Spider Man PS1 got EVERYTHING Right - A Retrospective

Spider-Man 2000 captures the long-running main universe Spider-Man, with its breadth and depth of content.
Spider-Man 2000 is a time-gate into the classic Amazing Spider-Man comics, and it captures the classic Amazing Spider-Man better than any game, before it or after. With that said, it’s a special game to me. It lets me uncork that lightning in a bottle and feel its spark.
I want to take a look back at this game. I want to look into how it captures the feeling of the comics, in its story and game design, and how its creative use of gameplay mechanics does so much to make the game feel constantly fresh and exciting.
Join me in this retrospective essay of Spider-Man 2000, and how it holds that Spider-Man spark.

I'm so glad I grew up with this game. I would always play the demo version over and over at home, and go to my cousin to play the full version. The game ended at Carnage for me, because Monster Ock scared the shit out of me, and still kinda does. I always asked my cousin to play that level lmao. We would just stock up on snacks, drinks and play this game over and over on various difficulties and with What If mode, trying to beat Venom on Hard. Good times.

When this game came out it was an amazing test of the ps1 and the players ability. The ending was great and it felt like an accomplishment to finish this game. Truly a feat for both the creators and those who beat it.

Ngl this feels like a gem even tho it looks so outdated, i specialy love that despite the limitations devs had they used criativity and imagination to bring out the best product they could . . . Great video man keep it up

To be fair, the freaks Venom was referring to were a mad scientist bent on making everyone into drones and the other was Cletus Kassidy. Venom could certainly never call Spider-Man a freak, but I think he played this card in the one scenario where he'd be correct, heheheheheh! Fantastic video for a fantastic Four--I mean, fantastic game! Just as you were able to spot how similar this game is to comics of its time, this game is what changed me from someone who mistakenly thought Spider-Man started off as a cartoon into a comic fan. Neversoft really lived up to their ambition of bringing the comics to the PS1!

I really liked this game, spent hours and hours beating it multiple times. Ultimate Spider Man remains my all time favorite, but this one is close second.

Love the action figure comparison. Was playing this just this week for the first time after many many years. And honestly I was kinda surprised how many ideas it already had that kinda became a staple of spiderman games, like the chase sequences. Oh it's clearly a product of it's time but it certainly is spiderman in it's puresest form and I just love it. Also may I say how much I miss the era of unlockables? Like yeah, there is a cheat for cosmic spiderman, but going through hardmore with the black suit, learning some skills you did not even knew you have, feels very rewarding.

Great video! I played the game at the time, and while I didn't read the comics I was a fan of the 90's cartoon (which I also highly recommend, I think that it pairs well with the game). The Monster Ock (and carnage in general) terrified me as a child, that chase sequence was so tense and I wasn't a particularly good gamer so it was a challenge. I don't remember the game having that good of a story, but the rogue's gallery, hero cameos, and set piece sequences made me want to play it again and again.

I love this game, and sometimes I wonder what a remake of it would look like, with, or without the same exact controls. While I know the story in this game is more light-hearted, and isn't trying to take itself too seriously which I'll give a pass, the game has said that basically the whole ground level of New York City is covered in gas (it's really quite above ground level, being about half the size of most of the tall buildings in NYC from cutscenes) yet during the Rnino and first Venom boss fight there is no toxic green gas. And after the Monster Ock Chase, Doc Ock's base explodes, and while I know Spider-Man was in danger and at the moment had to think for himself, he left Cletus Kasady to blow up to his death lol. But yeah pretty good game, and from that line of you having played a few horror titles, have you ever played any of Resident Evil games? They're pretty good, and highly recommend you play them

Those are some fair points! I agree, a remake would be super interesting to see. I don’t have too much familiarity with RE! I played some Raccoon City which I know is a terrible place to start lol. I hope to play RE4 remake soon

@@calvinfishermedia Nice, I recommend you play Resident Evil 1 (2002 remake), Resident Evil 2 (1998 original and 2019 remake), and Resident Evil 4 (2005 original and remake), ofc that's 5 games with two of them being remakes of another two, but nonetheless I say maybe give them a try after RE 4 remake and see if you like those. The original main trilogy games have tank controls and a fixed camera angle and focus much more on the survival horror aspect, while both of the RE 4's focus more on the action side with bits of horror every now and then. Nice video as always though 👍

One thing I never understood was how does the fog affect the self for symbiosis. Was it gonna knock everyone out and the symbiotes from the generators would take the unconscious body as a host? Did it alter the body to prepare for symbiosis? Like what was the fog doing.

Definitely a fair point! I don’t think there is ever a clear answer. I think it’s mainly a justification for the game’s low draw distance haha

@@calvinfishermedia yeah i love that they used it to address limitations. And as you said in the vid it really gives the game a visual flair i mean everyone who played this game remembers the fog. I just wondered after so many years what it did to assist in the process. I also loved your point about action figures because as I play this game as an adult this game feels exactly like the kind of made up spiderman story i’d make while playing with my old action figures as a kid.
