This was so helpful, Roxanne! The best part was that you showed different examples at the same time allowing for a comparison between the two looks. I am switching from "defined" to "subtle" as my default spiral technique.

I prefer to include the setup round in the plain row calculation. That way decreases in each column are spaced evenly, whether they are longer (above a setup decrease) or shorter (above a non-setup decrease). If you work the first decrease round immediately after the setup round you get a sharp decrease that can create a little point in your knitting.

This is incredibly useful! Thank you so much! I was actually just thinking to ask in the comments what the effect of using an ssk vs k2tog would be, and you answered it within the next minute :) I'm still somewhat new to knitting, having started a few years back now but still with a good deal to learn, so I'm still trying to get the hang of left-leaning vs. right-leaning decreases. I only just learned that the ssk gave the opposite lean to a k2tog about a month or two ago. So for the spiral crowns, I guess a good way to remember it would be to use a left-leaning decrease when you want a defined leftward spiral and a right-leaning decrease for a defined rightward spiral. Loving this series so far! I've got some yarn that I bought to make a matching hat for a sweater I made this year, and since it's only my second knit hat, I'm definitely looking for all the knowledge and tips I can find! Thank you! (Meanwhile, as someone who loves seeing all the knitting math, thank you for always presenting it! It's so helpful to have a generalised means of designing knits so that I can be more creative, which I love.)

Oh i was all set to be disappointed at a "no technique tuesday" what with the busy holidays and all… But what a pleasant surprise! And such good information. I make Ann Budd's berets for myself with my own colourwork type patterns and though she offers different crowns, i have only ever used one. But following your hat crown series, i have come to understand the 'whys' of hat crown construction. Have a lovely holiday in the snow that is heading your way. Thanks for this wonderful year of Roxanne University. Xxx X 🎄 14:43

The spiral crown is the first crown I learned how to make when I was a new knitter, and it's still the one I default to when I don't have anything specific in mind. It's easy to remember and pretty versatile. One of my favorite variants is to do four wedges, but do two decrease at the decrease points so you still get the same decrease rate as if you had eight. And that double decrease can be two the same direction, or two in opposite ones, or do a CDD all for their own variations.

I'm glad you added the comment about reversing the raised/subtle sprials when one uses SSK. For reasons I do not understand, I would always rather do an SSK than a knit-two-together. the former works smoothly for me; the latter, not so much. I'm a continental knitter, but that doesn't seem to be the difference. I love all of your videos! The history stuff is so fun! And the technical stuff usually adds new insights into my repertoire!

It is very interesting how where you make the decrease and what type of decrease you use affects the look of the hat. Your videos are so informative. I never really gave it much thought. Then again, I usually just follow the pattern I don't design the hats I have knitted.

Where do you get the head forms? I've been looking for children's sizes and have only found infant and adult? amazing thank you! Do I need to decrease during the knitting of the main part of the hat? after the ribbing and before the crown? or can I leave it to be around the same sts count as CO count. in my case it is 106 sts. I would devide it in the crown to 8 sections of 13 sts each, but I wish to maybe decrease before only if it is nessasery.
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson 5 ай бұрын
There is no need to decrease prior to working the crown, unless you need to get to a stitch count that divides evenly for the crown decreases. You'd do that as a setup round before the first crown decrease round.

@@RoxanneRichardson Thank you for the fast respond! I am decreasing a bit to do more easy to manage 20 sts pattern over 100 sts around and then I would do the crown. I have a small head so it won't take to long to figure out of it works :)

I don't know if you're going to include this but I've also done 8 decs per round divided into four sections. So 1 dec before the marker and 1 right after with different slants (but I'm sure you know this😉 Just wondering wheter you might have something new to add to how I make this, I mean it's always interesting to watch your demonstrations. And also is there something need to know about maintaining stitch patterns with this 4 sections style. Happy Holidays!

Roxanne, when you use an SSK at the beginning of a section, did you use slip as if to knit twice, or slip as if to knit and slip as if to purl? Wonder how the look of each compares?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
The bottom stitch (the one that you can't see) will be twisted if you slip the second one as if to purl. If you work some swatches, you can compare the results and determine whether or not you notice a difference and which one you prefer.

The Hat Techniques playlist, which shows on the end screen, and which is linked down in the video description, includes videos on how to measure a head for a knitted hat, as well as how to knit a hat without a pattern, so that you can understand how the whole process works, and knit yourself a hat using whatever yarn you have, and whatever gauge you're knitting at.

Are you using DK weight with size 6 needles?
@RoxanneRichardson
@RoxanneRichardson Жыл бұрын
The yarn is I think Ella Rae Classic or Heathers, so it's considered a worsted weight, similar to Cascade 220. I need a US 6 these days to get 5 sts/in on a size 6, when I knit continental. (I tend to knit tighter with my English knitting style, so I would use a size 7)
