This physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into spherical mirrors such as concave mirrors and convex mirrors. It explains how to use the mirror equation to calculate the image distance given the focal length and the object distance. The focal length is the distance between the focal point and the mirror. The focal length is half of the radius of curvature. The focal length is positive for concave mirror and negative for convex mirrors. This video explains how to tell if the image is real or virtual. The image is real if solid lines converge to form the image. the image distance is positive for real images and negative for virtual images. The image is enlarged if the image height is greater than the object height. If the absolute value of the magnification is less than 1, the image is reduced. The image is upright if the magnification or the image height is positive. The image is inverted if the magnification is negative. This video contains plenty of examples and practice problems on geometric optics. two ray diagrams with concave mirrors are included in this video.

I think focal length for concave mirrors are negative because lengths are measured from the pole and lengths opposite to the direction of incident ray is negative

I know this is super late and you probably already pass this class along time ago. The reason you don't take do - di, is because it was a real image and not an imaginary one. Hope that might of answer your question, if it still keep you up at night a year later. XD

f as in the focal length is not negative because it is positive for CONCAVE mirrors and for CONVEX mirrors, it is negative.

what if you don't know the type of mirror, the radius of the curvature, the image distance, or the lateral magnification
@aryamaupadhyaya6014
@aryamaupadhyaya6014 3 жыл бұрын
If you don't know the type of mirror, the values of f, v or u will be given with respective signs and if we don't know the radius, we can find the focal length by the mirror formula and double it, if the image disttance isn't known we can use mirror formula or magnification and if magnification isn't given.....well after all that this wouldn't be hard to calculate

lol when would the absolute value of M ever be less than 1, unless its zero . And if it could only be zero why not just say "|M|= 0 = reduced" .
