Loved the video very informative! I always draw blanks on questions that I am asked, so some sample answers or a way to sound more marketable to where you are applying (not just internships but also for grad school) would be a great video.

Wow that sounds crazy 😳 I'm going for school counseling and our internship process isn't like that at all! We have a coordinator who places us and takes into consideration our top choices. However, the clinical MH cohort has to apply to different practices, BUT our professors have compiled a spreadsheet for them about all the different places to consider contacting, as well as pros/cons etc! My SC cohort has a spreadsheet too that helped us choose schools based on previous interns' experience. So you're not crazy, that whole process sounds like it could be way more supportive. But thank you for sharing these tips with us!! That podcast sounds like it'll be really helpful as well 😊

Very informative. I agree, it has been a very stressful process. Finishing my second semester of practicum now and got an email today to interview for a position for internship in a county near me for the 2021-2022 school year.

I remember how stressful it was to find an internship! I found that going to teacher job fairs was helpful. Here in California, we have a school staff hiring website called edjoin. It's pretty reliable and helpful when it came to finding an internship. Unfortunately when my internship was coming in to an end contract wise, I had to go through the same process of finding another place.

It will be tough when we go through a similar process AGAIN to land a job! I really hope I can put in the work during internship and *hopefully* receive an offer from the same county. I wish the process could be a little more streamlined for each state or something to help out students!

Hello! First I just wanted to say that I LOVE your videos and that I am so happy I found you. I am currently a psych undergrad and I wanted your opinion on whether you should go straight to grad school after graduating or if it would be better to spend a year or two working?
@TiffanyLee
@TiffanyLee 4 жыл бұрын
this is a tough question! I thought spending a few years working before grad school worked for me because I got to build up my experience and save money for school. My friends, however, went straight to grad school and they are doing fine! I would love to make a video about this!

Hi Tiffany! Can you do a video on your experience with Practicum Hours? How was your process in finding a placement? What did you do during your practicum? I am in the process of fulfilling my practicum hours right now and I’m feeling very confused and discouraged.

I would love to share my practicum experiences! Thanks for the video idea :D my program was very helpful in the practicum placement process and we had structured classes to guide our experiences. I've spoken to students in other programs that do not have that kind of system in place for them. I'll be happy to share some tips for practicum.

Tiffany Lee Yes thank you! My program, the students are required to find our own placements and during this pandemic it has been so stressful lol. I received so many “no, I can’t take on practicum students right now.” However, luckily I was able to find a placement. I was also wondering, if you had any bad experiences with your placements that you could share with us too and how you were able to deal with it (clashes with different personalities, feeling like they don’t want to help you etc)... I would love to hear all about it.

Hey great advice about internships. This semester I plan to start at a School Psych program. What are your thoughts on conditionally approved School Psych programs?
@TiffanyLee
@TiffanyLee 4 жыл бұрын
My first answer is always to choose a program that is NASP approved. Typically, when there are conditions, programs are working on an aspect of the program to become NASP approved. I would reach out to the school and find out if they plan to receive approval in the time you're in the program. Although I've heard of people who practice without attending a NASP approved program, it's less common and you'll have to go through some extra tests or credentials

Wait! As a undergrads in Psyc, I have a question! Can you become a school psychologists with a PsyD in clinical psych or do you need to take a specific degree in school psych?
@TiffanyLee
@TiffanyLee 4 жыл бұрын
From my understanding, you need a specific degree in school psychology because they specialize in school organization, classroom management, etc. This may differ from state to state but I think you would need/want training specific to a school setting to have a deeper understanding and training of your role. Check out www.nasponline.org/about-school-psychology/selecting-a-graduate-program/a-career-in-school-psychology-frequently-asked-questions for more information on clinical v school psych! hope this helps

Having gone through both a specialist level and doctoral level internship I can totally agree with some of your points. I found it stressful and confusing on both accounts. In the defense of the school district (been on the other side as well), there is a TON of bureaucratic tape to go through and it's just easier sometimes to be like "Just let them come to us." However, I do feel that a systemic change is necessary but not on a national level like AAPIC (which is a freaking nightmare). I think that individual universities should partner with schools in their area for sure and maybe some out of their home state. For instance, in Texas school districts are DESPERATE for interns but they lack the communication with universities in the area and this is such an easy fix. Anyways keep promoting school psych stuff! Great work.
@TiffanyLee

Even some statewide guidelines could really help streamline the process for students but it doesn't benefit the school districts so they probably won't. Thank you for shedding some more light on the process. I'm feeling validated and not crazy :D

Do school psychology programs care what undergrad major you have? I am currently majoring in Music Education and Psychology but I am thinking that majoring in Psychology and minoring in Educational Psychology might be better? Or at least making Educational Psychology my minor and keeping my Music Education major (a requirement for becoming a Music Therapist which is another career I'm considering)
@TiffanyLee
@TiffanyLee 4 жыл бұрын
Music therapy is amazing!! Many programs prefer a bachelor's in psychology since it meets all of the prerequisites for the grad program BUT it really depends on the program so I would reach out to a few that you're interested in to get an idea of what you need to fulfill. Ed psych is more research based so if you would like to become a practitioner, that may not be exactly what you're looking for. Hope that helps!
