New shorter, edited version with music: • "The Last Ride": Spina...
7/27/2011... I had been in whistler for about four weeks at this point. I had been riding everyday and had apparently become a little too confident. I end up riding Fade to Black, the wreck happens on Karate Monkey just by the A-line bridge. I was only paralyzed for a few hours from my nipples down, then luckily everything came back more or less. I had a spinal surgery about six months after the wreck and haven't been able to ride since, but holding hope for 2013!
Special thanks to the Whistler EMTs, Ambulance Service, ER Clinic and everybody that helped me out that day.

I grew up as a gymnast and athlete doing all kinds of crazy things. December of 2022 I did a flip into a foam pit, something I had done hundreds of times, but landed slightly on my neck. Now I’m a c6 quadriplegic. Crazy how resilient yet fragile we are.

I fell last year and nearly broke my neck, was laying in the woods for a half hour in pain, my buddy fell 2 days ago and he also hurt his neck bad. We are done going fast downhill. These crashes are for real and you don't even have to go fast to get hurt bad.

@@jeffreysisti6653 I was going 7 mph on a perfectly smooth trail on my way to the parking lot after riding at a local MTB park. Zoned out, hit a boulder, fell, separated my shoulder and tore the joint. Took a surgery and almost a year of physical therapy before I could ride again. Not the same as a neck injury but just shows how little it takes to cause a severe and dangerous problem. Glad you made it, can't imagine how scary that must have been lying in the woods with a broken neck.

just shows that it only has to be one little mistake, and a not so spectacular crash, to result in a huge injury. Sometimes I question whether the risk of severe physical injury, is really worth the buzz when doing downhill riding, because lets face it, that crash could happen to anybody at any given time.

@@mdc123-v2v Yeah you are right mate. I packed in this sport last summer after a bad crash. I've had far worse crashes prior that have resulted in needing surgeries. But my last crash was the final straw. I realised after that my health was more important than an adrenaline rush.

@@DaveJenvey I feel you. Me too. 36 now and after witnessing my best friend shatter his femur, break 4 ribs and his clavicle in a low speed wipe I packed it in last year. It's all fun and games when you're young and have no fear or responsibility but when you're older things change. Traded in my NP Reactor for a Digger and go XC bike packing instead - I get to enjoy the scenery, camp, take photos and play with the drone, all without the risk of serious injury. A lot of people will tell you it's completely possible to MTB and not get injured, but with every trail center pushing super gnar tracks to compensate with the fast aggro FS frames people are riding it's not a question of "if" you get hurt, but "when".

This video isn't what I expected since the dude riding is clearly pretty good and did some drops most average trail riders would consider really big. But the section of the course the accident happened looks pretty similar to what a lot of average riders might encounter on a trail ride. I think what it boils down to is that the spine and neck are fragile and you can land wrong doing something pretty mild and end up with a severe injury.

My heart goes out to you. Mu girlfriend died from a riding accident. I hope I can help with some ideas: Protective spinal body gear needs to be created. The trails and need to be more strictly regulated. Dirt shifts and changes with every pass, thus it changes your racing lines and balance. One little pebble can change everything. Riders of all levels need to always do a pace walk and inspection of the track before each ride, and for to better visualize each sector, so they have no doubt, to increase safety. Tracks need to be carefully analyzed top down, for the worst to least dangerous sections and adjusted accordingly or prohibited.

Man, this footage made me almost sick to my stomach because I just had a fall back in September and I am just now getting full use of my shoulder back. I say that I almost felt sick because it isn't how violent the crash is. It is how easily he was able to injure himself so severely, based on what looked like very cautious riding. All it took was a slip of his back wheel, and he was down. (I guess maybe his bike see hit his spine?) Man that puts things into perspective. Please get better, and I hope you have made much progress since the top posting about a year prior to my posting this.

Yeah, it's pretty rare. Football players sometimes get a similar thing called "stingers", where the nervous system is shocked by a tackle and just shuts off for self preservation. These stingers pass quickly, and are a less severe version of what happened to me. Bruised or crushed nerves, without being severed.

No offense, but every action we take involves risks/injuries. Technically we all could have been paralyzed simply by being a kid and doing dumb shit on the playground. It’s the most natural thing in the world to want some excitement and fun, so I don’t think of this person as being stupid or oblivious. I hope he can pull through this as best he can, without falling into pointless mental excercices like “If only I hadn’t gotten on my bike that day” or “Why did this happen to me?”. The question in life isn’t “Am I going to suffer a lot?”, but “How am I going to cope with all the pain that WILL cross my path?”. It’s an unforeseen test of determination and character, and we all face that test sooner or later. (If you aren’t an adrenaline-junkie, it could very well be a mundane car accident, falling down some stairs, eating unhealthy and having heart problems, etc.) Inner strength doesn’t come from oneliners, platitudes, or rationalizations, it comes from experience and the ability to handle pain.

Been riding dirt motorcycles for years. I feel they are safer because the tires and brakes work better and you can turn quickly , missing trees etc with a throttle blip. Also you have more steel structure absorbing impact. Bicycle people tend to go over the bars head first in a crash, cyclist usually dismount to the side which rarely affects the spine. Good luck to you.

It looks like the primary cause of the injury being severe enough to cause damage was his fall off the edge immediately before his visor caught the tree and yanked his head towards the sky. All of his body weight was falling downwards at the exact moment the tree grabbed his visor and yanked his head upwards. In a split second, 150+ pounds was exerted onto his vertebrae at an angle it wasn't supposed to be at. If he'd ridden off the edge without hitting the tree, he probably would've been OK. This was a very unique and unfortunate accident.

Pretty close, but not exactly what happened. I hit the center of my forehead at the hairline, more or less directly into the tree. The foam in my helmet was completely compressed. My spine experienced hyperextension (arched backwards), and my spinal cord was crushed due to preexisting narrowing in the spine. I actually had no fractures of my spine or otherwise. Just a weird combination of circumstances.

We definitely let ourselves get too comfortable when our confidence gets too high. I blame the helmets. The visor impacts about 10 inches before the torso absorbs the crash. That leaves the neck to take the brunt of the pressure.

I really hope you're doing better now. This is certainly scary to watch as you are obviously a very skilled rider and the injury occurred on a trail that was not anywhere near as difficult as what you'd been riding earlier that day. It looks like your head went straight into the tree. Curious, were you wearing a neck brace when this happened?
@JohnDoe-mc7op

Looks like the injury was caused when you bent your neck on the tree? Or did you have an unlucky fall on a rock?

I've always wondered why I feel way safer on a motorcycle than a bicycle, doesn't matter whether it's on the street or off-road
@daveboothroyd3421
@daveboothroyd3421 2 жыл бұрын
I don't have any stats to compare, but my guess is that if you pushed at the limits of safety so hard as riders do in this style of MTB then bad things would happen more often. On the road I often feel falling off ain't an option. Offroad I recently smashed my ribs up badly coming off at 10mph in the most benign of circumstances.
@francoherrera601
@francoherrera601 2 жыл бұрын
Possible because everyone who rides a mtb will eventually have a crash. I don't know anybody who hasn't. Thankfully it usually isn't worse then a sprain or some bruises
@7x779
@7x779 2 жыл бұрын
@@daveboothroyd3421 I might feel safer and easier to handle a bicycle perhaps up to 10 mph. On or off road, anything above that feels way safer to me on a motorcycle. Off-road, more stability and ability to "push through" soft Terrain. I think better traction and braking ability. And at least 100 times more power to maneuver out of things than a human being pedaling. But I no longer ride to go wild or prove a point to anyone, I just want to explore, trail ride and have Recreation. I think the same applies to the street in a city. A motorcycle is much safer, much more control over your environment, you are a part of the traffic instead of a spindly little Target on the side of the road that can be wiped out by a mere distraction of some driver moving their steering wheel an inch to the right while they're looking at their phone. On a motorcycle, you're in traffic and can watch and observe these things much better, can beep your horn, slow down or accelerate past the Danger

Very sorry this happened. Just goes to show you, on these expert level runs, one small mistake is all it takes. Trees officially do NOT move, at all. My son is expert level and runs these double black diamond runs...it's why my hair is white now...but, he used to race MotoX too, which I think was safer actually! You did it doing something you love, you guys all know the risks and are adults. Sorry about the outcome, hope you can get out on one of those bikes modified for those with paralysis.

This looks like a full axial compound injury caused by hyperflexion/extension. Essentially the spinal column being is compressed by the downward force of the riders helmet. This is the type of injury that a neckbrace is designed to stop or at least mitigate. Did you OTB head first into the tree?
@johnnyvivic8730
@johnnyvivic8730 2 жыл бұрын
If he'd ridden off the edge without hitting the tree, he likely would've been OK. This was a very unique and unfortunate accident.
