The most complete and essential guide to lens filters! How to use graduated filters, ND filters, polarizers, UV filters, and magenta filters in detail. Both beginners and advanced landscape photographers could learn something from this tutorial.
The video also covers which filters can be replicated in post-processing, and which cannot. For some reason, it's become popular in recent years to argue that filters are no longer very important for photography, and that most of them can be replicated in post-processing instead. But this is very misleading. In reality, lens filters are still one of the most useful pieces of gear in a landscape photographer's camera bag, and they aren't going away any time soon.
TABLE OF CONTENTS:
- 00:28 Graduated Filters
- 06:41 Neutral Density Filters
- 09:59 Polarizing Filters
- 14:28 UV Filters
- 16:05 Specialized and Color Filters
- 19:21 How to Buy the Right Filter

Hi Spencer. What a brilliant tutorial ! I am a recent subscriber. I currently own a number of filters, pretty much all available types, except the UV (I use the lens hood) and graduated filters (as I seem to be able to reproduce reasonable results in post). I wish I found this video 3 years ago when you made it. I have seen very few videos on filters, having mostly read articles on the subject. I have spent (wasted) a lot of money on filters until I found what I currently own. I am very, very glad I found your KZfaq channel. I am steadily working through all your videos, and I am learning a lot. So, please do continue to make these detailed videos. I know you spend a lot of time putting them together, and they are very content rich - but it is all very useful and all very practical advice. Thank you for your excellent work :)

The reason we learn so much from your videos, Spencer, is due to their depth. You are good at stripping (or explaining) away complexities to leave the viewer with a concrete understanding of basics. Plus, you communicate well, are articulate and are well prepared. You’re a natural teacher (as well as an accomplished doer).

Hey Jim, I just happened to have come back from Glacier National Park two days ago. I thought I would give you a friendly heads up that most of the park is CLOSED. They’re still letting people in but depending on what you plan to shoot, you may not have much access to the more popular spot. Hopefully since the holiday is over they might be letting more people in and open up more spots. Good luck.

Photography Life, there is not a lot of information on difference between soft and hard edge graduated ND filters at different focal lengths. Especially for enthusiasts like me who do not have access to the information which circulates within professional photographers. Wow! What a super job, well planned out, presented clearly and understandable, just a great job. Now, personally I like the longer more complete presentations ( need to slow down just a bit in your speaking) that covers every details. A little bit disappointed that you didn’t mention brands recommendations; but that okay since I did all my research and I settled on the Wine Country. Lots of reasons and you very well know why; separation rotating polarizer, all glass, all coated, on and on. It’s a no brainer - that is IF, IF, you can afford it. Oh, well. I even like that cases they offer (made by another company for their filter system) simply the best I’ve ever seen. Save a little longer and buy the best ..... period my friend. Good job.👍
@PhotographyLifeChannel
@PhotographyLifeChannel 4 жыл бұрын
Really appreciate it, Ralph! Glad you like the longer video length. Wine Country is an excellent filter company - you’re certainly right about the price though. It’s out of my range, but I’ve been happy with NiSi, B+W, and Lee for my filters. Talking about specific brands is hard, though, because I’ve seen both good and bad filters from almost every company. (The highest-end ones like Singh-Ray and Wine Country being exceptions; I don’t think they make a bad filter.)

I must state that the level of information provided here and the length of the video is absolutely spot on. I am an experienced photographer and still learnt some information from this video. Both your presentation and content were flawless in reality. In comparison with other “how To Videos” or informational videos this is head and shoulders above them. You asked for feedback on the format etc, I personally think this length is perfect. No single point mentioned was labored or too detailed, just the facts and information. Just the right length to drink my coffee too. Your personal recommendations make good sense and seem to be very credible. I have a selection of the filters you discuss here, but I have never really used them extensively, only in certain situations. I will now start to use the ND and Polarizing ones more and will probably throw my old UV ones away! Thank you and looking forward to more from you. Suggested topic if you haven’t done it already is how to get really sharp images, both with static subjects and fast moving (Sports) subjects etc. Once again thank you for the effort put in here and passing on this information in a very professional package.

That was a very clear and useful presentation. I hadn't realised the efffect of aperture on grad hardness either. Thanks! When it comes to making long or short videos - I think if you decide on what level of experience you want to teach to, then take as much care as you usually do with the presentation then the length will be what it needs to be. That's me being sincere, not me trying to be clever. This video was about the right length for its subject, it wasn't difficult to sit through in case there was anything new to me. The only improvement I could suggest would be to supply a list of the times at which each type of filter was introduced, perhaps even making it a link, just to make it easier to revisit any bits of special interest.

Fantastic. Really practical and comprehensive. Perhaps you could go over the pros and cons of the different holding systems eg magnetic vs more traditional system.

Thank you, David! In the case you’re talking about, I don’t see major issues with either method. The magnetic ones are nice because they snap in place more easily, but at the end of the day, it won’t change much about the photos themselves. I’ve got a two holding systems from different companies, and the only way I choose between them is whether or not I need the integrated polarizer in the one from NiSi.

I have a mid-range set of glass filters and I like them, but watched this video because I wanted to see more about their potential. What I was completely unaware of was that the polarizing filter, that I generally leave on my lens at all times, was variable by rotation. I can't believe I didn't at least figure it out by chance but this just made it so much more flexible. Probably a good reason for some unexpected bad shots, I'd say... (definitely not a photographer. But I like to play from time to time)

Really glad to hear it! You’ll get much more out of your polarizing filter now, I’d bet.

Like the format of a more comprehensive approach when the subject like this one warrants it. Especially appreciated the coverage on grads and the visual examples you showed for different focal lengths. I shoot a crop sensor D7500. What is your opinion of how a crop sensor may effect choosing between hard and soft grads? Lee filters seem to recommend that hard filters function as soft on crop sensors.
@PhotographyLifeChannel

Thanks for the feedback! When crop factor comes into play, things always get harder to make sense of. Part of that is because crop factor isn't just about focal length, but also aperture. All the examples I gave were shot at f/11, but on a crop sensor, you'd really be at about f/7.1 to get the same depth of field (assuming you're using a comparable lens; i.e, a 35mm lens on the crop sensor to a 50mm lens on full frame). So: 1. If you do everything equivalently, such as using a 35mm lens and shooting at f/7.1, it will look identical to the image at 50mm and f/11 2. If you merely use a 35mm lens on the crop sensor while keeping the f/11 aperture, you'll actually have a harsher transition on the crop sensor camera 3. If you have the same 50mm lens on both the full frame and crop sensor, and you keep your aperture the same, Lee is correct that the hard filter is going to look softer on the crop sensor camera. This is exactly like cropping each example photo by 1.5x, thus spreading out the gradient I'd say, to sum it up, that there is no functional difference between the two. That is, in a situation where you'd need to use (for example) 15mm and f/11 on a full-frame camera, you would ideally be using 10mm and f/7.1 on your crop-sensor camera to get identical results. At that point, the same grad filter in both of those cases will give the same appearance. So... Lee isn't exactly wrong, but they're basically assuming that you didn't zoom out your lens when you put it on the crop sensor, nor change the aperture. Man, that turned out long 😂
