Errol Spence Jr. defeated Chris Algieri via a brutal KO in the 5th round pm April 16, 2016 in Brooklyn, NY.
Chris Algieri, insinuated that Errol Spence Jr. had been “coddled,” and would, “feel my power early.” Algieri’s trainer John David Jackson, said the southpaw had “been spoon-fed his opponents” in advance of Saturday’s night’s 147-pound clash at Barclays Center.
But it was Algieri who was forced to eat his words, along with Spence’s punches from nearly the opening bell of a three-knockdown, fifth-round knockout as the loser was stopped for the first time in his career and and Spence earned his seventh straight knockout victory at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
Spence (20-0, 17 KOs) pinned Algieri (21-3, 8 KOs) on the ropes during the second and third rounds and unleashed a searing double-handed barrage of hooks, crosses and uppercuts.
Algieri took a knee after getting clobbered with a left cross in the fourth, and was sent reeling backward and onto his buttocks from the first knockdown in the fifth, and fell along the ropes on the last before referee Benji Esteves stepped in to end it at the 48-second mark.
