If you are working on a scholarly desert project, you can stay overnight at the old Zzyzx mineral springs, where the rooms have been converted to dorms for those in the University of California's Desert Studies program! Come with me as I explore the accommodations and other facilities...plus take a side trip for dinner at the Mad Greek in Baker, before returning to Zzyzx for some nighttime exploring in the creepy old abandoned bathhouses! This place is a real desert gem!

Great show! I started taking classes in fall of 1990. So many I lost track. In the library scene, the ceramic pots in the corner were done by me using native clay I found at the "side pool" at the Soda Spring. Have been doing ceramics for over 50 years. Enjoy all your trips, keep it up girl!!!!

It's been a while since I went through Baker. My late husband Karl and I lived at the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley National Monument, back in '79 and '81, and he was a master electrician. We've likely have driven past Curtis Springer's old resort, as I remember the road sign. Wow, seems like forever now.

20:00 When I was at Death Valley they had a 20 mule team come through as part of a reenactment/research thing. It was really impressive to see all those animals working together. It is so LONG too.

We've 4WD the entire Mohave Trail from just south of Laughlin across the desert to I 15 between Baker/Barstow. It takes about three days with tons of historical sites alone the way. We drove across the dry lake in front of that resort. You may have seen a pile of rocks the the center of the dry lake. The tradition is when you complete the trail, you leave a rock in that pile. Now here's the cool part. If you climb to the top and look down into the center, you'll see a plaque with a secret known only to those who have made the journey. Ya need to upgrade to a CJ or a Hummer which I drive....until we get to shelf roads. Then the wife takes the wheel

I have only seen Big Horn Sheep once in my life. Back in '88, my Army unit was the first to be deployed for the Yellowstone Forest fire. We did some pretraining in an area where there hadn't been any humans in like a 150yrs. We were about 75 meters away. They kinda cocked their heads to one side trying to figure out what kind of animals we were. It was an awesome experience, aside from the reason why we were there. 3million acres burned in that fire.

Sarah: Another great presentation. I have stayed at DSC many times. I have taken more than 70 extension classes there. I'm one of those 'science' guys. Also I have been a potter for more than 50 years and I found a clay deposit near Zzyzx and the two pots on the shelf in the library are ones I made from that clay (19:50)... Another great presentation! All the best to you...

Spent a night in Zzyzx in April of 1989. Organized a "Star Party" group of amateur astronomers from the Riverside Astronomical Society, about 8 of us, to take our telescopes out to. Figured it must be dark being half way between LA and Vegas. Called the Cal State University people in control of it and they gave us the ok to go. Turned out to be windy as WH noted and there was a lot of dust kicked up from the dry lake. Wasn't as dark as we had hoped either, altitude is more important than distance from lights. Never went back there, but it was the only place I have ever seen a Big Horn Sheep in the wild, scampered up the side of a cliff there faster than I could run on flat ground when I was 17!

Mohave tui chub Formerly found in deep pools of the Mojave River, this species now only occurs in highly modified refuge sites in San Bernardino County. populations occur at three sites: Soda Springs (Zzyzx Springs), the Department's Camp Cady Wildlife Area, and China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station (NAWS). At Camp Cady, the population is thriving in two ponds, one of which is threatened by encroaching vegetation. Mosquito fish and Asian tapeworm were discovered at Soda Lake in 2001, with unknown consequences for the chubs. Perhaps the most secure population exists at China Lake, where the US Navy monitors and protects a population numbering in the thousands. China Lake was chosen as a refuge site and the Mohave tui chub were introduced into Lark Seep in 1971.

Not abandoned been desert studies center since 1976 shortly after the mineral spa closed in 1974 due to legal reasons. All the buildings have working lights and accomodations except the two derelict buildings that have unstable foundations, thus unused. Exterior lights are on part of the evening as well. Not as creepy as the video tries to make it seem since its been a college for decades.

I love the old time capsule motel room. Now that is what motels used to look like. Not the Route 66 crap motels that people spend a lot of money to stay in, with the fancy retro future, and 50 inch flat screen TVs on the wall. That room is probably exactly like it was when it was a resort. At one time there might have been a sink under medicine cabinet, but that would have been all. Since there was the bath house and public showers, the guests didn't need to have that in their rooms.
