Only downside seems to be that they occupy a whole 5' square of thickness rather than the 1' the spell calls for. I wonder if it would change the spells significantly if they were houseruled to be a full 5' thick.

True point. Since most things in D&D are done in 5 foot increments, I can't see any reason such a house rule would disrupt things too much. -Theo
