For a bit of context, the story of the terminally ill child is based on the 1984 story "The Kid who Collects Spider-Man". In this story Peter visits the young Tim Harrison, who is a die-hard Spider-Man fan, having collected every news article and bit of memorabilia associated with the hero. The two trade anecdotes about Spider-Man’s career, and Peter lets slip that he may not be the great hero that Tim imagines him to be, including telling him about the death of Uncle Ben, but the kid reassures him by reminding him of all the people he has saved. Peter embraces Tim, but has to leave. And it is only now that we find out that Tim is terminally ill, via an exterior shot showing that he lives in a cancer clinic. It’s a gut punch, especially when we see a report from the Bugle about a request Tim made to see his hero before he dies. It’s a perfect moment for Peter as a character. Despite all his self-doubt, all his responsibilities, he was willing to take time to visit a dying child, just because it was the right thing to do. Lotus of course completely squanders this by having the reveal immediately, and having Peter be an idiot throughout the whole visit. Great, awesome.

I seriously despise Spider-Man Lotus with a burning passion. I don't care if it's a fan film, it deserves to be criticize like every other things in the world and I ain't afraid to say my dislikes about it. The film was way too mature, dark, serious and gritty for my taste, especially for a Spider-Man film. It was even boring. What I hate the most about this fan film is the fact that Gavin(a freaking 18 or 19 year old teen who is clearly inexperience of filmmaking and writing)admitted that the main reason why this spider man fan film was made in the first place is just so he can prove to everyone that he somehow "understands objectively better" than Jon Watts Spider Man and that it was a fan film that's superior to all other fan films. That alone is so childish and pathetic. He even acts like his film was made for the "true" Spider-Man fans only. Like seriously, he doesn't need to prove that he's better than someone who is a professional filmmaker or a group of people who make fan films. And he definitely does not get to decide what is the true definitive version of Spider-Man is, since you know... there is no true/objectively definitive spider-man. As a huge Spider-Man fan, I really love Jon Watts' Spider Man trilogy and I consider it the best spider-man movie trilogy and best superhero trilogy ever in my opinion, but that is just my opinion, it's completely subjective and I don't care if anyone disagrees with me. I don't care if Gavin hates mcu spider man, it's his own opinion, but for him to make his very own Spider-Man film just so he could rival other filmmakers or fan films just because he can or that he doesn't like any of their work, is just 100% childish, Gavin really comes off as a bratty teenager, he clearly isn't mature enough to show respect to others and to be ready in filmmaking and writing. He needs to rethink his behavior and try get some help from others.

Excellent video. I remember doing a handful of drama "films" when I was 15. I was my own harshest critic, and when I compared my finished work to the classic films that inspired me at the time, I could tell it wasn't holding up. I kept the finished films on KZfaq for a while, but eventually I set them all to private. I only had my friends from school to work with in those days, so I adjusted my approach to filmmaking and took the most successful aspect of what we were doing and brought that to the forefront: Comedy. Having fun after school. Laughing at ourselves. Physical comedy is the easiest thing in the world, and it makes for some hillarious material if used right. All those videos still hold up. They're easy to watch and they're a fun showcase of just how far we were willing to push ourselves in front of the camera at the time, and the narratives we were exploring rarely required any dialogue - instead we let music do the talking, and it was original music composed by another one of my friends from school. It was show don't tell, and it aged like wine. The drama stuff? I keep all that to myself as a reminder that I wasn't ready. I agree with everything you said. This movie felt really insulting of how bad this is. I even tried to edit this movie, thinking that i could fix this mess by shortening it and taking the necessary scenes to make sense of it. It's like in the movie Ratatouille when Remy was fixing the soup that linguini ruined, and he felt the need to fix it, even though it's not Remy's problem. But there is one thing that i have to disagree with in your review, is what you said about the Spider-Man suit. imo, I think the suit looks great on the set photos, because they used proper lighting. But the actor in the suit and the lighting and everything in the movie makes this suit look boring and cheap because of it. Like if this same suit was used and shot in a Hollywood setting, like with good lighting, and actors who know what their doing in a suit like this, you'll probably wouldn't even say that it is cosplay looking. As a technically "older" fan (I'm 31 lol), it's hard to be mad at it. The writer/director was like 17 making this. It's an example of something that shouldn't have had the hype behind it and eyes on it, but it did because the internet is just like that. As a 17 year old's first movie, it's pretty dang good. If this does anything for him towards doing bigger things, it's an excellent start. Most creative's out here would shudder to have their very first work revisited by millions.

Didn't expect a Spider Man Lotus video here. I mainly retained this movie for it "developpement hell", then it came out of my mind for a LONG while until the movie came out (I thought the movie would have been canceled or stayed stuck in production limbo tbh). I vibe with the usage of the 1960's Spidey frame on the thumbnail btw. I want to propose as video subjects (and potential pallet clensers); -Vampire Hunter D (the novels and/or the animated movies). The one I'm the most familiar with (as in, I watched the 2 animated movie at least 1 or twice and vibe with the aesthetic of the Yoshitaka Amano illustrations of the novels) -Spawn -The Maxx (even if it's more mysticysm than horror) and maybe other Image comic joints. -Bibliomania (A manga about a girl inside trying to get out of a book) -Those Frankenstein sequel comics. -Devil Man -Valiant' comics Shadow Man. -Maybe Strangehaven too? But I don't even think it really qualify. Just so you know about Strangehaven (if it ain't already done.). This is like the Superman Returns of Spider-Man movies. A boring-as-hell SUPERHERO movie where every room is horribly lit and everybody just mopes around.

one thing that baffles me from spider-man fans (and by extension, superman fans) it's the "less action, more character" shit. no, a movie does not work like that. you have to make the audience feel engaged and at the edge of the seat when you're making a superhero movie. the movie needs to be interesting. the raimi trilogy, logan and the batman had plenty of action and they were character driven stories at the same time, it's like if for them those two things can't work at the same time lol. that's one big problem for spider-man lotus. i know that the budget was not that big, but then delete the pointless scenes and get some fight choreographers.

I personally didn’t find the film that bad. Personally, the death of a loved one hit hard and I felt it was well done. However, the lack of action was very insanely boring and while I like the soap opera aspect of Spider-Man’s life. The dragging aspect was awful. That’s my opinion on the plot and attempting to separate the person from the artist. Everything else is another story. Considering everything I mentioned and more I’d probably give it a 5/10. Not unwatchable has good moments but drags way too much.

So what’s the controversy?

I once had a friend who's idea for the dramatic was to focus the scene on a character spending 10 minutes standing in place, in a cool pose. Appreciating how that bit may have been an exaggeration by the writer for effect, still, the very idea of me as the viewer having to sit there and watch an entire ten minutes of nothing in particular happening got the biggest laugh out of me, much to my poor buddy's chagrin. The description of the movie being reviewed by this video reminds me of nearly 2 hours of that ten minute scene. The way the guy who produced Lotus allegedly expresses himself indicates to me that he's immersed in the enjoyment of telling the story, without realizing that he's the only one having fun.

So basically this movie is the student fan film equivalent of the flash movie? Horrible controversies and the bastardazation of a beloved comic story

What's the controversy?

Controversy aside, and my genuine take is I think it's... Okay. A 4.5 or 5/10. As a hollywood quality film? God no. Well, there's a few impressive scenes but it has a plethora of problems. A lot of people forget this is a fan film though and a directors first film. In my mind - I think high school project and to that extent, I think it runs middle of the road. The biggest problems are the script and runtime. It's too long, there are some character issues, it DRAGS in parts. The soundtrack is good as well. Actually, really good. BUT, I have seen fan films and series that run upwards of 4 HOURS and are significantly worse and lower quality. Maybe my standards were lowered after viewing fan films significantly worse than this but, that's just my personal opinion. It's not good, but it's also not the worst thing I've ever seen like some people have reacted. The thing I realized is fan films are the best when they're 15 minutes with a simple premise. This has a simple premise, Spiderman overcoming sadness. What it should have been was a 20 minute short film where the main dialogue scene was Peter talking to the kid. Short. Sweet. Simple. I understand making a film is difficult, hell I'm having trouble making my own, even when I have people and friends willing to help make it. It requires planning, scheduling, and a whole heap of effort. The VFX and soundtrack departments by far have the best talent, and again it's the script that's the issue and runtime. I'm not mad, just disappointed but there is... Much, much worse out there. (Also, the Green Goblin mask is literally a latex mask in the comics and when people mean the best spiderman suit, I think that's in concept and general design. Just, figured I'd add to that too.)

I didn't know the issues behind the scenes stuff because I'm not on Twitter or I care. I saw the trailer few years back and the movie just drop on my recommendation tab so I watched it. Quit at 58 min mark because it was painfully awful and unwatchable. Edit: a small critic on you. I don't think saying don't support the person in the future for anything is a nice thing to say. so what should he do? Delete himself? Making films is clearly his passion. I get it the movie is unwatchable and the guy has an ego and his racist. But I do believe in people and I do believe that if a person can realise what he/she did and is genuinely ashamed of himself/herself they CAN change. I don't support the guy. It's mean to say but the actors/actresses aren't very attractive to look at, especially not for nearly 2 hours. Since film is a visual medium, it is hard to see these characters portrayed by average/below average looking people. There's a reason most Hollywood actors can double as models.
