I love my LBZ.. But here's what I found out. 1- Massive weight difference. Don't be lauching too high you'll break a lot of stuff, and you really feel it in deep mud and winching. 2- Its definatly not cheaper to run. Uses 10 liters of oil instead of 5, oil filter is 3x the cost ( GM parts comparrison) plus a $100 fuel filter if your running factory. But you'll need to add 2 more because you should run a lift pump for the fuel for any deisel truck. When they do break parts are way more than an LS and a lot needs to come off to get to the motor. A set of injectors cost what I pay for a complete LS...Up side... Off road low range incredible fuel milage with tons of torque on demand. Towing is effortless and more realiable especially in deep water. I would reccommend ARP head studds and fuel rail race plug. No more than a 500HP tune which will get you into the 700-775 fp of torque. I'd look into a DSP switch( 5 different tunes) Check out Duramax Tuner on KZfaq for good info. Get some sort of lift pump (FASS).. If your using the Allison trans, definitly a better torque converter and slight buld. Same with the transfer case. It will need a pump rub kit, and upgraded input/ out put bearings.. After all that I still prefer the Dmax for any long distance drives !00% Great Video Thx!

Always remember Torque is in relation to Power! as of RPM. If you lower the RPM in which an engine produces power, Torque will climb and the other way around. So the reason why a 6BT produces so much torque is because it revs just to 2-3 k rpm. So in an low reving application, like for orr road or touring an engine with low down tq is nice. Here in Germany it can be completely different: When I drive to work I will go 100 mph, usually when partly free, or 150 mph when free. So max torque @3000 PRM is not so usefull, because my Z3 is @ 3500 RPM @ 120k/h (75mph).

I think that it's not so much that diesel makes more torque (though it usually does on paper) but that the low rev torque is massively more useful for what you're doing with it. Power is only torque multiplied by revs after all and who wants a 4wd that has to be right up in the revs to do well?

Sorry bro, I’m a boosted petrol head…diesels make MORE torque hands down every time. Liter for liter a diesel will create more torque than a petrol. These duramaxes are truck motors. There is nothing petrol powered with the same capacity that will match torque curves. There are no petrol trucks there is a reason for that.

Great choice. Your smart at avoiding the powerstroke because they are the least reliable of all the American diesels. That cummins that you drove I believe was the old 5.9. The newest 6.7 is smooth and quiet for a diesel. I love my 6.6 duramax.

A little bit of misinformation about the Cummins. Only the pre-2003 engines and the p-pump mechanical engines are loud and rattley, not all of them. The common rail engines released around the same time as the lbz and the later 6.7 engines are much quieter and smoother and are on par the the duramax and arguably are slightly cheaper to extract power put of. Not sure why you need so much power for a 4wd that was never designed for it.. hence broken diffs and gearboxes etc but each to their own.. Something like 150-200hp and near 600nm of torque at the wheels is plenty for a GU. The TD seems to get a bit of flack for being a kettle but it's about the same amount of repetitious nonsense as those people that say land cruisers are reliable lol. I've seen a lot of TD42's north of 800 thou km with unopened engines still going strong.. If you're sensible with mods and servicing it'll last a long time.. But if you're chasing reliable big power north of 250hp I agree with you that it ain't the engine to be using.

The Patrol is a 4WD , not a race car. TD42’s do just fine and don’t over heat if you keep the afr’s in check and tuned properly with 15/20 psi boost. If you need more torque and power than that then sure do a conversion like this one or buy a RAM or Chevy 2500 diesel heavy duty. If you don’t mine getting somewhere a little bit slower then use a 4WD as it was built out of the factory. They were never designed to go fast.

Sam I think you should have explained the power and torque thing a bit better for those that don't understand. Half your viewers probably think power is measured on the dyno which is obviously not the case. The difference between the two engines is not the power, just the torque. That difference comes from the chemical differences between the fuel and the induction. Then if you explain how power is calculated it becomes obvious why you would choose a disel for this application. For those that don't know, power(kW) = torque(Nm) x RPM/9.5488. So the faster you spin an engine (petrol) the more power it makes because of higher RPM. A better comparison between the two engines would be to compare their torque curves and where in the rev range they make peak torque.

Your also forgetting maintenance and parts availability - to make a diesel last it needs to be serviced every 5000km so there goes your fuel savings. Parts a standard Ish LS alternator etc will be available at pretty much every super cheap good luck with that for a duramax around aus. As for driveline braking that’s partly the joys of a heavy rig with a manual with power. If you stuck with a 6l90e you would of more than halved the driveline headaches.

Barra? If torque was an issue with the Ls… the barra won’t cut it, ok if your running the quarter in a car half the weight, but having to keep it spooled while you pull hills towing? gross. . .If that was the case another 1fzfe with a super charger would have been a better choice, particularly if it was the 5.0 stroker. At the end of the day when torque is needed, pound for pound the diesel will deliver. Not my cup of tea, but when there is a purpose ( in this case pulling weight) it’s the right tool for the job. But it does not excite me anywhere near as much as the cruiser.

Diesel are way more complicated. But they are bigger heavier engines they can take more punishment.
