And another fun US fact I didn’t know till recently, Vermont was actually part of Quebec before it was part of New York - and it’s actually a sneaky americanization of its original French name - “Vert Mont” - as in green mountain - like the coffee company - you can look it up!

Expanding to 40 teams is a terrible idea. The talent of the league would be so diluted, even more than it currently is. The only reason the NHL is so obsessed with expanding is because it's so poorly run it depends on expansion fees for financial stability. Maybe make sure all the current teams can actually survive without being subsidized by the top teams before expanding by 8 more southern teams.

When we don't have a team in a 5000 seat bush league stadium and when we don't have an executive from a northern team publicly stating they likely won't survive there much longer...THEN lets talk about expansion. To broach the topic in the same approximate timeline BOTH these events are happening is ridiculous.

I have a bone to pick with Adam over a tiny comment, when talking about the "bad arena placement" in Atlanta I have no idea what he's talking about, the arena that the Thrashers played in is in the middle of downtown Atlanta. It wasn't due to lack of fan support for either team, it was absolutely awful owners and management.

for reference : when a goalie is just in a regular butterfly position, their ankles are about 10-15 degrees away from what in jiujitsu is called a "heel hook". It's a position you have to learn to tap BEFORE you feel any pain because if you wait until it hurts your knee is already being torn apart. CORSI actually started as a stat to measure goalie workload and how many times they were dropping to butterfly in practice and games.

I think the playoff situation right now is perfect, 1/2 of the league makes it and the other half doesn’t. This leaves some genuinely good teams outside the playoffs, but I think that’s a good thing! It makes the regular season much more exciting and helps keep competition strong at the tail end of the regular season. I think 20 teams having the chance to win the cup in a 32 team league is too much

Hearing Jesse say there should be 30 teams in the playoffs in a 40 team league made me cringe. They've complained about the regular season being meaningless before, yet he proposes single elimination knockout. In hockey, where teams didn't want to play 2 games because they were afraid of Price. Just completely out for lunch

Atlanta hockey fan here! Moved here a decade ago from St Louis and know tons of people who loved the Thrashers - the big reason the Thrashers failed is because when Turner decided to sell the team to Atlanta Spirit Group, they made them buy both the Hawks AND the Thrashers, when they really only wanted to buy the Hawks. The NHL knew this and didn't step in to do anything about it. Having an ownership group that never wanted to own you in the first place is not what I'd call a recipe for success

Hey Steve, not for nothing but as a Canadian expat living in New York City, (but I grew up in Toronto learning, virtually nothing about American geography, - and I’ve been watching the Leafs since 1968, so I more than feel your pain ) , New Jersey is on the other side of the Hudson river from New York City , connected by two bridges, and two tunnels - so think of it lkinda ike Ontario and Quebec being connected by two bridges around the Parliament buildings. And FYI, Nashville is in Tennessee - so it doesn’t matter if you don’t know where Kentucky is - cause they don’t have an NHL hockey team…

That's how this works with every non-leafs team, though? If your team isn't the leafs/didn't just face the leafs the only way they're appearing on the pod is if they're on a big winning/losing streak or just had some big news come out (trade/injury/controversy). There are some exceptions to this, sure, but usually this is what causes the majority of non-leafs teams appear on the pod

Heck I had that giant smoke detector right under my window, looked at it every day lamenting the fact that it's NHL empty... Come on!! We're chomping at the bit here!! Also, for your geography bit, I always thought that San Jose was just outside Los Angeles, and then Anaheim would have been far further more inland. Then, it made me wonder why did the NHL not have a team in San Francisco. Turns out San Jose is it, and Anaheim is much closer to LA than I thought... Discovered that when I moved about 20 minutes out of Anaheim (in Irvine). That proves one thing: I'm far better at science than I am at geography 😅

As a Wings fan, I think both of Detroit's slides this season coinciding with Larkin injuries should put more emphasis on how important he is to this team. He's not a top 10 center but I think he should be in the argument for 11-15. Which isn't bad but their center depth is weak where when he goes down, they really struggle to fill his spot collectively. This team still needs another quality center and Compher isn't it. He'd make one of the best third line centers if they had the depth to slot him in there. They also need to completely overhaul their blueline because from what I can see it's Seider, Walman, a guy who is only useful on the PP and 3 guys you'd be okay with if they're your sixth defenseman and then Holl.

@andyholland2130 3 ай бұрын
@scottstenlund433 Multiple lists? Where are these lists? Name just one. I'm not basing mine on just points either but this is as I see it, these are my top ten. 1) McDavid 2) Mackinnon 3) Barkov 4) Matthews 5) Draisaitl 6) Petterson 7) Crosby 8) Aho 9) Hintz 10) Hughes I'd have Larkin in the conversation for the 11th to 15th with guys like Point, Thomas, Schiefele, Hischer, and Miller. There's a few guys listed as centers, I would agree are much better players than Larkin but they're mainly being deployed as wingers like Reinhart being a prime example. I personally would have the 11-15 listed as Hischer, Point, Larkin, Schiefele, Thomas. Bedard is a wild card as he's proven he's lethal offensively but that's about it, right now. By the end of his ELC, he's probably top 3. He's also harder to gauge exactly what his deficiency is defensively on such a rock bottom team.

@andyholland2130
@andyholland2130 3 ай бұрын
@@workshoptelescope I didn't say Walman was. But he's definitely a guy you'd be good with on your second pairing. Definitely, if he's your 4th best defenseman. But he's vastly better than the rest of the d-core outside of Seider, who is 22. Seider is definitely a top pairing defenseman but he's overworked because no one else can handle his assignments on the team and as Walman has been his best defense partner, Seider would get a great boast to the rest of his numbers if he had a left shot defenseman who was a first pairing level defender.

@@andyholland2130 it wasn’t an accusation of something you said. You mentioned overhauling the D and keeping them. I was saying I don’t feel they should stay. Statistically, they’re both second line guys forced to play first line minutes because the cupboard is bare. The roster is bereft of championship caliber, franchise-defining talents. They platooned their scoring right until the PTO bender ended. The team is what it is and will be this for at least the next three years. Trades won’t fix it. Drafting won’t fix it until an actual tank happens, sadly.

Yzerman did the same thing with the lightning when they first started making waves. He didn’t go all in and mortgage future assets. He waited for the right coach, system and players to develop. I’m sure the team has overachieved in his eyes. Of course he overpaid a few players to shore up some weakness in the roster. I remember when he paid filipula 5m a year to play with the bolts. After 3 years he was traded to the flyers in a cap dump. When young talent had pushed its way through the lineup. Give it another 2-3 years and Detroit will be a real contender built from the ground up. You need a solid farm system to develop and move talent up and down. I’d bet he signs more vets next year and flips them for assets as the trade deadline. I am somewhat surprised he didn’t move any impending free agents at this deadline. Though I have absolutely no clue about Detroit’s cap and roster situation.

Not a single player in Detroit’s system projects comparably to any of Tampa’s eventual core players. The team is anemically constructed.

I'd like to see a 36 team league for a couple years before jumping to 40. 6 divisions of 6. 4 games against your 5 divisional opponents and 2 games against every other team makes for an 80 game schedule. Playoffs include a play-in best of three for teams placed 7-10 in the conference. With 2 less regular season games you should have the time to fit in the best of 3. Added cities could be Houston, Salt Lake, Atlanta, Toronto/Hamilton. Hamilton allows better capture of KW region fans while still being an option for the GTA

Vermont sounds landlocked to Steve because it comes from the French “vert” (green) and “mont” (mountain). I feel like as a Canadian he subconsciously understood 😂 And according to the internet, Steve is right. The St. Lawrence Seaway doesn’t count 🫣 The idea is you have to have direct access to the coast; if you have to go through someone else’s territory to get there it doesn’t count 🫣 But I only know that bc I googled to make sure that Vermont actually came from French 😅 no judgment from this part of the compliments section!! I’m just here to say Steve is smarter than he thinks 😤

it isn't just about Johansen or Sean Walker, Philly acquired 2025 first round pick and 2024 first round prospect Bonk, and 2 second round picks in losing Provorov and acquiring Walker, and then trading Walker for Johansen. Sorry Dangle, but Smashville is paying half of Johansen's contract, and remember this is part of next year's headache for them. They, Nashville, decided to buyout several contracts and next year, they're pulling a Minnesota. Philly is only eating half of Johansen's contract. Oopsies. See the above acquisitions of first and second round picks by Philly.

How is Vermont "technically" on the St Lawrence Seaway? Huh?
