Spice Girl Mel B joins Drew Barrymore to discuss her memoir, "Brutally Honest" and recalls a time where she attempted su*c*de in order to leave an abusive relationship.
Below is an excerpt from Mel B's book "Brutally Honest" on signs you may be in a domestic violence relationship :
1. Tells you that you can never do anything right
2. Shows extreme jealousy of your friends and time spent away
3. Keeps you or discourages you from seeing family or friends
4. Insults, demeans, or shames you with put-downs
5. controls every penny spent in the household
6. Looks at you or acts in a way that scares you
7. Prevents you from making your own decisions
8. Prevents you from working or attending school
9. Destroys your property or threatens to hurt or kill your pets
10. Pressures you to have sex when you don't want to or do things sexual that you aren't comfortable with
11. Pressures you to use substances

I’m pretty sure that “yep” was her assuring & validating what Mel said. Abusers will get more vicious and violent the more they see they have no control over you. As a trauma survivor, I got that. What was it you meant by saying Drew’s “yep” was very telling??

Been there before. I was literally dying in pain and begging him to take me to the hospital and he kept telling me to just take a nap. I drove myself to the ER and they said my appendix was about to explode and rushed me into surgery. we never spoke again.

I have gone through this as well, but after I took the pills... like maybe 2 hours later, I realized I eas not going to die for loving someone that didn't love me (as much) back. So that's why I'm still here and the thought of making my parents sad.

Thanks so much Mel B. I know of what you speak having done that myself because of abusive husband. Every time, I realized that it would never be him that found me, it would be my children, so I decided to call for help to save myself.

Yeah that’s how my ex bf would react too. Telling me I’m useless and nobody cares about me. It just got so normal because that’s how he always talked that I would just laugh it off or chalk it up to him just being insecure. I loved him despite the emotional abuse and in the process of that I was being drained completely and when I ended up alone, oh I felt it.
