Needed this for an upcoming project. - CAD files: www.thingiverse.com/thing:485... - It was based on a design found in this paper, thanks guys: journals.sagepub.com/doi/full....

Imagine having this on the wall or above a doorway painted like an eye, linked to a motion camera.

This is exactly what I needed, I'm thinking of using it for a large animatronic joint like forearms or arms in general

yep, i was just thinking to myself "i need an actuated ball joint" ...for animatronic/robot hip & shoulder

What servo motor are you using in this?

Can you tell us what this assembly will do in your project? It looks like it could be a very large eyeball mechanism for animatronics, but the design looks like it will deliver a lot more torque than needed for animatronics service.

Thanks for the question. I wanted to try a few things with it, but now don't think it will really be suitable for any of them. I did design a smaller one to try as an eyeball mechanism. The thinking being that the heads of robots are usually rammed to the brim with electronics, so it could save valuable space compared to the usual animatronic eye configuration, however this doesn't have eyelids, so would need additional servos outside anyway. Another idea wanted to try is attaching strong neodymium magnet where the 4 bolts are, and then the yellow layer would be covered completely by the black outer shell..this was looking to try and make a megabot from the movie big hero 6, but all sorts of problems with that. What inspired originally though was when came across this, grabcad.com/library/jarde-dummy-1, and just thought could make some nice looking robots with a spherical joint, but all existing ones are very complicated/expensive. I am working on an improved version with more powerful/accurate motors, and making a robot arm to see if it will work. cheers

Very nice. Could you do a video disassembling it so we can understand how it goes together and how it works?
