There’s another hobgoblin room inside an abandoned crane in one of the first few levels of Spider-Man 2000! I played that game so much as a kid

I had both this and the previous game and this one had a lot more night time levels. I remember finding it a bit spooky, playing the night time train level bits at night time

Fun Fact: We were going to get a third installment with Green Goblin as the main villain. Green Goblin wasn't used in the two ps1 games due to Sony forbidding neversoft from using him because of the upcoming Raimi movie. He was going to be used for the third game as the main antagonist but the success of the Raimi movie got the third planned installment cancelled in favor of a Raimi tie-in game, where assets and animations and story elements from the unreleased third game were used for the first Raimi game. Spidey's attacks are all reused animations from the ps1 games. The web dome, web ball, web gloves, and yank are all reused. The Spidey compass also returns as a reuse. Also, we were supposed to get Kraven and Vulture in the third game, since they never appeared in the ps1 games yet, but were used instead for the Raimi game (with kraven being exclusive to the Xbox version).

Fun fact: the reason Thor is mentioned is because originally he was meant to show up in a cutscene after the Hyper Electro boss fight but was cut due to the 9/11 incident and there were also a lot more stuff cut from what I heard

Kinda wish we got a third game which I imagine would be on the ps2 due to the fact that the Spider man movie game uses a similar gameplay which makes me wonder if the movie game was originally supposed to be a third game

I always remember skipping Shocker and the bomb-keycard level when replaying this. The costume-ability mixing way before the PS4 one was cool

Fun fact: you can troll shocker by pulling him with the web, then jump and punch em, and if he uses an attack, use web gloves, it makes you invincible from the shock wave.

Although not as strongly as its predecessor, my love for this game is still noticeable. Less "love like a truck driven by Venom" and more "love like a dune buggy driven by The Shocker." I liked that the game had at least two levels where you could go from rooftop to ground (not including the Danger Room endless mode) and actually got a strong kick out of the bosses and that level where you climb up the tunnel to get to Electro...but yeah, it just didn't feel as "big" as the first one and I don't just mean that it was shorter. The first game's conspiracy wasn't given away from the start, it made more cinematic use of its locations with the fog, had more interesting locations (though, the sequel's museum is pretty cool) and had cameos from a wider range of characters (to say nothing of using all of its villains and not letting Beetle off scot-free). I still think Shocker is prime "First Boss Material," loved the Lizard fight and thought Sandman was pretty creative...but yeah, Electro is not a leading man (even back then, I thought it weird that Norman wasn't in either of these games), none of the stages feel like quite as big a deal as they did in the first game and it's very hard to go from Venom and Carnage to Hammerhead without feeling a little bit of mood-drop (nothing against Hammerhead...but he's not Venom and Carnage). I will say, however, that I loved how this game handled Shocker (he might be a goon, but he's competent and ruthless) and Beetle's one line in the game ("Times change, Spider-Man.") always stuck with me for some reason, even though I didn't know who Abner Jenkins was until a while later, let alone why Spider-Man was surprised to see him fall back into crime...I mean, those are two incredibly-small things, but they stuck with me, so now someone had to hear about them.

The Beetle was such a weird part of this game. I had no context for his appearance, and it was especially weird seeing him in three cutscenes with a whopping one voice line and no entry in the character viewer. Really weird.

As a kid, this game was my introduction to Spider-Man in general, so I have something of a soft spot for it. I remember beating it and really enjoying the overall vibe it gave me. Of course, then I played the first game not long after and only a few minutes into it, I could tell it was on a whole other level. It just had a lot of personality and charm that just didn't carry over into the second game. Still, 2 had its moments. I thought the Electro fights were neat, and I remember the Lizard fight being kinda scary and tense.

Plane Level was always the hardest

Other changes that happened after the 9/11 attacks, some cutscenes had to be edited and missions had their name changed from "Crash Flight" to "Wind Tunnel" and the final mission was supposed to take place on the twin towers. There is a pre 9/11 version of the game on youtube.

What was up with Sandman's design? Looks like he tanned his face in the hot blazing sun and forgot to tan the rest of his body. Should've been a consistent skin tone instead of a sandy-tone of colored texture on everywhere but his head. Anyway, it happened and it is what it is.

goblin is canonically dead in the 2000 universe

I honestly think the real reason they didn't use Green Goblin was because the movie was in production and Goblin was already going to be in that movie, plus the chances of that movie having a tie-in game where you fight Goblin was inevitable anyway. But I will admit that they still could have used the likes of Kingpin, Hobgoblin, and Kraven in this game. As for why this game was a PS1 exclusive, It was because the N64 and Dreamcast were dying consoles back in 2001. They were both set for retirement when this game was being made. Plus the PS2 was backwards compatible with PS1 games and the PS1 was already the most commonly owned game console by 2001 to begin with. Hence why we were still getting PS1 games into the year 2002. But I will also admit that the reason for not giving this game a PC version is un-forgivable.

I went and picked up some copies of both games the other month and played them for the first time in over 15 years. Is it just me or is the 2nd game significantly harder than the 1st one? Much love!

I feel like the second game has a much more cohesive story like- it flows better, so much of the first is unrelated to the main plot and there's just a lot of stuff that doesn't make sense, like- why the hell are symbiotes infesting the Bugle? Why the fuck is Mysterio chilling in the basement? How did Rhino play into the overall scheme? What purpose did nabbing Black Cat have? Like- she only exists to get help so there's a way for Spidey to escape at the end otherwise there's no real narrative reason for Ock to abduct her and keep her captive. And like- Spidey isn't even actively looking for her once she is. Venom taking over Lizard's base is solely done so there's baddies and even as a kid it felt kind of weird. Like yeah I definitely agree it has way more charm and a better rogue's gallery, but I personally feel like they all connect really poorly vs the second game where every rogue has a purpose and one event leads right into the next nothing feels like- a forced side quest. I agree though Electro is kind of an odd pick as the leader of a group, but also they kind of blew their load on the first game, like outside Green Goblin there's not that many other iconic rogues they could have used I feel like. I think it's solid, just unfortunately lacks like a really good heavy hitter, heck even Hobgoblin would have worked. I mean I could have even seen Kraven as a great choice, but instead he's just only referenced. I think they could have ditched Hammerhead and Beetle for Kraven and Goblin who could have been like partners mirroring Carnage and Ock and the game would like automatically be more memorable or heck like I said Goblin and Kraven, HECK GG and HG would have been SICK and you could have pulled from the animated show and have them plotting to betray the other once they defeated Spidey and had that tie into the final fight.

I really think Sandman would have been a better mastermind, think of the title I mean "Enter Sandman" it could work. Like that one song, I forget the name.

While I did enjoy this game a lot, mainly because of the suit/power upgrades, I find this review to be quite fair and accurate. It wasn't as good as the first game by a long shot. I don't know how long I spent learning how to work the web-based attacks so I could have an easier time with some of the enemies/levels. Still enjoyed it, though.

I think the first game was better when it came to the gameplay and cast. But this game is better as far as music if nothing else. The music in this game is some of the best music I've ever heard in videogames

For as good as SM 2000 is, just as crap Enter Electro is. Horrendous difficulty spikes. And a way less interesting story and less interesting villains overall.
