Recently I saw Kenny Garrett in concert --- awesome! I listened to a recording of one of his solos, it was basically just using the blues scale --- the notes were pretty easy to "transcribe", but the dynamics, articulation, scoops, fall-offs, rhythms, etc. were so complex, but they made the (relatively simple) solo really hot.

Yeah, he's the perfect example of the way you play is more important than the actual notes. He has so much soul in his playing that he can just hold a whole note, and it sounds great. But if you try and transcribe one of his bebop solos, you're going to be in for some serious work! 😀

Could you explain why you add the major 6th instead of the minor? Is that a more bluesy sound?

Hey! Great question, the 6th will be dependent on the tonal center scale (the root scale). So if you are going for the dorian sound then you would use the maj6. If you're going for the natural minor sound you would go for the b6. So if I were using this playing over the song Impressions I would use the major 6th because that tune is based off of the dorian minor scale. If I were doing it over the tune Song For My Father, I would use the b6 because that is based off of the natural minor scale. If I were playing over a standard blues progression I would use the maj6 because that's the 6th that is in the tonal center scale. In the beginning, if you're not sure, try both. One will sound better than the other. Long answer! Hope that helps.
