cool, that's what i like about the spinning rods you can get them to cast a light lure a good distance.

Thanks mate. My favourite time to target them is first and last light on an incoming tide. When they are in fully you should be able to catch them at any state of the tide from your kayak. last year when they were fully in we were catching them in the tyne from the walkway.

Hi Deric, sorry i didn't see your other message i don't use facebook much mate. I've been using the sonik rockchamp spin rods for a while now the two ive got are rated 1-8g and 3-12g i use a sonik 3000 reel with them.

I usually use a swivel just to prevent any line twist but either way is fine.

Hi Robert, I don't see why not I have used a carp rod to catch them before. You can use a weight or a spinner i just use the feathers as an extra way to attract the mackerel. The only problem with using multiple feathers on a rod is that some times you can get a few fish at a time and its a struggle to get them in and there's always a risk of snapping your rod when trying to get them up the wall. I would start off just using the spinner first then if they are not taking the spinner i would half the feather rig and try them with a spinner on and if that didn't work i would put the weight on so i could get a good distance out.

I'm not sure about the marks around tynemouth area Steve. The piers are quite good for spinning from tynemouth, shields and roker piers. If you are on Facebook join the fisherman's locker there should be people on there that are local to you and should be able to help you out.

Small metal lures would be good to use, silver minnows, dexters wedges and tobys etc I normally use 28g razorclaw silver minnows they work well for a variety of fish.

Hi Alan, its a struggle to lift them up the pier wall with my spinning rod. Yes there is a chance the rod will snap but I dont mind taking the risk.

Hi Richard, I got them from my local tackle shop reelsport. Have you tried veals.co.uk they might have some..... I stopped using them because they didn't last to long ive switched back to using the razorclaw silver minnows they work better and last longer.

I decided to use the razerclaw silver minnow and silver stingers this summer i did try to track these storm and sea tech and the only place i could find was flash fishing near blyth out of stock .and some shop on the isle of man haha so there you go never mind what do you think of the fishing time restrictions on the walkway 0600 till 10pm

I think its absolutely disgusting that they managed to sneek that through the way they did. I didn't hear about it until they had already made the decision. They obviously made the decision without any input from an anglers perspective. I do agree that the people who live there have a right to live in peace and not have people drinking and vandalising the place but they need to realise they own a house near the river not the actual river. Its just as bad as them blocking off access to the public behind the old bt building. Seems like this might be the start of them blocking off access to fishing the river bit by bit and now they know they can make money off fining people I bet they step up the patrolling of the area because now it will be worth their while to do so when they should have been doing that before they restricted access. I just think its a shame because now people won't be able to enjoy night fishing in a relatively safe well lit area and will be forced to fish elsewhere.

Yeah i totally agree garry but the the thing is you'll never stop everybody from pissing shouting drinking just being a tit without a thought for others the same ppl who mess up ss pier in the summer they dont care because thier only fish for the mackerel . for ppl like me & you who fish for the cod September onwards anywhere enough complaining off me lol when are going for the mackerel coleys sandeels ect haha ?

Yeah true always the few that spoil it for the rest...... I had a quick hour on the pier yesterday morning, the coleys are there but was a bit to rough for the sand eels. There was plenty gulls diving not far off the end of the pier and the dolphins seemed to be feeding aswell. Soon as the weather clears up and the sea calms down ill be out with the spinners and sabikis.

They usually stick around until mid September depending on the sea conditions and weather.

Hi yes you can fish any UK beach, you don't need a licence for sea fishing you only need a licence if you plan on catching salmon and sea trout and for fresh water fishing. For the size limits have a look on the angling Trust website they list the sizes on there.

Try fishing at different depths and varying your retrieve between fast and slow. Try sink and draw retrieves along with side swipes of the rod. Going at the most productive times for the mackerel helps aswell I usually prefer to go for first and last light that coincides with an incoming tide. If your going through the day a settled sea with relatively clear water at high tide is usually good.
