Spin Twin Axle Caravans With Ease - Look - My Amazing Turntable!

Something different today - my fabrication of a turntable for our Twin Axle Caravan....rean on..
Since having a twin axle we have found turning around to be very difficult even with the twin motor movers.
By the simple science of things to spin like a single axle puts huge side pressure on the tyres which really isn't good for them!
A recent driveway change also meant that we could no longer turn the caravan around using the neighbours (father-in-laws) entrance and the drive was actiually narrower than the caravan is long.
A calculation showed that the one gap leading to the front door was a wide enough area to turn it but it would have to properly spin to do it.
I looked at driveway turntables and they were hitting 5 figures even for manual ones so I set about designing my own.
This video is the fabrication and testing of it.
A long video I know but shows the full process and very gentle first test of it. We also moved the van around a little to minimise things for the first test.
We neededn't have worried though as it performd perfectly with just one alteration needed to clear the rear motor mover cross bar.
In future we will be able to drive straight to the end of the drive, pop the turntable in place, reverse the caravan on and spin it around.
I hope you enjoy the journey with us - I am very pleased with the result and it looks very smart in the black finoih with the silver fittings.
I used two 230mm x 75mm and two 100mm x 50mm mild steel channel, a 4.5t turntable, four 400kg castors, two 34mm steady legs and a Maypole 50mm hitch.
I also had a heavy weight dolly to help move the frame around and to pull the carava when on the turntable.

While some have been technically critical, it's always worth remembering that innovative ideas, together with trial and error, are the bedrock of many of the classic designs we've become accustomed to. The kind of thinking we need to return to to revitalise the economy here. Rare that a Mk 1.0 solution has everything right first time. And as an associated thought... it is a shame for the longevity of caravans as a living concept, especially now that new-build houses seem to have less space to park a caravan or even get near the house. Keep thinking and making!

I've seen larger turn tables for cars set into a drive flush with the ground surface, I think it was one that allowed one person to easily push the car around, but just as easy to fit an electric motor to turn it at the push of a button.

Yes, I looked at those first but they cost 10 times what this cost me to put together and as it only gets used a handful of times per year I couldn't bring myself to spend that sort of money. Thanks for watching

@modellermark2 We switched from a single to twin axle last year and our drive is wide enough for 2 caravans. We could park the single axle on the far side of the drive creating "privacy" from the neighbour. Can't do that with the twin axle as I found when trying to spin it on its axis the first time we got home with it. Interesting to see the effort you went to with the "rotator"...well done. Notice none of the replies asking why don't you reverse it the length of a football pitch with barely inches to the sides have taken you up on your offer for them to come and show you how it's done....that would have been a great follow up video!

@@M..R.... Yes, I had drones and tripods at the ready for those videos but no takers as yet 😂. I have tried the 2 buttons togther too but it won't do it and I hate seeing how much pressure the tyres are under. I am happy with my device and I can do it single handed easily now without even using the dolly to turn it.

Well done, just a thought, maybe have a stop on the back end of the channel so the van can’t go back further than you want it to.

Just out of curiosity, couldn’t you just drive it backwards on the driveway? It looked that the street was nearby

Thanks for watching and the question. The road is a single track lane and we can only just get the caravan off going forwards - as much as I like to think I am decent at handling it I wouldn't risk it all down the lane then into the driveway in reverse 😁👍

I have had a very varied career! My first job was helping out at my fathers factory as a driver ... but ended up learning the full sheet metal work and fabrication trade when I wasn't delivering. Lots of useful skills were gleaned there 😊That combined with my modelling, 3D Printing / CAD work did the rest after which it was just sourcing the materials to fit my design. I am sure it is over engineered and could have been a bit lighter but I wasn't going to risk my caravan on anything less - and we couldn't go away again until I turned it around 😂 Thanks for watching!

tbh great job but with a few practise reverses i`m sure that is possible unless its the camera lens.with the car. love your van we have the end bathroom version.

Honestly, there are only a couple of inches either side when drivng out forwards. I wouldn't want to risk my van with any practice reverses but I have put the offer out there that if anyone wants to bring their van down and have a go they are welcome as it will make a great video. I do explain that in the video but firstly very sharp turns put huge strain on the tyres with a twin axle (my old single axle could spin on a sixpence) and secondly the driveway is so narrow now that the caravan overhangs a drop to turn around so would have to go very close to the drop to turn on the movers.

Very expensive, you can use the motor movers to do exactly the same thing. If you are worried about your tyres on tarmac , spray or place water under the tyres, it spins easily.

Thanks for watching. As you can see it is gravel not tarmac and to turn it here would mean going over the edge of the drop between the drive and the path to the front door. At 35:20 you can see where the wheels would be and that is a big drop down there. My single axle would have been fine and maybe your movers are different but I don't like the excessive strain on the wheels and tyres when spinning on the spot - not that we actually have room here to do it anyway. Compared to a comercial turntable it was pretty cheap - not much more than a new set of 4 tyres - so I am happy with it and it makes life very easy now as I can spin it single handed in a few minutes with no risk to the caravan.

couldn’t you just reverse the caravan up the drive ?

The driveway is tight and the road is single track. I can only just drive it in and out forwards - my reversing skills aren't up to trying to reverse it 100 yards down a single track and then into the drive - I know it wouldn't end well 😂 Thanks for watching and your question 👍

Why didn’t you just read the powertouch instructions and press two opposite buttons at the same time? Don’t think your insurance will cover you on a heath robinson contraption that hasn’t been designed and tested properly

Please don`t be offended by this but having been in engineering all my life i feel i have to comment, the frame once in position should not move back at all but only turn as the caravan is spun, just a suggestion fit retractable casters that lift up or even removable ones that you can lift up or take off then once in place the frame will not move just spin, this is meant to be a constructive comment not an offensive comment at all.

Not a problem with you comment and thanks for watching. I Agree that the frame shouldn't move once the caravan is perfectly balanced in the centre but while moving it onto and off the frame it will and as for getting one balanced perfectly side to side I am not sure how I would acheive that. The castors do not touch the ground but are a cm above as a "just in case" measure. They need to be fixed as there is no scope for them to able to lift up as they are under the wheel slots. In theory they shouldn't be needed but I added them just to give a level of comfort should I move it back to far or anything else move / go out of balance. As a result I did the whole move single handed last time I had to turn the van around and it was a piece of cake. Thanks again for the comment and watching.

Have you ever tried doing that on a twin axle caravan? I wouldn't have though it was possible or safe with how the suspension and everything works on a twin axle as well as overloading the remaining axle?

Sorry you feel that way but I am fine at reversing. You can't see the entrance to my driveway in the video but it is off a single track lane with cambers. It is just possible to get the caravan out when driven out but with just a couple of inches to spare so I see no point in risking trying to reverse it 50m down the lane and then into the driveway. If your van is the same size as mine and you want to bring it down and show me how to do it then I am more than happy to watch and learn. Thanks for watching.

Sorry you feel like that - it is only just possible to get the caravan out of the driveway due to the stone walls that lead to the narrow single track lane leading to our driveway - so I guess yes, it should be possible, but with it so tight to even get it out I wouldn't want to risk my van reversing it 50+m down a single track lane and then into the driveway with only inches to spare. My choice but I see no point taking such a risk.

The same offer goes out to yourself as to the others that said that - if you want to come and bring your equivalent sized twin axle down and show me the technique of reversing down the 50m single track lane and into the tight driveway then I am happy to watch and learn - I will even video it and put it on my channel to help others. But currently as it has just inches to spare coming out forwards I am not prepared to risk damaging my van in reverse.
