obviously when you modify no one will ever say something can’t happen 100%. He said it was something they did early on before pulley options changed. So, should you pin your crank? The answer now should be “if you feel it’s necessary”. Their shop has never told me not to do something and then later on it turned out I needed it. Trust me, I’m nuts with being super safe. Pinning the crank was one of the first things I mentioned lol

For the $100 bucks or so it costs, I'd do it personally. This is right from their website: "Note 1: Pinning of the crankshaft pulley is not believed to be required with use of this pulley but no liability is assumed or implied by High Horse Performance, Inc. due to any damage that may occur due to unpinned cranks."

Speedy's Garage Absolutely true. I was emphatic in my concerns, but still Josh assured me that using the Littens clutched pulley over the Metco takes awaybthe stress and shock that was causing this issue. I plan on interviewing him when I drop the Hawk off in August and asking all of these specific questions. I’m a nut when it comes to worrying about safety.

Speedy's Garage I called HHP again just minutes ago. Putting together a video. Probably talk about it LiVE. On a stock balancer it’s not necessary at all. Early on there were only a handful of people that spin theirs and pinning the crank was the immediate response. They haven’t had one spin on a stock balancer as far as they know to date. Just fixed others that from other shops. Now, on an ATI they absolutely recommend it. I’ll have a full interview with Josh on this subject in August but wanted to get to the bottom of why they don’t recommend it for “me”. Stock balancer, don’t need it. ATI, need it. Hope that clears it up better.

It usually ruins the crank which means a new motor. Some get lucky though and can just install a new bolt.

@@SpeedysGarage mines came lose already , actually didn’t know what was wrong and started it up and drove it into my shop today, so I’m going to assume it’s good for a new bolt , or at least i hope so

Speedy's Garage I hear ya. I want to pin the crank on my Hellcat too, but I’ve got two years of motor warranty left and the fools at FCA are adamant about voiding the warranty if you pin the crank...which is something that should have done by Dodge at the factory.

It shouldn't. Removing material, then installing the dowel should maintain balance. I have seen a video installing that kit. Dowel holes should be finished with an exact size reamer. Also dowels with threads are available to make removal with a slide hammer a breeze.
