It was because they did not want it to take away from their single player experiences. That, and the fact that live service multiplayer games based around superheroes have not been received well in recent years. Marvel's Avengers and Suicide Squad being the two prime examples. Alas, I'm a bit disappointed that The Great Web got canned, but at the same time, I understand why Sony pulled the plug on it.

I honestly feel this was canceled because Sony was trying to force Insomniac into shifting gears into a live-service title. Same thing happened to Factions 2 over at Naughty Dog

I wanna draw your attention to the “Be Greater… Together” slogan. They used that for Spider-Man 2, so this game and trailer were likely made before SM2 and the removal of the Chrysler building.

It definitely would have come out half-baked though. That's what invariably happens when publishers demand a developer make what's popular instead of what they're good at. See Suicide Squad.

This definitely looks like a dlc game mode for Spider-Man 2. They should just convert all the progress they have into couch co-op so they don’t have to pay for live service for a game that is basically left for dead. Besides, you can see there’s like millions of re-used assets. For a Spider-Verse styled game it’s literally what I just said, an extension of Spider-Man 2 and it’s mechanic’s. All they have to do is add some polishes and remove the amount of players.

I can see this type of game mode being offered in SM3, with Silk being teased at the end of SM2 it isn’t out of the realm of possibility that they’ll add other spider people as well. 4 player lobbies where you don’t choose your spider person would be a win for me.

If this was an online multiplayer it was prolly cut for draw distance issues or other glaring issues cause having 5 spider characters swinging in several different places far from eachover sounds quite intensive, and something tells me server lag would possibly be another issue.

I don't know something about this just seems fanmade with mods. I'm going frame by frame to attempt to prove it's mods cause like I've seen those suits before on Nexus PC Mods and stuff. Something about it just seems fanmade-ish if that makes sense? Like it doesn't have that "official" feel to it. Usually Insomniac Trailers have lots of cutscenes in the trailers whereas this "trailer" doesn't have any cutscenes. The only "cutscenes" it has are just camera mode shots of the spider-men landing here and there. Plus Yuri's voice just doesn't feel like Yuri's. If anything it just seems like highly edited gameplay. I've seen a "multiple" spider-man gameplay footage before Spider-Man 2 came out or was even thought of and it looked exactly like this. Plus why are the portals a different color? They're not orange and purple they're more so green. Just things aren't adding up necessarily for this to be an official trailer for me. As some people have pointed out live service games and in this case ones based around super heroes have not done particularly well. I would think that despite being run by some very talented people that Insomniac would probably struggle to keep the game up to date. But if you guys think they can pull it off feel free to petition them, I won't stand in your way as a naysayer.

This was probably planned to be live service only and they knew it wasn't sustainable. With the hatred people had over SSquad, they probably didn't wanna risk it.
