I'm very disappointed. Current code requires the use of a GFCI breaker for all outlets in a garage, including 240v. Yes you're using it as a shop, but the space would still be defined as a garage for code purposes. You also made no mention of using a torque wrench/driver for the terminal screws. Neither of these would've made an appreciable difference in the video length.

@@thomasbonse its very unlikely anyone is going to install a gfci for a welding outlet including myself. They only way would be if its new construction and its getting inspected. It never used to be that way and is totally unnecessary. And ive never used a torque wrench on a residential breaker. In a commercial MDP, yes definitely . I also mentioned to follow all local code requirements. Get real with what your nitpicking my video about. Its residential and you know it was a clean install.

@@SpicerDesignsLLC You are the one presenting yourself as a master electrician on an otherwise instructional video for DIYers. I pointed these specific issues out because there's good safety reasons for both and was part of the reason they made it into recent editions of NFPA 70. Too many DIYers don't know the relevant codes or even how to find the right information, so end up doing their project unsafely. I'm not pointing these issues out to nitpick, but rather because some of your audience may have only seen this video before they go off and try it themselves.

@@thomasbonse a “master electrician” is a non union foreman. I would never call myself a “master electrician”. I have been a union electrician for 20 years and been exposed to every aspect of electrical work. The arc fault breakers were a joke and the gfi on a welding outlet is a joke. Its just insurance companies trying to cover there ass. Nothing i presented in this video was unsafe. Are they making people go back and install gfci’s on welding outlets when it wasnt code just a short time ago? Whos enforcing that? If you dont agree with my install you are welcome to make your own video.

@@thomasbonse to be clear, i live in Indiana which has not adopted the new code requirements. Were still operating from the 2008 code. So nothing i did in my video was a code violation. Thats why i said follow your local code requirements If you want to get technical about it. Even if we were i still wouldn’t put it on a gfi.

From a Prior US Navy Nuc Electrician, Nicely Done, Very Nicely Done! A note to those doing this. Before you check the panel de-energized, first use your meter to check it energized. This is not for checking the panel, its for checking your meter so when it shows zero voltage you know its not due to it being broke! I've been lit up by 440v on my Sub, blew a section of skin right off.

@@SpicerDesignsLLC Thanks for doing what you do! I have one question I can’t find not related to this exactly but maybe you know. The info on my welder says “Insurge amps”: 31A. Is that how many amps it takes before damaging the welder? And will a 30A breaker still be good? Operating amps is 25A.

@@NomadSaga thats just the inrush current when you start welding. It will spike momentarily and then settle to the operating current. I’ve done a fair bit of 120 and I’m getting ready to do the 240 for a welder and plasmas cutter. I’ve done a fair amount of research but a lot of the information is not consistent. Finally a video by an electrician. I don’t like the way I was going to add a second box just for the breakers for the 240 so I ordered a larger box to house all the breakers in the garage. I bought a pair of 30 amp breakers and I’m using 6/3 copper wire.

Great video...I like to use the NEMA L15-30 style in all my welding applications because they make the male and female in a plug setup that is way less bulky for making an extension cord and they are twist lock and hold up so much better than the dryer plugs. I appreciate this informative video. Been wondering why my 240v outlet in the shed is only putting out 120 on each leg but 0 when combined. I took apart the outlet and inspected/cleaned it thinking that was it but nope. I checked the 30 amp breaker. 120 on each leg and 240 combined so that checked out ok. I then noticed that someone attached both hot wires from the shed to only one 120v pole on the breaker. I'm no expert but that just didn't make sense. Why would someone do that? Mistake maybe? IDK. The information in this video confirmed that in order to get 240V each wire has to connect to its own 120V breaker pole. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise. Liked and subbed.

@@SpicerDesignsLLC Okay thanks so much for the info, I have several panels and I found one a subpanel that has two 60amp breakers inside one with a test button on it, I was thinking I would use that in the shop so I could run another 30 amp breaker just for the lights and drill press etc. what I really need is a 200amp service that is for next spring the house is 100 amp and I have 2224 aluminum going 90 foot to my garage and I have one lincoln presision 275 tig that requires 115 amps per manual I have yet to use because lack of amps so I set aside some 1/0 copper for spring but the electric company suggested Not to have the run from the house to garage and just have them run a line to the garage 200amp and have a meter on that, problem is i am against those smart meters and that's all they use these days, I mean if they could keep the meter at the pole and not near the garage I would do it. One of those dang things for me is enough man, when they first put that thing in ringing ears constantly and other issues, i just don't like them. but 200amp service that would really be the ticket for the garage so I could power up it along with the two other work sheds I built around the garage, I will take your advise and go with a subpanel in the shed and just use the 6/4 I have and cap one of the extra lines like you did in this video, thanks for the advice.

this is very helpful however; I am having a hard time grasping why the earth ground is all that 220 needs and 110 uses the common white. I got 220 wire and it has red, black, white, and brass. I was presuming the brass goes to the box as it does with 110, the white would be the common for the two 110/ 220. Now I see the common is not used... I did not connect to the panel yet, I wonder what would have happened if I had connected the white to plug and panel common. Why is 220 so different from 110? Box outlet is ground to same ground as plug... to panel green / earth ground buss. I am having a hard time making sense of this.... but thanks for the video anyway.

It can be confusing to understand the concept. Its a split phase system. The neutral allows you to use half the potential of the voltage available which is the 240 volt. If you hooking up a welder, youll just need two conductors that will land on a two pole breaker and the bare ground will connect to the outlet as well. You only see a 240 volt circuit with a neutral on something like an oven or a dryer. Usually it’s something with some kind of display or control thats operating off 120 volt and doesnt have an internal control power xfmr.

Did the calculation for my multimatic 215 with 20% duty cycle and manufacturers spec of length under 50'. Nec minimum was nema 6-50r 14 awg on a 40a breaker. I did 10's on a 30. Fla of 31a for 2 minutes probably won't even trip the breaker anyway.
@SpicerDesignsLLC
@SpicerDesignsLLC 10 ай бұрын
General rule of thumb is to size the breaker at 125% of the full load amps. At a minimum. 14awg wire is only good for a 15 amp breaker. Not sure if that was a typo or not. Usually would have #8 awg for a 50 amp.

@@SpicerDesignsLLC I agree cover your ass. but the astrix at the bottom of table 310.16 refers to a list of exceptions in table 240.4. Welders can ignore prior ampacity requirements and refers you to 630.12 for sizing conductors. Thwn 14's has 20a rating but the ocp can be no more than 200%. 14's on a 40 I couldn't believe it either.

@@joeaubert7224 ya you cant have 14’s on a 40 amp circuit. Ive never seen anything like that. If theres a chance of anything else being used on that circuit its a fire hazard. Thats what starts fires is undersized conductors. Something doesnt seem right with that exception. Ill have to look into that.

@SpicerDesignsLLC Good video. I appreciate all the work that went into it! A good general rule of thumb is to follow the welder manufacturer's installation instructions. For example, on a Lincoln AC225 arc welder, instructions say 10AWG up to 100 feet, with a 50 Amp fuse. Yeah, they actually say fuse. I understand why you're questioning it, but per NEC, you can factor the duty cycle of the welder into the calculations. I copied this - "Welding duty cycles are expressed in percentages of each 10 minutes that a welding machine can run before it automatically shuts down. For example, a 60% welding duty cycle means you can use the welding machine for 6 minutes out of every ten and rest for 4 minutes." A simple way of understanding it is that a welder with a 20% duty cycle can only run 2 minutes out of every 10. If you push that and overheat the unit, it will shut down. That also limits conductor heating. It's both code compliant and manufacturer suggested. What if something else gets plugged in there? 1.What else uses the same plug with only 3 prongs? 2.We can label the outlet for "Welder Only". There's no risk of anything else being plugged into my home shop welder receptacle. EVs, ranges, dryers, RVs, all use 4 prongs per code. It's smart to think of the what ifs, but I'm not responsible if some hillbilly violates code. On the other hand, if you're not comfortable with that, there's nothing wrong with pairing the conductor with the breaker ampacity, like you did. But 100 feet of 10AWG is cheaper than 100 feet of 6AWG!

Here is a tip to pass along. My electrician installed my welder outlet sideways on purpose. He told me if installed right side up (the way you did), the plug will not hold as tight. When installed sideways, the weight of the cord puts a twist on the prongs to help them grip better than just a dead hanging tension. I have three 240V devices so I am often swapping out plugs to that one outlet and this is causing it to get loose, however, the plugs always stay put because of the outlet orientation helping to retain them.
@SpicerDesignsLLC
@SpicerDesignsLLC 10 ай бұрын
I understand what your saying but im not a big fan of that. It puts extra stress on the cord and it will eventually fail. Those larger amperage plugs are typically pretty stiff and hold well. If its working for you thats great. Thanks for sharing

Cheers. Getting my shop plans worked out currently, including where to put some strategic 240s. As an electrician, does every 240v line require a circuit? I'm a one man shop - I can't use two welders at once - but it might be handy to have, say, a main 240 in the shop and one outside for some stick work at another time. I imagine if I have a 240v compressor (down the road) I'll give that one its own since it'll come on and off at various times.

If you have multiple pieces of equipment your going to want separate circuits. If you want to spread out some welding outlets in different areas of the shop then you can use the same circuit. If you run two at the same time it will just trip the circuit.

Its likely you can. Dryers are typically 40-50 amp circuits. You can always downsize the breaker on a larger conductor. Then just replace the receptacle to match the welder.

I'm a D.I.Y the ground wire if you have grounding bar at the circuit breaker box why are you grounding the outlet box as well ?
@SpicerDesignsLLC
@SpicerDesignsLLC Жыл бұрын
Because its conductive metal. If something were to short against that metal box it could become energized. Thats why it needs to be grounded so it would short against the metal box and trip the breaker. If your using metal boxes with romex they have to be grounded.

@@SpicerDesignsLLC appreciate the explanation on grounding the metal box. So I am assuming this is only because you have attached the metal box to a wooden stud right? If mounting the metal box to a metal building that is already grounded then this would not be required right? Thank you! ~Ron

@@ron.bennett you would still need to ground it through the electrical panel even though the building steel is grounded. If your using conduit instead of romex then you wont need the grounding conductor.

@@SpicerDesignsLLC correct sorry I should have been more clear on this. Yes the bare ground wire coming from the plug is ran back through metal conduit to the sub-panel and is grounded there. (ground and neutral are separated in the panel) The sub-panel itself is grounded to the metal building and to two grounding rods outside that are at least 6' apart and 8' deep. With all this, then there is no need to ground the wire inside the metal box correct? I mean it wouldn't hurt to go ahead and ground it there, but it would not be required right? Again thank you for your time. ~Ron
