That sure is a lot faster than my drop spindle. Thank you for making your files available, I'll definitely put it to good use!

Don't forget, sails are also made of cloth and they don't grow on trees. :)

Nice, spending the time watching lord of the rings. Extended edition I assume. I have firsthand experience making cloth with a four-shaft loom I made years ago, it's quite tedious as well. I've been leatherworking all day so far, on a belt pouch, I'm finally ready to start dying.

Been showing my lads that you can easily watch a film or youtube in the background while you're doing jobs. Great to have a video I can show them to say "see, I'm not nuts" haha

That is beautiful singles and ply. As an amateur spinner, I would recommend learning to long draw. It takes a bit to get the drafting shed and twist balance right, but once you do, the increase in productivity is amazing. Thanks so much for the wonderful video.

Thank you. I've thought about making a walking wheel and trying that out. I've done some with a book charkha with cotton. JB

@@GoodandBasic I really love long draw on my Scotch tension compact double treadle wheel. The only issue I run into is the tension is touchy. The relation between tension, material, and yarn thickness is a pretty narrow window in my experience. So I am switching hooks on the flyer fairly often to keep the diameter of the yarn winding onto the bobbin fairly consistent, and then as the bobbin fills up, I have to change the tension ever so slightly to keep the yarn thickness the same. When I was using short draw, I almost always found I had too much twist. With long draw, I use my support hand to pull against, and to slow down the twist just a bit to increase the twist in the yarn a little so when I reverse ply, it has a bit more twist to it. I also would recommend re-spooling the yarn onto an empty bobbin. I do this with a lazy Kate as far away as I can. This gives the yarn a chance to average the twist out over a 10 to 15 ft section, and I wind the new bobbin by hand, so I can lay down a very even layer, and keep the tension very even. This means that when I go to ply the bobbins together, the tension is really even, and the ply is tends to share the twist well. Thanks so much for your thoughtful videos, and also for your focus on both accessible and sustainable technology.

LOTR, crafting, family....it's a good way to spend time! I've been pulling out my charkha I printed from your designs during family TV time at night lately...will the loom be making its way to thingiverse before too long? I could see even just the heddle being handy for setting up a backstrap loom!

All things considered that isn't a bad time investment. Everything took time back then and the pace of life was much slower and one could argue that the clothing was much higher quality. So, what do you plan on doing with it?

Maybe I have been watching too many rockets launch lately but this made me think that this might be the best way for a new colony on mars to start making clothing. I know at first at least they will import every single sock pre-made from Earth but when someone gets a nice patch of cotton growing I am sure they are going to want to make a new pair of socks instead of waiting a year for a new shipment of pre-made socks.

Nope, nope, nopty, nope. Cotton uses too much water. Flax (linen) and hemp grow practically anywhere & with whatever water they get from Mother Nature. Sheep give wool (for clothing & other things), meat & milk (cheese).

@@robinmitchell4721 At first plants will be grown hydroponically with all water being recycled and sheep need too much land and like to live in large flocks. Good case for hemp though. And it grows fast.
